I’m going to run through all the connections to the game, but more importantly, we’ll talk about what they changed from the game, and why those changes made the sorry work for TV. And I want to talk about those opening scenes from the first two episodes, and how they include some hidden details that everyone has missed.
So let’s talk about the two opening scenes. In the first episode, it seemed like this Dick Cavett-esque talk show was just there to inform us about how the virus could spread [clip]. But what we didn’t realize is that this is actually setting up a theme for the episode-that all through the prologue, the outbreak is only seen through reflections and panes of glass. We first hear about the outbreak on a TV show. Then the infected twitching reflected off of a bracelet.
Then the ambulances through the watchmaker window-which has the added detail of looking like the face of a clock, showing time is running out. The cookies rising in the oven symbolize the global warming that allowed cordyceps to mutate, the old woman’s reflection is first seen on TV, and of course, the outbreak itself is first seen on television. The prologue of episode 1 begins light hearted and ends very seriously-just like the events on outbreak data.
Which, by the way, also ended and began with a radio warning the, of danger [clips, play jakarta second].
And Jakarta is the prologue to this episode, set two days before outbreak day. Now in the games, the origin of the fungus is fro mold found on crops from South America. But in the show, it is spread through flour in INdonesia. In 2003 there were over 200 million people in Indonesia, and Jakarta is the largest city in the country.
But the most important thing to note is that baking flour is the real cause of a virus spreading.
Well doug-our manager douf=g everyone-the outbreak begins at a flour factory. Dr Rabata even says [clip]. Now a substrate is basically an environment where an organism-like a fungus- can thrive. Yeast is a single-celled organism that thrives in flour. When it feeds on the sugars in flour, this makes bread.
Yup. and in hindsight, there were clues about this in the first episode. Ol lady Adler was eating biscuits. Joel said [I’m in adkins] which is a diet where you stay away from breads and grains, so Joel remains unaffected. The channel heavy spoilers did a great video theorizing about that, which I suggest you check out. Even if he is an. I ithe talks about how Tommy dind’t get pancakes and Joel didn’t geta briothday cake, and sarah doens;t eat the cookies. So no flour for Joel’s family.
The channel new rockstars even pointed out that series co-creator Craig Mazin even said that there were “breadcrumbs' ' that hint about the virus’s origins. So now, those rising cookies in the oven take on a whole new, creepy meaning. So does the oven timer, which indicated that time was running out.
And all of this symbolism is represented in this episode-when Ellie eats a sandwich. She doesn’t have to fear bread, because she is immune to the fungus.
Now, take this symbolism and use it to look at this prologue. We open on people having lunch-much like the infected will soon be eating one another. And the very first words spoken in the episode are [sorry about your lunch]. Very, very sneaky. Because the lunch was spreading the virus to begin with.
The protagonist of this prologue, Dr Rabata, is a mycologist, and that is the study of Fungi. These prologues have to be very efficient and self-contained with their story. So, they show that Dr Rabata is an expert right away, because she notices that the slide is prepared in a different way [clip]. This was such a clever piece of writing, because it accelerated the audience learning that the cordyceps virus was in humans.
At first, she is dubious, like the scientist from episode 1 [clips]. But then she examines the body. And I gotta tell you, her incision on the leg is so simple, but seeing that fungus break out is terrifying. And it foreshadows the full on body horror we see later on-especially the cordyceps in the mouth, setting up Tess's last kiss.

The entire Jakarta segment was absolutely terrifying to me just the way she talked about bombing the city then wishing to go home showed the hopelessness
I said the same thing to my girlfriend that the first ten minutes was some of the most chilling television I have seen
but what i dont like is that the dialog is like direct translation from english, so it feels weird to my ear

Actress in the opening scene deserves an Emmy for that short performance. She completely captured the moment and sold me on it. God. Damn.

She was amazing. Honestly they both were, her and the military guy. His look of horror at what this gentle woman was saying, and her fear and wish to go home to her family. So moving.
I also noticed that when they got into the Museum and stepped into a room, the doorway behind them became unpassable and I truly felt that was a callback to the game, when you would close off an area and could no longer go back.
Yeah that literally happens in the game too
I literally squealed when i watched that I love stupid callbacks like that that remind you of the game beyond just story.

The scene when the infected were twisting and turning in unison as the sunlight hit them was visually cool and eerie at the same time.
First time I saw it I just happened to stare at the one body that wasn't moving at all **face palm**
Yea, it happened almost like a shimmer effect from the camera, or of the visual effects. The first time it happened I almost thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
I really like how they changed from FEDRA storming in the captiol building to a horde of infected because it suits a TV show so much better. Having Joel kill every single FEDRA member in the building by himself wouldn't be as realistic so this was a great change for the sake of the show.
They wouldn't have to write Joel into killing them all just because the soldiers are there. They could have had Tess hold them off and have Joel sneak out the back. But why would the soldiers be busting down the doors? Especially if like the game they already killed all those fools. Then they come back and bust in? I agree that some changes needed to be made and they did well.
In the game you can take everyone down but you can also just sneak out
Also, him killing a bunch of actual humans would've been a moral dilemma for the audience. That's why Marvel have those CGI fights, so things can get killed without too much thought.
That last kiss, to me, was the fungus "recognizing" the infection and basically was like, let speed up the process. Fuckin made my skin crawl
Cordyceps fungus actually produces chemicals in real life ants when they get infected, so it's not unlikely that other infected could detect those chemicals that are being produced through the sweat coming off of the newly infected person. Like pheromones.
It was disgusting to look at. The fungus coming out of the mouth is gross 🤮
I'm glad that the show is explaining how the infection started ,and I hope we learn more about it in the later episode.
I thought those segments were a little boring.. but after this one.. im actually really glad they are including them.. they really flesh out the game lore!!!
I like the explanation because from the beginning the viewer knows how they got infected, unlike, twd who made it a point to pointlessly stretch things out without a concrete explanation.
I love the Indonesian dialog 🤌🏽, sometimes local or foreign movie use some cringe conversation with Indonesian, but this one sound so natural and i can feels the story 🥺

Another detail that didn't see mentioned is that the infected doesn't seem to like the sun, just like the fungus itself, you can see that clearly when Ellie watches all the infected laying on the streets.
Wait, no one else writhes on the bed like that when the sun hits your face in the morning?!
That really stood out to me too~
Wonder if UV will be a thing later in the show... Don't know how popular UV was in 2003 but if it's just as effective as it is in Dying Light I can imagine it could play a big role

AKA when humanity is lost in the dark-loving Cordyceps fungus, they must look for a cure or a light-like the Fireflies
This Episode proves that Joel unlocked the assault rifle too early. Dude definitely put no pills or scrap into upgrades yet.

I took that kiss on Tess as a symbol of how the fungus has, in a way, violated her. Because it's already bad enough she got bitten, but the fungus being inside of her is just insult to injury.
I think that should not have been a kiss because the fungus could more easily reach the brain through her nose. I hated to see a "good" character violated like that by the producers because the fungus cannot "insult".
I loved the diegetic piano played by the frog in the hotel.
I think one thing that was glossed over in the first episode, was that the child that wanders into the QZ (and is promised refuge, then killed by FEDRA, and Joel moved to the burn pit) may have had the same immunity that Elie has but FEDRA didn't care or see the hope of a treatment and killed him anyway.
Wow I've literally never seen anyone bring this up and the more I think about it, the more I think they may be alluding to the younger generations having an immunity
I was wondering that as well! Surprised none of these breakdown videos never theorized that. I mean, he's dead, so we'll never know, but I was wondering how long he'd been walking all that way by himself to the QZ. It could've been days, which would've meant he was immune as well. Since the Fireflies are the only people (that we know of in the game and the show so far) that have doctors who are searching for a cure, they'd be the only ones who'd give Ellie a chance, whereas we saw in the QZ, as soon as that child in the 1st episode scanned red, they were killed right away.
He was infected on the leg, so the virus takes much longer to take over the body. He was a goner for sure. There’s no way the FEDRA guards would’ve thought anything else.

@@sharptojo6420 what he meant was that if there had been more immune people like Ellie, FEDRA’s policy would have them killed before anyone ever discovered their immunity. Shouldn’t they at least wait for them to show early symptoms?
I don’t know why and I rarely ever do but that scene where Tess gets “kissed” by the infected at the end gave me chills and creeps

One thing you didn't pointed out was the first appearance of the giraffe plush. This plush appears everywhere in the game and they incorporated that detail in this episode.

The openings are a nice touch to give context to what will be happening in each episode, without the characters needing to use exposition. This week's was chilling, because when the military officer is explaining the events to the scientist, we can see her heart sink when she knew it was hopeless. And when asking to be taken home, she was resigned to whatever fate came her way.
1:25 One of the cool things about them specifying that it's the flour mill in Jakarta is that it doesn't contradict the game in any way. Jakarta has the biggest flour mill in the world. It gets grain shipped in from literally the whole world, processes it, then ships it back out. So there's no reason that they couldn't have gotten a shipment of contaminated grain from South America, which was turned into the flour that then spread the outbreak worldwide.
It's another example of the attention to detail they're putting into the show, and *EXPANDING* on the lore, rather than making big, sweeping changes to it, which happens far too often in adaptations.
I have to admit, I'm really impressed by the show, so far. I've not played the game (not a Sony/Playstation fan, but I'm absolutely buying it when it comes out on PC in March, ESPECIALLY now), but I know a fair amount of it from watchalongs, and various conversations over the years, and from everything I'm seeing, especially from reactors who have played the game, they're doing a great job of keeping the spirit of the game in the episodes, along with the shot-for-shots, of course. And noone (other than a few people who were always going to bitch about literally ANY change) really seems to be upset about the changes/additions, so far at least. I'm really looking forward to more!!

@@Scott_G Agreed! And the timing is brilliant, because there are tons of normies who've never played the game, but are probably already getting hooked on the show. The game will be out in March (the 23rd IIRC) on Steam, right about the time that the show is over and people will be jonesing for more content. And since PC is WAY more prevalent/accessible than Playstation, it will boost the sales. And I'm sure they're going to absolutely blitz all their various marketing channels with that news.
Plus there are, I'm sure, plenty of people like me who are gamers, but who never cared for Playstation, but who are still interested in playing the game.
I'm not a fan of Neil Druckman, but even I have to admit, the man is either really smart about marketing, or he's got a great marketing team.

I like how they're portraying the apocalypse not as Humanity getting dealt a bad hand but as one previously Dominant species vying for control against a new Dominant species.
Bella Ramsey 100% sold me as Ellie in this episode. In Episode 1, I thought she did a good job but something felt a tiny bit off. It wasn't like when I saw Pedro on screen and heard him talk and I immediately went "That's Joel". But Bella managed to perfectly embody Ellie with her comedic timing, vulnerability, and just overall presence. I figured she would grow into the role and that's exactly what happened.

couldnt agree more!! That sandwich line had me in stiches!! :) when i saw the casting.. i was like WHAT???? why her??? now we know "WHY HER".. :) She even sounds a little like her... its not that usual BRIT doing a generic american accent.

I love your assessment of how things are color-coded as well. And also the way the last sequence in the room in Jakarta is shot, the color of the walls, and the square window behind them also mirror the shot of the gold stove in the window of the oven.
This episode was great! I didn’t mind the changes at all. My fav moment was actually the prologue. It’s really interesting seeing the start of the pandemic. Especially how dreadful things feel when the scientist suggest that they bomb the the city in Indonesia
I just noticed that you can see Tess's bite mark before they reach the Capital building. When they are walking towards the building she turns around to look at Joel and Ellie and you can see it.

I just love how everything is just so beautiful man! Also Tess’s death gets more meaning in the episode than in the game. Also the nice addition of the communicating fungi 😄 so excited about the series!!
She said, “so there aren’t super infected that explode fungus spores on you”
She was talking about bloaters. I guess it’s insinuating that not even Joel and Tess know they exist yet.
I think it was a game reference since in the games they use spores but the show is using tendrils like how tess got a literal kiss of death with tendrils

@@TeeTV22 It would’ve been produced in her mouth anyway so she had to buy time with lighting the place up and the kiss may have been better in her eyes as long as Ellie and Joel got to some semblance of safety. Better than most walking dead deaths though
@@TeeTV22 She was already losing her mind at that point due to her infection, hence her struggling to ignite the lighter. It’s also why the infected initially ignored her or were slow to recognize her presence. In other words: foreshadowing.
@@TeeTV22 - It's likely the fungi had already begun to take over her body and wouldn't let her run away-- she was already being moved about like a puppet. Maybe it took a hell of an effort for her to continue to try to get the lighter ignited.
11:59 that model is the Old State House in Boston (not Independence Hall in Philadelphia). Just outside the building is the site of the Boston Massacre. The building houses the Bostonian Museum in which the model is seen.
The Bostonian Society was formed to preserve and steward the Old State House, but the museum in the Old State House is not called The Bostonian Museum.
Anna Torv knocked it out of the park I was prepared for tess' death buy this hit me right the feel once more.
I think in the video game if Tess had been in the same situation as in this episode, she would have preferred to end herself rather than succumb to that.
I have ALWAYS loved Anna Torv’s acting. Just so well done. A beautifully dark story so far.
The slicing open of the skin to reveal the fungus within is reminiscent of the scene in “the Andromeda strain“ film in 1971. Space virus has wiped out of town, spread by respiratory means. When the investigating doctor in a hazmat suit cuts open the leg of a victim it’s revealed that the blood has gone crystallized. It’s a very similar image.
Love how fast these come out, but my eye twitched every time I heard “virus” 😜

SAME! By the midpoint I was literally yelling "Fungus" every time he said virus.
They nailed the Clickers and the Runners. Some changes on a few things compared to the game but overall pretty faithful. They say the actors for Joel and Ellie didnt play the game but you could have fooled me. They are spot on
It helps that the guy who voiced the clickers returned for the series :) and also, if you don’t know this by now, actors tend not to/don’t need to look up the source material as it will affect their portrayal and being “true to the moment” in acting. But none of that matters because Drecker directed this episode. So definitely in good hands.
Negative. They said they had not before they were cast. Pedro Pascal specifically said he talked to someone he knows well about the game when he heard about the role. Does not mention playing it or watching the cinematics after that, but based on the deliveries of both of them it sure seems they found out.
apparently they spent the most time on conceptualizing and making the clicker props. they even got some fans of the game to play them in the show.
Never played the game but I am so Into this show. Zombies aren’t even my thing but the way they ground this in science has me as much intrigued as I am terrified. I love the opening scenes so far and I hope they keep those flashback cold opens that contextualize the spread.

I love the way Ryan educates me about the backstory and other pertinent information. This is the best media for fans.
I've never played the game so I really appreciate these breakdowns. There's so much symbolism that I've missed.

Bella Ramsey may not look like Ellie, but she plays the role so well. In the first episode I was skeptical, but in this one she convinced me. I'm excited to see more of the "TV version" of ellie.
I like the ducks in Boston since they could be referencing the Make Way for Ducklings statue.
Playing this game in college made me take mycology. I already knew the mysterious and incredibly interesting hypotheses of Paul and Terence McKenna, but the idea that my love of human biology could merge with mycology or, that it has possibly done so far in our past, was totally new, to me.
Did y'all figure out a potential cure for this thing?

Both openings for the first two episodes to me have been the scariest part. One with a scientist saying if this happens we are done and the other one where the scientist very quickly comes to the conclusion of what will happens and then accepts her fate to go be bombed to death. Really great acting for both openings too.
I did not play the games because someone ruined it for me. I'm actually surprised at how much I am looking forward to this show. This episode was intense and added to the world. Can't wait for ep 3

I've played both games start to finish 5+ times each. They havent been spoiled a single time.
You really, REALLY need to play the games. They are both phenomenal. Although this show seems to be giving them a run for their money, so glad Druckmann was involved.

THIS GAME CANNOT BE RUINED!!!!! It doesnt matter if you know every single plot twist from start to finish... Im currently replaying the REMASTER (not remake) and this is the .. hmmm i would say 11th or 12th time ive played it all the way through... Im just past the BILL section atm... but trust me.. for as much as ive played it.. im STILL noticing NEW things i didnt see before.. PLAY IT!!!! Its the best game ever created for any platform.. its just a shame they couldnt keep it up... trust me.. this is lightening in a bottle!
The ending wirh ellie stopping and the camera still moving is great, shows that she started to bond with tess and joel, she wants to mourn her as the camera moves forward indicting that thru tragedy you still haveta move forward even if u dont want to

That was a dope scene. She said straight up bomb and shocked the officer. No other movie I have ever seen had the specialist tell the military to go balls out and kill everybody bluntly. It's usually the other way around and the scientists are like give me more time for a cure 🤣
Not sure if it was an easter egg, but when Joel opens up the hotel door at the beginning of the episode as they're leaving (around 18:50), the door creak sounds like a Clicker

I honestly love how the show is giving the gamers what we know happens in the game, but in a completely different way that keeps us on our toes. We know something is coming, but how it happens is what is so different and entertaining

I don't usually get into zombie stories, but this one has hooked me. And to echo other commenters, the Jakarta opening was jaw dropping, that actress is amazing. And I still adore Doug!

I am appreciating the changes and expansions they've made so far. As someone who has played the games, it gives me further reasons to watch beyond mere fandom. I do wonder if they'll change any of the major events in meaningful ways.
I'm loving the beginning of the episodes and hope they keep it going. The game never went deep into the world before the outbreak, so these are becoming the highlight of the episodes for me. When that scientist just plain out said bomb the city, I got chills.
I’ve been a fan of the game since before it’s release, to picking it up on the first day, to waiting several years for part 2 all the way till now, feeling so ecstatic about how well they pulled this off..
Anyway, the kiss from infected to Tess is a way to touch of fungi communication. This particular infected in a bit advanced ( from stalker to almost clicker) so he can still see and sense that Tess has been recently indoctrinated so it wants to do is help speed up the process. Very well done.
It was a really good change of the infected after them and not the soldiers. One thing when we getting Easter eggs of the last two episodes of willow. Thank u for being awesome

I already liked this episode but you made me appreciate it even more. Thank you for all the depth you go into with your videos. You definitely enhance every media you talk about.
i think they have done an incredible job with this show. the way the did Sarah's death scene, the way they designed the clickers because that was spot on, and Tess's death was super well done. it wasnt exactly the same but they kept it in the same building. it was gross though but it was still really well done.
Reminds me when Freddy the Flute was turned into a mushroom in HR Puffenstuff.
The scene of the deserted restaurant with the place settings sitting there WAS creepy, but as a waitress, I couldn't help but picture those poor souls that still had to set their tables at the end of their shifts while the world was coming to an end 😅😅😅
Think of it this way. It was just a normal day, you set up at night, and went home. The next morning the CDC said "stay home" businesses were shut, nobody went out, people were standing at their windows eying other suspiciously. You were not setting up during the end, the end came swiftly.

I think she was actually sad in that moment and looking at him realizing she would die and not see him again.
I read that as her being in a displaced state of mind, as she knew she'd been bitten and would be turning soon. With her and Joel having each other's backs for years, I think it's unlikely he wouldn't have helped her, in the same manner, other times in the past. Also, Joel took care of her busted eye and cleaned the cuts on her face the morning after she was beaten up by Robert's men. He even gently held her face while he examined the damage that had been done. He may not have felt for her as she felt for him, but she was his partner. Partners help each other.
Also it's electrical tape which you loot a ton of in the game and use in crafting.

As you pointed out, it is a symbol for metamorphizism. In ancient greek the word psyche did not only mean butterfly but also soul or spirit. So after death it wound transform into another form of life. This has been adopted by christianity as a symbol for resurrection. And ressurrection can only be achieved by redemption. Here it is Elly who redeems humanity and gives it a new life after the apokalypse. In christianity it is someone else whose name she often uses throughout this series.

The tendril scene spreading to Tess was perfect. We’ve were teased that Joel and Tess are in a relationship. I’m her last moments, she wanted to kiss Joel, but couldn’t and I believe that the tendrils needing to infect a new host is symbolism for the kiss Tess was longing for with Joel.
I think u might be a little off base here matey... the writers of the show are more than capable of showing a tender moment.. they have done several up till now.. a hand touch... a kiss on the top of the head.. a lingering look.. As a Mexican I Love that you like Tequila. I can’t get enough of this show either. Everything, dialogue, sound effects, acting, the fkn scenography, the background and textures they gave this world. I almost can’t believe how much I am enjoying it.

Tess wasn't attacked because they could sense the infection? Why the "kiss"?
That's what I'm trying to figure out. Prehaps it was a way to speed up the infection and complete her transformation? But if it's only a 10-15 minute transformation if you're bit on the head or neck, then surely she was pretty much there already.
@@kylewolfe_ i have a crackpot theory on why the Kiss and why Tess pretty much froze. That one zombie who saw her was her husband /lover and his mind and brain pushed through the fungus to kiss her again (since the brain and body are still alive but the brain being confused by the fungus) and that being why she froze and almost accepted it. But then remembered what was happening and blew everyone up.
I think that zombies can sense when someone is infected and ignore them. But why that one male zombie saw and approached her
The infected all seemed pilled together when we first saw them so maybe they are drawn to newly infected or each other when not infecting others. probably more thematic honestly. A kiss of death, body horror, a welcome to the zombie community. I think the fungus is probably drawn to new or not as fully infected members and it was thematically a 'kiss of death'
not totally a fan of it cause we have been led to believe the main aim of the virus is to spread, not to also communicate with other infected. So kinda feels like internal logic was skipped for a body horror scene. maybe more will be explained about it but overall still a good episode.
Probably something to connect the horde together? Since these hordes are connected through those fungal tendrils, it was a way to connect them together for a "hive mind"

1000 comments so far so maybe this has been already been brought up. flour may be the perfect substrate and jakarta has the world's largest flour mill, BUT if the ingestion of tainted flour was one of the principal forms of mass rapid transmission, it would have to be ingestion of the raw, uncooked flour. perhaps proximity to it in storage/packaging etc can spread it, but the
supposition that eating flour based products doesn't hold up. cordyceps may have evolved to survive >98.6 degree temps in humans, it's a stretch to think the fungus would survive a 450 degree oven that bakes bread and other flour-based food products.
The butterfly analogy just made me realize a possibility for TLOU 3: Ellie is gonna sacrifice herself to some doctor ultimately to try to save the human race and make up for what Joel did.
Except is useless (im sure they will re write it to make it happen tho) in the first game you find files that explain that ellie isnt unique and that in the past there had been people immune to the virus as well
