- This video shows an elite player how he or she can gain better control at impact through a more in-depth understanding of the hold on the club, its effect on ball position and how to align the body to both.
My last 2 videos are guided towards the beginner golfer and the intermediate player. Check them out as they are full of info that will come across in a less technical fashion. ENJOY!!

Been playing 13 years, had countless lessons and this is the first time that anyone has explained the impact position properly. Fantastic video Steve. Thanks again. BTW I had my lowest round ever at Cardrona a few years ago, I was off 16 then, shot 81 for a net 65, now off 11. The thing that made it special was the weather, 40mph winds and horizontal rain, none of my 3 playing pals got with 10 shots off me. Happy days! Hope to get back up there next summer, Covid permitting. Thanks again.
This is the best grip lesson ever! You should call it the "Eureka grip". So much detail, but this it what is needed to play good golf. Excellent job explaining and demonstrating this technique.
I like your tip about the relationship between the right hip and right elbow
Oooft, that’s an old video Iain. Thanks for watching👏🏻👏🏻👍
Back in the day I played my best golf with left hand only on club , set up stance and applied right hand on whilst looking to target, then bam! swung and hit it.
Decades later, my head is full of UA-cam golf crapolla and I did this grip setup.... took me back 30 yrs... what a strike. Cheers. Mike.
I've booked a place in university. I've recorded this video Steve. Three years from now armed with my PhD in physics, I'll watch it again ! ! Only kiddin' Steve, brilliant explanation.
EASILY the best grip lesson of all golf videos, the details are critical AND you REALLY learn the anatomical CAUSE/ EFFECT, it all leads to clarity!!!
Quite possibly one of the most helpful UA-cam tutorial videos of all time.
I tried this at the range and it worked perfect. Hit the ball farther and straighter than ever.
This video just gave me direction on something I've been struggling with for a long time. Thank you Steve. Cheers
You’re welcome John👍
Just watched all three in this Grip series. Having gone from elementary, at age 6, to "elite" [your word for a single digit hc] in mid 20-'s to 30's and now just want to shoot my age once a season before I turn 80 in 5 years, there was solid stuff in all 3 of these. Love the thumbnail tip in the elementary vid., using the palm grip for the lob in the intermediate, and the three joint explanation in this vid and theirrole as swing fulrcum and the relation to the sweet spot and ball position which is phenomenal. Keep up the tremendous work. Your channel is a gem.
As someone who is making a return to golf this year I'm loving these lessons! I thought my swimming Coaching and lessons were technical ...... love it.
WOW!! I always took my 4 iron and rotated my wrist to open the face at address. It never occurred to me to move it back in my stance!!! WOW!!!
pretty advanced stuff! very opportune because I've been wondering this myself. Sometimes I would grip the club in a way that for me seemed to be straight but always pushed the ball a little. Then with a slightly closed face it would go straight, and I didn't understand why. This is the explanation!! :D
This might be my favorite video on UA-cam.
The best indepth grip guide ever thank you.
Excellent info for those of us who need that extra bit of info to make sense of the swing. Slàinte.
This is a really great video. Don't want to get too far down into the weeds here but this is one of the key reasons for HK talking about taking the grip at impact fix of the club you are hitting. I would imagine there will be many that say that the swing and instruction does not need to be complex, my reply to that is we have tried to keep golf instruction as simple as possible for years and years and handicaps have not improved. Maybe people need better information to get better.
Well said Greg! Take a bow mate!
How am I supposed to remember all of this great info after a few frosty cold ones ;)
Never really understood why the ball position changes until now. Very insightful.
This may be the best golf tip in all of UA-cam. With this I was able for the first time, to flush my 3,4 and 5 iron at will. If I wanted to add shape, I just opened or closed the face a teeny bit more as I lined the sweet spot to snuff box. Thanks Steve. - by the way, you should have 200k subs based on the quality of your content alone. the other guys are more entertainment really..
Aric Adlam you’re the man!!
Good job Steve. I never saw the grip explained this way in the three part series presented. I learned something today. Thanks!
OK, so I played a round of golf today in hot Arizona (108) and I fiddled around with this with just my eyeballs. I failed to move the club back to square it with my target line so ooops!, but sure a shootin', the ball went straight with my 6-iron. My 48 degree wedge pushed well to the right as did my 9-iron and PW. I guess I buy this theoretical stuff but regular folks like me are not or cannot plum-bob all our clubs and mark them accordingly. Maybe you can give us a more in-depth video on how from a practical point of view we can implement this strategy. Love your stuff, guy. thanks.
Just watched this as I was looking at some of your earlier vids, what a great informative vid. I have had lessons from a few different pro's and none of them have gone into such detail.Cheers
This might be a year old now but wish I'd seen this years ago! Explains why my long irons fade and short are more straight/draw as I've always kept face strictly square...yeah this should be Eureka video too!
Brilliant video. I was tinkering on the range and made a conscious effort (it was bloody hard) to set up with the ball more toward the hosel - just inside the centre of the face. Bugger me.. The bloody ball flew out of the 6 iron like rarely it has before. It had really good height on launch, brilliant distance and without any other adjustment in my swing ie inside, exaggerated in to out swing path etc etc. I came home to look up ball position on iron face on tube and found your strike the sweet spot video and this one, elite grip. I was amazed when you said the sweet spot is a little bit inside the middle of the face because of the weight of hosel/shaft as thats exactly where I placed the ball 'forcing' myself to get it away from my normal strike position which has always been a little right of centre ie toward the toe. As I got older (63 now) I found I lost distance quite rapidly but today the ball sounded and felt so much better again striking it more in the sweet spot. Very enthused now, looking forward to getting the woods at this and see what develops. Many tks Steve, Russell!
I have just come over to this vid directly from your "sail" drill vid (as recommended) and I am so pleased that I did.
I have struggled with an open club face at impact for years, (even though I have a relatively strong grip) and could never understand why I hit a fade?!!!!! What has particularly puzzled me is that when I deliberately close the club face (whilst maintaining my normal strong grip), (when trying to hit a low hook around a tree for instance), the ball actually goes bullet straight and takes off like a "feckin Rocket"!!!!
Mr Johnston I think I may have had a "Eureka" moment!💥💡⛳💥
Jack Nicklaus was in line with all clubs like that. He made it look easy. You teach how it works. Thanks.
any evidence to support that statement ? not doubting you, just curious
Amazing insight Steve, mind you I'm getting worried about that wedge sweet spot, bit near the old socket :)
As a kid I was told to bounce a coin on my putter face and listen to the note/sound, and this would identify the sweet spot, then file a little line on the putter top edge.
steve I live in ausralia but born in glasgow but getting dack to your videos I don't know how many pro's I have tried to tell them about the eliement with the shoulders elbow and snuff bow they don't know even what the snuff bow is just last week j jusr joined a new club and even the pro didn't know what I was talking about I ask them this cause I had a car accident a while ago I have had tension in my arms talk about mucking around till I sawyour videos pal so thanks
This is excellent stuff, really enjoy your videos and the personality. Having a bit of fun understanding what you are saying sometimes as I am a canuck, but my mom and gran were Scottish born (McIntosh) and I remember the brogue. Cheers.
best grip lesson on the Internet
dazzystart cheers for comment!⛳️⛳️👍🏻
steve you have just done what I have tried to get help with even another pro said the same thing they didn't know want I was talking about I live in Australia all they care about is the money thanks for the videos pal I was born in bonnie scotland catch up
Just checked this out absolutely brilliant.learning so much from you ,thanks steve.
Very welcome Archie. Everyday is a school day!!!
My goto video for the golf grip. Love it!
Wow, this answers so many questions about setup!
I will have to try all this on the range and see how it works.
Great video, really interesting, makes you think about the setup and made me understand ball position a bit more. Thanks
WOW, again the ginger Scotsman tells it as it is.....Steve, you deliver some very good stuff
Great video Steve. Even for a 12 handicapper like me. Thanks ⛳️🏌️👍🏻
Those sweet spots near the heel of the club are characteristic of many (not all) blade irons. Cavity backs (even forged ones) tend to have the sweet spot closer to the middle of the face which is easier to hit. (Why do it the hard way? I use forged cavity backs. Even some touring pros use cavity back irons.)
For me, your very best lesson. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
amazing insight Steve. Flushing it now. . Thanks Steve for sharing
Excellent description implementing this ASAP
Great lesson. Thanks Steve
Great video Steve! Many thanks!!
Very understandable as to why to do this. Thankyou
Thank you. Great lesson. Helped me with Mt shot
Great info , After watching this I now use the impact position with my mp5s in my setup and contact sounds amazing . Thanks
Its amazing how that ensures the in-line position at impact and ensures correct ball position at address.
Love these technical videos it all makes perfect sense. I have heard of guys flattening the lie angle on wedges. Is that to move the sweetspot away from the hosel?
Love the elite videos great channel
Antecubital fossa is reffered to as the ACF in medicine, FYI.
Great vid! Used the ball position yesterday and it was perfect. I had a little trouble converting this idea to the driver. Can you do a vid on that? Thx!
Great explanation! I’ve been watching a few pros I like play on video lately trying to find my swing again after years away. This finally explains the little hitch you see them do right at the end of set up. Setting the sweet spot. My only question is are once your set, the read June to of the shoulder. Just drop or sway it back a little to re align?
Interesting and insightful. I wondering though about aligning the cg of the club. The shaft is dynamic and that location would not be in the same place at contact at full speed depending on shaft flex. Maybe I’m not getting something?..
All I wanna know.....how in the world can you have lush grass in the dead of winter? There's not a leaf on any tree that's not a conifer. Yet gaze upon the fields........ incredible
Hi Steve. I agree with others, this really is the best grip video around. You explain things really well. Just curious on how his works with driver/3 wood when considering the sweet spot and lack of off set? Cheers.
Sweet spot much closer to middle of face so when adopting the hold the face is much squarer resulting in the ball position being much further forward (face not as aggressively closed so les club rotation to get it square to target at address). It will become clearer when you have the club in your hand. Thanks for comments, might do a video on this. thanks again
Brilliant Steve! Great video , In valuable information! New sub here!
Thanks and welcome
This is what I imagine a golf lesson would be like with the SAS. No I'm not tough enough 🤕
Bloody hell Steve, you did say that was a video aimed at the Elite golfer you forgot to say you also needed to be a Biologist and Physassists as well.... But in all seriousness you somehow made it clear. I definitly understand ball possition a lot better now and always thought the sweetspot was in the middle of the face.. As for the Stenson comparison you are bang on, I never understood his preshot routine until now.
I've been playing this game for a long time and I thought I'd seen most of what UA-cam had to offer on left hand grip position, because while my own ball striking is pretty decent, I've never felt totally comfortable with the left hand on the golf club. This clip is interesting, I've haven't seen this kind of perspective/information before.. but it makes sense... a kind of biomechanical/anatomical perspective. I'd like to know where you got it from, or are there any references/sources on the web? Closing the club face like that, I don't see too many pros doing it - most appear to place the club face squarely behind the ball at address and then take there grip from that square position. But just playing around with this method of yours in the living room, I feels really good, and I feel like I can get into a really good back swing position quite effortlessly with this tip. And for some bizarre reason, closing the club face and then taking my grip also feels a lot more comfortable. Anyway, sorry for the lengthy comment, and well presented and explained, and if you can shed a bit more light or site a few references, that would be great. But in the meantime look forward to taking it to the range. Cheers.
big fan
Fantastic!!!!
i like this !! thank you
Steve , does the concepts re taking the address position in this video align with the gem golf product ? Eg if hands forward at address does that conflict with gem rationale ? Does gem not return the hands to the same (over the ball) position at address when it gets to impact ? Thank you keep up the good work
HI Steve
Is the sweet spot closer to heel for driver and 3 wood also? Thanks
How about the driver grip?
lover the videos Steve! I have a question on this, how can you see the sweet spot is in line with shoulder, elbow, wrist as per 04:48 when your eyes are several inches away from your shoulder ? surely you are looking diagonally down your arm and not straight down it ?
Or, you could've said, " Use the same grip, & the lower the loft of the club, position the ball further forward in your stance, "...
So to take it further then, the driver sweet spot must be a little closer to the center and the grip a bit less strong?
how does this work for Woods?
steve could you show how the driver would be thankful buddy
Steve, how would a stronger or weaker grip effect this grip set up? Thanks
Just wondering if this is still true with a bowed left wrist as per Hogan.
This would be in direct relation to the "D" plane?
How would you apply this to a driver?
For a righty , how does strengthening , moving both hands to the right , or clockwise , influence the alignment points illustrated here ? ( same question if movement counterclockwise for the fade ) . thank you . don
don m understanding path and face at impact to shape shots is more important. I don't recommend altering the position of the hands on the grip to alter ball flight unless you swing from the wrist and not the glenohumeral (fulcrum)
So what your saying is that all irons from 3 to pw have different sweet spots? You said a wedge is much closer to heal. So why when looking at a tour players worn wedge, is the darker worn spot in the middle and not nearer the heal?
good question. I like this guy but I'm not sure about this video
Blimey!
Not buying your "sweet spot". I hit a few hundred balls every day. I measure exactly where every shot hits the club face, and the crispest, sweetest, best shots are *always* dead center of the face. It's the mass of the club head delivering the blow. The arms, hands, and club shaft just get it there. The sweet spot is center of mass of the club head, which you are not finding with your plumb bob. You are finding center of mass of the entire club on a vertical axis.
Love this chaps enthusiasm. . But,,, this is too complicated .
