Hey! Few things I need to clear up! 1) When I say ‘go right into the next product’ it means there is no waiting time :) A few recent studies have shown that skincare actually takes about 30 minutes to fully absorb into the skin. Meaning if you wash anything off your skin within 30 mins, they need to be re-applied. So layer it up and let it sink in all together :) There are exceptions with things like acne medication and certain vitamin c serums, so read the packaging carefully and do as it says 😜 2) Oil is at the end because I forgot to mention it so i had to stick it on the end! But sunscreen should ALWAYS be the last step in your routine.
So BHA 1-3 times a week? What about moisturizer that contains BHA? Also my previous question: Which kind of oil can I use as a cleanser? I got argan and jojoba oil at home atm, do they work?
Thanks for the info James, very helpful :-) Quick question, if I put on Tretinoin and wash it after 30 minutes when it has completely absorbed, do I still get the same effect from the Tretinoin?
This has literally been so confusing for me because i never knew how or why people had so many steps to their skincare routine. I honestly thought you just wash your face and put some moisturizer and you're good. Wrong! The past year has really been a turning point in wanting to take care of my skin (the big 30) so I've been dabbling in different skincare products and was thoroughly confused on when and how to apply toners, serums, and had no idea there was a such thing as cleansing oils and balms. Seriously, who would have thought that to clean your face you would slather it with grease?! But let me just say, watching this video has clarified a lot for me. I just followed this process and my skin feels so amazing right now! Thank you for this video and I look forward to seeing more!

Ikr?? I’ve always had an interest in skincare, since my skin was not the kindest to me throughout my teens, but I only ever really honed in on acne treatment - not realizing that the cause was DEHYDRATION lol The acne was caused by lack of moisture, so all that zapping at the acne was only moderately helping the active breakouts and helping to create a breeding ground for more. Holy grails always lost efficacy, I constantly bounced between clear and radiant or absolutely cracked, flakey, painful and mildly cystic mess. My healing period transformed when I figured this out, and also that ‘double cleansing’ did not just mean literally washing your face twice lmao I probably had so much makeup residue chillen under moisturizing without realizing.
Finally, I am new to this skincare routine so this video really cleared hell of doubts. my routine is Cleansing, toner, and a moisturizer plus sunscreen sometimes. I use a scrub twice a week.

Thank you so much! Now that I raised all 5 of my children and they are all out of the house, it is time to start taking care of myself. I knew what I wanted to do but I definitely did not know where to start. I am truly grateful you took the time to help someone like me who knows absolutely nothing.
I've been waiting so long for someone to provide a "how-to "sequence skincare products. I've guessed for a long time since I never really got an answer till now. This is the best, thank you, thank you, thank you. I've copied the list, printed it and laminated the print out and placed in it in my bathroom.
Debbie George Yess!! I have long hair that covers them most of the time but for people who wear their hair behind their ears or have shorter hair that leaves the ears exposed, super important!
Yes! and another thing I have been telling everyone younger than me is make sure you are moisturizing your ear lobes because I have noticed that (now in my 50's) mine are getting old and wrinkly and I wish I had included them in my skin care routine when I was younger. And for ladies (don't know if it applies to men) make sure you carry your skin care down onto your decolletage because that skin is thin and looks "old" faster than your face does.
I am beginner who started her skin care routine..ur videos are helped me a lot to understand which is a basic skin care routine u put so much effort for making this video for us tnq so much 😍🙂
one of the most helpful skincare videos i've ever seen! thank you and i will recommend this video to my friends so we can all correct some mistakes and even up our skincare game :)
Just started watching your videos and really love how in-depth you are, especially for someone just starting to find their skin care regiment your information is extremely helpful! Thank you!
Omg I have been searching for this type of video for so long but haven't seen skin care experts make it.. All of them tell you which products are great and which aren't but people who are just starting to invest in skin care don't know the order in which they should use the products recommended.. Thank you so much for this video.. Much appreciated ❤️
Facebook suggested you in my algorithm. So happy you made this video... 31 yrs old an finally taking care of my skin... ty for lining up my products and how to use them. My baby face has been lifting as no get older an want to have an even complexion. Debating opening a tik tok an doing my routine to ask for help lol show my horrendous methods from circa 2005... finally discovered primer... but only eyeshadow primer... soo everything is shiny by my eyelids now ahahaha Haaalllp
Honestly thank goodness I found this video. This isn't common knowledge and as someone who is just now trying to really take care of their skin, I have been told I should be doing all these things but never the order! Felt crazy asking UA-cam what order I should be doing this stuff in but really glad I got my answer! Thank you so much!
Excellent video which I recommend to guys who don’t really know which products and how to use for skin care. I hope my 20-year old son would follow you. Thanks to you.
Salicylic acid has transformed my skin - the leave on variety. Nothing else, not even salon intervention, has worked so well. My personal fave is "Paula's Choice 2% BHA"
Finally, someone not saying take or leave a toner. Like you touched upon, some products need a certain ph to be fully effective! Where would tretinion go in the routine?
this is, by far the best video on skincare I've ever seen 💞 perfect explanation, super clear instructions, lots of knowledge and BEAUTIFUL glass skin, you're my discovery of the year
James, I didn't use toners in years, then started using them again recently, absolutely agree with you, they make a vase difference. One of my favs atm is Origins Mushroom toner, so cooling calming. Really enjoying using the Tatcha products, you would so love the face mask sheets
Wow, the sound has really changed in your videos this past year, I hadn't noticed that until now - I just watched your most recent video on how to layer skin care (with inkey list) and thought of this video so I came back to it and the difference is really striking. You speak in a more calming manner now, I guess because you've got a better mic. Both this video and the newest video on skin care layering have been really helpful, thank you so much, you're a lovely person for taking the time to make this content. All the best to you, love from Portugal
The first time someone with actual care for skincare and is a skincare professional who actually has the clear skin we think someone with such skin knowledge would have Ur skin is scaring me, it’s so unbelievable
I appreciate this video and information! I just started a skincare routine last year and never thought about how long to wait between products, frequency of use, layers, etc. You're awesome!
Just do simple basic skin care routine. Wash face as often as needed.. Moring just use any spf atleast 20 on the face.... Then your make up or tinted moisturizer.. Night time clean face with olive oil.. Wash and rinse and use any inexpensive moisturizer... Just do tgis everyday.... Its doesnt need to be super pricey
I am like an oil factory in monsoon season.. and i dont do makeup, just the kohl and lipstick. So i guess there is no need for oil based cleanser?? Also my routine for AM is like cleaning toning and sunscreen (gel based, which moisterises my skin as well) cant apply anything after that, no moisteriser, no serums. For PM i do the cleansing water based, then physical exfoliation, masking three times a week, toning, then serum which i also apply lil under my eyes. No night mask, no eye creams. I have accepted my racoon eyes as hereditary 😓. But my skin is fairly good even if i am touching 40! 🙄🤭 summer and winter skin care is totally different.which works good for me!! I will try to add niacinamide in my routine, may be serum switch over is the need of the hr for me!! You are a real blessing James, all the honest info and what works for whom. P.S. Found your channel yesterday only and i have watched so many vids of urs till now. You rock !! 🤘
Thank you so much for explaining this. I grew up not learning about skin care hair care makeup care etc so I was very lost with other videos because they didn't explain what an oil based cleanser was and what it does and how to use it
I love to layer my skincare in the day and scale back at night with either an oil or sleep mask. I love oils in the day: Kiehl’s daily oil, Laura mercier’s rose oil, or La mer’s oil. I love to look dewy AF!!! 🤷🏿♂️
Thanks again James for the educational information 👍🏼 looking forward to version 2.0 of this video which includes all these steps along with treatments / actives (along with when to use and how to add different kind of actives in your routine) .
I just started to watch your channel and i think i will learn a lot to you,i am really obsses in skincare routine, ive waste a lot of money knowing that im doing it inappropriately.
Thank you so much for this video, I have literally been just washing my face and doing nothing else for so long and I got my first facial yesterday and learned I'm slacking! I have no idea what I'm doing. This vid is so helpful.
I still don't understand the difference between an essence and a serum 😌 Also, if I'm using a moisturizer (for hydrating) and a facial oil (for treatment- pigmentation, blemishes) what order do they go? Moisturizer then oil OR oil then moisturizer?
Serums have a higher concentration of active ingredients whereas essences are lighter so if u have sensitive skin u might wanna use an essance instead of a serum as it can be too strong. If u r new to skincare it's best to start off with an essance to prepare ur skin for serums later on.
I’m so glad I found your videos. I used to use bar soap to wash my face for years, which now makes me so ashamed to admit, lol. But I have started using Korean products and have come a long way with in my skincare journey!

Hey James, I love your videos! Following your advice has been a lifesaver with my acne prone skin! I was wondering if you could do more videos on full body skin care, I constantly have breakouts on my back, could you do more videos on these kind of issues? Thank you! x
I would suggest a body exfoliator or scrub. Get one of those glove scrubs and if you can't reach it, get the natural loofah as they are better than the plastic ones (also, for the environment). Try using a soap with tea tree oil as it helps with the breakouts. PS. You have a great DP
I've been waiting for something like this honestly bc I haven't seen a video that explains fully which should be followed by which. I do skin care and I've always have a doubt with my pattern and this helped me a LOT

I found the magic moisturizer recently! That is the Japanese Hada labo hydraulic acid milky moisturizer. It is really light just like some type of essence but surprisingly moisturizing to withstand the harsh winter where I live, some time it could be -28 out and extremely dry that my wet clothes would dry overnight. And I have combination/sensitive/ winter dehydrated skin type, I have been struggling for the past two years to find the right moisturizer for myself but this one just works so magically for me!! If u can do a review on that it would be great!! And I also use the whitening version of that moisturizer over night.
Are you referring to the white bottled hada labo? I really want to try their products but I get confused as I read somewhere before that their lotion meant toner or other way 😅
OMG you're skin is simply awesome. I am watching your video for the 1st time. I was confused what to apply and when to apply this is really helpful but little confused with the products, need to see it few times again. Thanks
When my skin gets confused, I take it back to the basics. Morning: rinse with tepid water, then one layer of toner, then SPF. Evening: oil cleanse, water cleanse, then one layer toner and moisturizer. After a day, I can tell what I need to add in. I add one product or step at a time over the next few days. For example, I have dry skin that loves layers of hydrating toner. That is the first step I add back in. Listen to your skin. Feel it with your hands, think about how it feels without being touched, observe it up close in bright light. Finally, remember that it can take months to tell if a product is really helping and usually just a few uses to tell if the product is making your skin worse. Hope this helps!
Well if you have dry skin like me, I've been doing exactly what he said in thr video. Oil cleanser, cream cleanser, exfoliate, mask 2x a week, then toner, essence, serum, I also use the ordinary Hyluraonic Acid and Niacinimide which I apply both before my serum, then moisturizer. Hope this helps and if you would liek to know what brands I use feel free to ask!
Such a clever video to think of James. Have been trying to figure out these exact things! I seem to know a lot about skin care but get easily confused/conflicted with the basics of how it should be done.. Especially with liquid BHA's - I find I need to let it absorb 5-10 minutes before applying, so it conflicts with needing somewhat damp skin for serums that are enhanced by damp/moisture (e.g. hyaluronic acid)
Omg finally I've been looking and researching everywhere for what order you put on your skincare!I could not find any vid but I finally found one yes!!
James, great video! I thank you profusely! I’ve been asking for a how to layer for 6 months! One question; would you share any changes to this routine if Retin A is part of the of ones evening skincare regimen?
Barb Froede all prescription products go on first after toners, then follow with the other products in a thinnest to thickest precession. I always remember that thinner products have smaller molecules that cannot go through bigger molecules from thicker products.
On my days off from make up I use oils. I use a combination of different oils combined in the one bottle (from health shop I pick my own oils that I want ej johoba rosehip etc ). After application within 5 mins or so it has absorbed into my skin and leaves the most smoothest glowing skin that lasts all day without it looking greasy.

A year later, still sooooo incredibly helpful. No one ever explains the why, the difference between their morning and night routines.
Everyone: you don’t really need a toner 🙃
James: *toner* *matters*
THANK YOU 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
an exfoliating one is, but wet skin will do the same to help ingredients absorb better. just my opinion.
I mean you dont lmao but you do you
Hey beautiful 🥰I've just created a new channel and uploaded a video on how to layer skincare like a pro? .. If u don't mind plz check it out 😊ua-cam.com/video/Gwk_F1mAH6Q/v-deo.html
and don't take me wrong, I'm not self promoting.. It's jst cuz my channel is new so it's difficult for people to reach a new channel 😇 God bless u.. Thank u
I saw a skin video with dermatologists saying that toners are useless and unessasary.
If the cleanser is not pH balanced (4.5-5.5) you need a toner.
Thank you SO much. I have been looking everywhere for someone to go through every single step but no one has expect you.
Don't forget your ears when applying sunscreen/sunblock.
Debbie George Yess!! I have long hair that covers them most of the time but for people who wear their hair behind their ears or have shorter hair that leaves the ears exposed, super important!
@@HelloKittysFriend418 #Longhairsquad #Milkfam
So far i have found banana milk and choco milk 😂
Yes! and another thing I have been telling everyone younger than me is make sure you are moisturizing your ear lobes because I have noticed that (now in my 50's) mine are getting old and wrinkly and I wish I had included them in my skin care routine when I was younger. And for ladies (don't know if it applies to men) make sure you carry your skin care down onto your decolletage because that skin is thin and looks "old" faster than your face does.
@@susanpohlers2638 So true.
God bless
I am beginner who started her skin care routine..ur videos are helped me a lot to understand which is a basic skin care routine u put so much effort for making this video for us tnq so much 😍🙂
one of the most helpful skincare videos i've ever seen! thank you and i will recommend this video to my friends so we can all correct some mistakes and even up our skincare game :)
but you're korean, you should already crush this stuff
that was the most perfect, complete and instructive skincare video that i've seen
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
This really helped cause some times I don’t know what order to put some of my skincare in and how many times to use a face mask a week :)
Finallyyyyy someone who actually tells me exactly what I wanted to know!!!!
Just started watching your videos and really love how in-depth you are, especially for someone just starting to find their skin care regiment your information is extremely helpful! Thank you!
hey! thanks so much!!
Omg I have been searching for this type of video for so long but haven't seen skin care experts make it.. All of them tell you which products are great and which aren't but people who are just starting to invest in skin care don't know the order in which they should use the products recommended.. Thank you so much for this video.. Much appreciated ❤️
Wow, there was so much effort put into this video. Your advice is really much appreciated, thanks James!
Aw thank you so much! Hope you liked it ☺️🙏🏼
Only place on youtube where it’s specified how much time to wait between toner and next step, thanks for the tips
Loved this video. Recently started taking serious care of my skin and this helps a lot.
Finally .. A good person to educate correctly . Allah bless you Jemes !
the best and the clearest way (and clearest skin) of explaining a skincare steps! thanks james :)
Facebook suggested you in my algorithm. So happy you made this video... 31 yrs old an finally taking care of my skin... ty for lining up my products and how to use them.
My baby face has been lifting as no get older an want to have an even complexion.
Debating opening a tik tok an doing my routine to ask for help lol show my horrendous methods from circa 2005... finally discovered primer... but only eyeshadow primer... soo everything is shiny by my eyelids now ahahaha

Thank you ☺️ I have started this regimen and my skin is gradually improving and clearing. You got yourself a new subscriber ☺️
Aw thanks so much! Glad it’s working for you ☺️🙏🏼
Honestly thank goodness I found this video.
Thanks to you.
thanks so much!!
Salicylic acid has transformed my skin - the leave on variety. Nothing else, not even salon intervention, has worked so well. My personal fave is "Paula's Choice 2% BHA"
Have been trying to figure this whole routine thing out for the longest! So happy I found your page through your brother's. Love you guys❤
Finally, someone not saying take or leave a toner. Like you touched upon, some products need a certain ph to be fully effective!
Where would tretinion go in the routine?
I’ve never really had a skincare routine, but my skin has been breaking out recently so this is super helpful!!
this is, by far the best video on skincare I've ever seen 💞 perfect explanation, super clear instructions, lots of knowledge and BEAUTIFUL glass skin, you're my discovery of the year
ah wow thanks so much!!!
Do a back acne video , step by step and products to use . Great video mayn 💪
Best skincare video ever? Yes! Can you talk about emulsions and where they fit?
This really helped. I was so confused about the order but now I know what to do :)
James, I didn't use toners in years, then started using them again recently, absolutely agree with you, they make a vase difference. One of my favs atm is Origins Mushroom toner, so cooling calming. Really enjoying using the Tatcha products, you would so love the face mask sheets
Literally took notes. Can't wait to research and gather all my products!!
Found your channel yesterday. My only regret is not finding it sooner! 💕
Only found you the other day. You are a joy to watch, so easy to listen to. Loving your skin care recommendations. You covered everything here
Hey! Aw thanks so much!!! ☺️🙏🏼🙏🏼
The intro is so smooth. Thank you so much for this informative video 😭
The first time someone with actual care for skincare and is a skincare professional who actually has the clear skin we think someone with such skin knowledge would have
Ur skin is scaring me, it’s so unbelievable
Awesome! Thank you! I learned so much about the exfoliants, I had no idea there were 2 types (chemical, physical)!
this helped me loads. i’m improving my skincare and helping my skin and just got an exfoliater along with an spf and a new serum
Aaahhhh! I really love you're videos. It helps me a lot and definitely educates me on skincare! Sending you lots of love!! ❤❤❤

I just took 2 pages worth of notes in my bujo. Wow do I feel enlightened
confidence in a creamer from IT cosmetics. i’m 14 with extremely bad skin and it works wonders
I appreciate this video and information! I just started a skincare routine last year and never thought about how long to wait between products, frequency of use, layers, etc. You're awesome!
Damn, I can’t even afford nice skin 😂
😂😂😂😂
If u cant buy the products you can drink alot of water and eat lots of fruits but I think u know that already 💀
Same lmao I looked at all these products up on Amazon and I'm broke already 💀
hmmm
You rock !! 🤘
After one clip, I subscribe right away...clear precise simple explanations for beginners like me..thank you
Thank you so much for explaining this.
This wasnt a "how to layer skincare" video.this was a full skincare masterclass ❤
I was asking this question for a long time .. thank you for finnaly giving me an answer ♡
dude, best video on skin care I've ever seen. You're amazing!
Is there a video where James explains how to take care of your skin after shaving? And how to properly shave? THANKS
Thanks again James for the educational information 👍🏼
looking forward to version 2.0 of this video which includes all these steps along with treatments / actives (along with when to use and how to add different kind of actives in your routine) .
Your skin looks even better today
ohhh thank you!
I recently had a bunch of skincare samples come in and I was overwhelmed with what order to do each, thank you for this video😊
This video was so informative and well organized. Thank you very much, you were very clear giving us the best information. God bless you 😊
I just started to watch your channel and i think i will learn a lot to you,i am really obsses in skincare routine, ive waste a lot of money knowing that im doing it inappropriately.
Omg I thought those white bumps under my eyes just causally lived there, you know, keeping my black eye bags company 😱
Thank you so much for this video, I have literally been just washing my face and doing nothing else for so long and I got my first facial yesterday and learned I'm slacking! I have no idea what I'm doing. This vid is so helpful.
THE BODY SHOP VITAMIN E EYE CREAM IS A LIFESAVER
rebecca is it effective for eye bags and dark circles?
Suchal Gondal yeah i swear by it u can see results like instantly
rebecca oh lord, I’ve to get it immediately then
lmaoo i work there and i absolutely dislike the whole vitamin e line! but i’m glad it works well for you! it just irritates my skin
Yess!!
When James Welsh speaks,we listen!!
Great skincare advice!!
Very helpful. I would like to know when to add The Ordinary actives like Ascorbyl glucoside, niacinamide etc?
Asad Khan the serum step I would say :)
@Give Good Face Thank you!!
I love you and your brother!! Y’all have taught me so much! Please don’t stop making videos! 🎄⛄️
I still don't understand the difference between an essence and a serum 😌
Also, if I'm using a moisturizer (for hydrating) and a facial oil (for treatment- pigmentation, blemishes) what order do they go? Moisturizer then oil OR oil then moisturizer?
I personally understand that oils are likely more suitable to use at night time, and moisturizer is suitable in both day and night
Moisturizer then oil, mixed makeup actually explained this one
Essence and serum are basically the same thing but not, essence are (usually) thinner than serum. Serums have more concentrated formula then essence

Glad you liked it!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️
I've been watching you for a quite while now, just realized that I'm not subscribed yet. Well, i really enjoyed the vids. New subscriber here 😇
wow thank youuuu!! this is literally the BEST skin care explanation ever! You tackled each and every products specifically. Thank youuu!
BEST VIDEO EVER!! THANK U!! U MUST DO A “HOW TO EFFECTIVELY & QUICKLY GET TO THE DAMN POINT ALREADY!” VIDEO TO SHOW THESE YOU-TUBERS HOW NOT TO SPEND 35 MIN BUMPIN THEIR GUMS ABOUT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING & ONLY 35 SECONDS EXPLAINING THE ACTUAL POINT OF THE VIDEO🤫U ABSOLUTELY MUST!☺️
Wow!! Dear klairs toner is one of my favorites I don’t see a lot of ppl even talking about it
I found the magic moisturizer recently! And I also use the whitening version of that moisturizer over night.
hyaluronic*
and yes i love hadalabo! its so light yet super moisturizing. (and so cheap)
Agreed! I used hadalabo cleanser and moisturizer too. It's a really good products and yet it's cheap. ❤️👍👍👍
Their Premium Toner is bomb too for dry skins apparently
Are you referring to the white bottled hada labo? I really want to try their products but I get confused as I read somewhere before that their lotion meant toner or other way 😅
OMG you're skin is simply awesome. I am watching your video for the 1st time. I was confused what to apply and when to apply this is really helpful but little confused with the products, need to see it few times again. Thanks
I feel like the more steps I use the more confused my skin gets. I feel like I can’t tell what I need anymore.
@@hollywebster6844 thank you so much, this seems easier to follow!
Could you comment on the inclusion of retinol cream and hydroquinone application and differin (adapalene) in The routine?
This is the sole reason I clicked on this video🤣
That’s exactly why I’m in comments looking for when retinol goes on....
@@vestaflamework9275 did u get an answer? Idk either
@@mayaisabelle3709 I think it goes on at night second to last. Eg just before oil. I’m not currently using an oil so I put it on last.
Retinol goes on before your moisturiser 😊
Omg finally I've been looking and researching everywhere for what order you put on your skincare!I could not find any vid but I finally found one yes!!
James, great video! I thank you profusely! I’ve been asking for a how to layer for 6 months!
One question; would you share any changes to this routine if Retin A is part of the of ones evening skincare regimen?
Barb Froede all prescription products go on first after toners, then follow with the other products in a thinnest to thickest precession. I always remember that thinner products have smaller molecules that cannot go through bigger molecules from thicker products.
I use Tiege Level 3. Its so simple and high quality. Some of these options are incredibly overwhelming.
What about acne creams / medicines? when would you apply, after serum or before?
after toner before serum
I thought it’s after serum and before moisturizer? Can someone please confirm this. Thanks!
@@juusheerio9551 i use it after toner and serum bc my acne cream is thicker than serum
Nice, easy and very informative video thanks for that James have a good one
glad you enjoyed it!!
Absolutely loved your delivery! Great job, very helpful!
