just read that chapter. The dread induced by a beast who one shot two assistant captains in a row and was about to kill 2 more is huge. Then it perfectly sets up Yama who basically one shot that beast and then 3 arrancar with so much ease.
This was a pretty awesome fight for a few reasons: 1. Ayon proved to be a serious threat by taking out 4 lieutenants instantly, which was no small feat, given that each lieutenant, with exception of Kusajishi, earns their place by being significantly stronger than almost every soul reaper in their squad other than their captain. Hisagi demonstrated this by taking effortlessly taking out Calius after revealing his shikai. Hinamori and Matsumoto also showed their prowess by handling Harribel’s 3 Fraccións to the point that they needed Ayon as a trump card, which is functionally the equivalent of 2 lieutenants vs 3 lieutenants. 2. Ayon instantly mopping the floor with the 4 lieutenants was a turning point because it essentially showed that the Battle of Fake Karakura Town had become a captain’s fight due to how the only enemies left were too strong for the lieutenants to handle due to them either having a serious trump card (Apacci, Mila Rose, and Sung-Sun with Ayon) or being captain level opponents (Aizen, Ichimaru, Tosen, Stark, Louisenbairn, and Harribel). At this point, the only actual help that could make a difference against Aizen’s arrancars by themselves were the remaining captains (Yamamoto, Kyōraku, Ukitake, Soi Fon, and Hitsugaya). Of course, this also added a level of hopelessness because most of them were preoccupied with Aizen’s Espada and therefore couldn’t save Hinamori, Hisagi, Iba, and Matsumoto which brings us to.. 3. Yamamoto had, up until this point, not really showcased his power to the reader/viewer. While he certainly did fight Kyōraku and Ukitake, 2 captains who Ichigo would have had zero chance against in the Soul Society arc, we never actually see the fight and Yamamoto definitely wasn’t taking the fight that seriously given how he was the only captain Aizen needed a contingency plan to beat. With Kyōraku and Ukitake, Yamamoto actually considered them to be like his children and didn’t want to kill them but with Ayon and Harribel’s fraccións, Yamamoto had ZERO logical reason to hold back much and thus, effortlessly finished a fight that 4 lieutenants couldn’t handle at all. This showed that as strong as the lieutenants were on their own, they were but small children compared to Yamamoto. It’s such a great moment.
Ya know, applying TYBW and Hell Chapter to this shows something interesting. Ayon is most likely Low-Mid tier Captain strength, considering how it took out a Lieutenant, who at this point is only a few years from becoming a Captain, with ease.
how is he able to calm down when chojiro was killed in front of him, yhwach came back, and the overkill sternritter basically made an insult towards chojiro’s bankai
