    Being a former bartender in local bars where I was on my own, that means I was the bouncer as well: if you have to go to a bar, go early, leave early. If you take a date to a small bar with lots of testosterone, you will be a target because you made your date a target. Again, 90% of fights happen between 10pm and 2am, leave early if you have to go. As soon as you see predatory action ( behavior) from a group, leave. If your date....and I have seen this more times than I've wanted to...insists you take them to these places...they are putting you in harms way because they enjoy putting you in harms way.

      Yep, I don't think I've stayed in a bar after 10pm (unless there's a live band) since a New Years celebration in Palm Springs years ago. Some young kid kept spitting at me trying to start a fight, but his friend hauled him away. Ruined my night, the chick I had been talking to bounced, and there's really nothing interesting or fun happening after that time either.

      I read it fast, I thought you meant 10am to 2pm, brunch times lol... I agree though, especially bars that are known to have bar fights or bars you aren't too familiar with, outside of tourists zone depending on countries (in my country of origin, it's the opposite, tourists create more bar fights than locals). Where I live, bar fights are rare in tourist areas even after 10PM but in some other areas of my city, bar fights and shootings can be common after 10PM. I wouldn't stay in an unfamiliar bar I don't feel safe after 10PM. For bars after 10PM, I only go to tourist areas even if I'm not a tourist lol.

      NOT fighting is always best. I've had to walk away several times while being called pussy and everything else. But I have a lot to lose legally speaking. Its the ones that wont accept simply 'winning' that you have to worry about. This is where systems like Taichi and kungfu are still important in a world of boxing and MMA. These martial arts that everybody makes fun of have techniques that don't look like fighting, and can get you out of situations where bystanders think you didn't do anything. When you understand leverage and body movement you don't have to throw an overt punch to make a person fall down and allow you to escape.

I am going to say unequivocally, that if you think there is any trouble brewing whatever, immediately let a bartender or bouncer know. They can often intervene and squash the problem before it becomes violent. If I see you moving forward, you are the aggressor, no matter where you arms are. I did a lot of Martial Arts in my youth, deployed to Iraq as an Army infantryman, and then did years of door to door sales for home security. I understand what you mean by saying that a bladed stance is more aggressive because it is a real fighting stance, but I believe that is only the case for experienced fighters.
    The natural aggressive posture is to square up to your opponent. Think of school yard fights getting started and how the young boys square up to challenge, push, and provoke each other. For most people who are not trained fighters squaring up is a very aggressive stance, particularly because it creates a “wall” in front of them. Whereas a trained fighter will recognize that a typical squared off stance is poorly balanced and has a slower reaction time for anything other than a frontal push.
    In door to door sales we were very conscious of this psychological effect and we would always stand bladed and as relaxed and almost ‘slouched’ as possible to come across as non threatening. The bladed posture allows more daylight to be seen by the other person and has less of a ‘wall in front of them’ effect. A modified version of this that I learned early on in sales is where to sit in relation to the customer. If at all possible you want to sit next to a customer either at the table or on the couch. If you sit across from the customer then psychologically you have now taken the adversarial position and they will feel like they are going to lose if the agree with you. Whereas if you are seated next to them then you take the position of someone who is on their side and assisting them in coming to their own decision. Obviously this effects people to different degrees depending on how mindful they are of their own needs and internal state.
    Tl;dr: trained fighters and untrained people will see the bladed posture and squared off posture differently and the untrained fighter is more likely to view a squared off posture as threatening because it becomes a wall in front of them. A trained fighter is reading cues whereas an untrained fighter is being lead by their emotions in a stressful situation.

      My father, a wise man, asked me how a 10 lb dog can back up a 200 lb man, pure aggression. It's saved me a few times...wile out and double their aggression, knashing teeth, smash stuff, yell above the noise of the bar, etc. Example, a guy pulled up and jumped out of his car and came at me extremely aggressive, he was thick. I instantly knew he meant me great harm. I just rushed him, screaming in his face, spitting and biting. He tried getting back in his ride but I kept at it, pure primal aggression. He had tinted windows. As I was still going nuts on him as he tried to put the car in drive I saw two of his buddies in the back seat, they were frozen, heads down and pale. I really think it saved me. If he saw weakness and got the jump on me, his friends probably would've gotten out and help pummel me.

    Listen, I see so many of these videos and it's just a lot of the same thing. Disagreeing with the next guy an offering rudimentary skills for protection. There is no predictability in real life situations. So it's almost impossible to train for that. Because you can't duplicate it. Those guys standing in front of you are doing what you want them to do. That's not unpredictability or real life situations. If you are willing to hold your ground during confrontation then you need to learn how to properly box and learn some jujitsu. You don't learn this from watching videos. You learn this by finding a good school. Do your research. Make sure that school has trainers and teachers that have credentials. But repetition and consistency is key. It takes months and years to learn to properly defend yourself. As someone that has been a lifelong practitioner I can find value in these videos but only because I understand what's going on. The best thing to do is look for an escape route. Always have a way out. The less you're paying attention to them and the more you're paying attention to your surroundings the less threatened they're going to feel anyway. There's fight or flight. You can't fight if you don't train and You can't fly if there's no exit. Always put yourself between your escape and danger.

    • @rhmayer1
      @rhmayer1 3 роки тому +1

      I agree 100%. No one is going to watch these videos and be successful without lots of training. In a tense, high-adrenaline situation you need to rely on muscle memory from lots of practice, knowing how to maintain your structure and footwork to avoid vulnerabilities, always watching your surroundings for an exit path and for potential weapons that you or your opponent could use, etc. Virtually all of these fighting videos are garbage, even the good ones, because they imply that just watching the video and envisioning yourself doing what's in the video is sufficient. That's woefully insufficient. You need to get on the mat and practice. A lot. These videos are ONLY useful for people who are on the mat practicing, not for "arm-chair travelers."

      I think that the fact that someone has to have training is implied in those videos. As a Martial Artidt myself I can definitely see the value of what is shown, take some ideas and adapt them to drills or practice...
      Of all the UA-camrs videos that offer such content I always had the impression it was made for students of that art to have extra info or givr them a different view/extrapolation of what they have seen in class.
      Probably because I agree with you 100% and any teacher or practitioner of martial arts has to. No one learns to defend themselves physically with videos, no training and most importantly, no sparring or live testing of said skills....
      So I assumed (maybe wrongly) that the people making such videos would be on the same understanding.
      Then again there is always those charlatans trying to sell you confidence in a bottle and tell you their system is the best and nothing compares to it and buy my videos and whatsoever..... I think anyone with experience can also see the difference between both type of people and only stick with those that are truly there to share and help along anyones journey. It seems to me like Joe Schilling behaved and reacted in an irresponsible manner. (In the video I saw I could not see the other guys right arm. Small chance he began to raise his arm to launch a punch but I doubt it), Joe Schilling is obviously a far superior fighter and physical specimen. The only scenario that warrants or justifies violent or aggressive punches to the face to knock someone out, obviously, is if you genuinely feel threatened or that you're in danger. Joe Schilling could not have possibly felt that way. No worries. Lots of his money is going to be in the other guy's bank account. If anything, the Schilling video is a great lesson on what not to do in that situation. If the guy is behaving rudely, give a warning, and let him know that it won't be tolerated. As long as the guy is not threatening anyone, violence isn't justified. The guy did flex though so who knows? Maybe videos from different angles will emerge. Maybe Joe picked up on the aggressive posture and reacted. But it just seemed like he was looking to tangle.

    Since this randomly popped up on my YT feed, I will make an unrelated comment :)
    First, Im not a fighter and I never had any interest in fighting. My defense starts with being situationally aware and avoiding potentially bad situations.
    When I was a teen, I learned that I had decent reflexes and awareness. I successfully ducked punches twice. The first time, the older guy approached me in a parking lot at night, simply wanting to hit someone. I could read his movements and tried to deflect by greeting him and smiling but he was unfazed by my friendly demeanor. I easily ducked his attempted punch to the head and quickly fled the scene :). I wasn't a bit ashamed and I sprinted about a quarter mile before looking back :)
    The second time, an older guy got out of his truck and approached me and a friend in a very threatening manner. His actions were instigated by me being a dumb ass kid. He took a walking swing at me, I ducked it and he kept walking toward my friend and punched hi in the face. It was then over. He let go of his aggression at my friend's expense and even offered us a ride (we were hitch hiking)
    Those two incidents gave me the confidence that I could at least duck a punch and helped me get through those teenage years without being too afraid.
    Later, in my 20's, I learned to verbally disarm people, often using humor. With drunks, I have pretended to know them and tried to start a conversation about a party we were at. Another time I was cornered by a very large guy and I straight up said, dude, you could easily kick my ass so I'll save us both the effort and buy you a drink.
    Im pushing 70 now so my chances of getting in a bar fight have diminished but now Im an easier target for criminals so I have increased my situational awareness.

    Bar fights seem to be mostly stereotypical events. One of my sparing partners from years ago was a musician that played in local bars. He may have seen 100s of fights that he described as "an exchange of words, one guy pushes the other and then the punches fly". Another comment on bar fighters came from a tournament teammate of the head of our martial arts school. He was a bouncer at one time and described being attacked by bar fighters as taking on someone who was "fighting in slow motion", having to wait to deliver his own counter. That included taking on several attackers.
    For me, I mostly avoided fight bars. Once I had a drunk sit down at my table at a bar and refused to leave. I got up and left. I don't think he was much of a threat, but why bother? I never went back to that bar.

      If you fight a lot, like train weekly, almost everyone that doesn't train seems like fighting in slow motion. Even certain moves from trained fighters can seem slow if you are looking for it. when doing full time taekwondo I could see someone attacking with their back leg, register it, and straight kick them in the torso, before their kick landed. a trained person in a bar fight most likely ends it before the first push is over.

    I kinda didn’t like the idea of striking first if the guy says it’s not cool. I think you should still be ready, but it might deescalate without striking. However, I guess you really have to have a good risk assessment of the situation, because you can’t always count on some things to calm down. Is it ok to make sure you’re not squared up and try to keep it from escalating? Being squared up I know makes you more vulnerable to the first attack (should it come). I’ve personally stood off to the side and kept my hands by my shoulder once while I observed a balling of the fist. Keeping my hands looking causal but non threatening. However, I didn’t see this guy going mad and swinging right away, but the body language was mid line aggressive. Just kept my hands by my shoulder as if to look like I was just folding my arms. Can that be ok? I’m not saying this could be the best, but ok in the sense of being ready to guard the head and defend a sucker punch?

    • @futatorius
      @futatorius 2 роки тому

      Close. Your peripheral vision is at its best in broad daylight. But in dim light, it's relatively better than your focused vision. That's because the center of your visual field has cone cells that give good color vision, but which need more light to work well. The periphery has rod cells and motion-detection cells that can still work well in dim light. That's also why people who do naked-eye astronomy can see faint stars better in their periphery.

    In his book "The Face of Battle", John Keegan characterized different types of combat interactions on the battlefield. One facet of violent combat/battle that stood out to me was that typically, when an enemy turns his back to run during a battle, the winning party "goes in for the kill". In other words, when presented with easy prey following a violent interaction, an aggressor will be enticed to aggress more, almost as if driven by animal instinct. Think of cavalrymen pursuing and cutting down enemy infantry as they flee.
    Couldn't the shoulder hunching and "defensive" posture invite such behavior from an opponent in a bar fight?

    • @asdfasdf-ob7mo
      @asdfasdf-ob7mo 2 роки тому

      I don't think so, as being in a defensive posture is still a fight - not flight - reaction. It's pointless smashing the bottle on the table, leave them feeling stunned and surprised before you cut them. Just remember their ain't any rules in a bar or street fight. And also most importantly, the bully will learn his lesson. I have met plenty an ex bully with the scars and he said waking up in hospital with stitches on his face is the best reminder for him to change his lifestyle. He owes the guy that surprise bottled him and shanked him his life. Now the ex bully is the nicest guy in the world and he is reminded of his bad past everytime he looks in the mirror.

    I've used this in real life with success. I've also been in a lot of bar brawls. This is nothing more than one of many tactics you can employ if 1) the situation calls for it and 2) you actually have the training to pull it off. For example, this works great if the other guy won't let you out, you're able to sell the fear, and you happen to train Muay Thai.
    One of the best tactics to learn if you insist on spending time in bars is the cross step. If someone taps you on the shoulder or shoulder bumps you, there's a good chance that they're setting you up for an attack. The way the shoulder tap / bump works is they use their left hand to tap your right shoulder, or vice versa, getting you to look that direction just as their right hand smashes you square in the mush with a haymaker. So, you take the same-side leg and step both forward and across your body, while turning 180*. So, right shoulder tap equals right leg stepping forward and 45* to the left. Just do it naturally, like you're walking to your left. You're off-line of any strike, have created distance, and are now looking at your attacker. If it's just Joe from the office, you can start chatting or whatever. If you do see a punch, you need to respond immediately or you're probably still going to get punched. The playing scared tactic isn't going to work here because this guy's already decided that you're going to the hospital tonight and there isn't a referee around to stop it.

    Been in my fare share of street fights. Facing a drunk person is easier and harder. Let me explain. Generally a sober person will back down to me, because he will see it in my eyes, stance, and how carry myself. That this guy has been down this road before, and win or lose it won't be easy. A drunk IT guy, whose 130 pounds and no fighting background doesn't know any better when he's drinking. Watch most bouncer fights, the guy is usually small and weak looking and he's still trying to fight. I do disagree with one point in the video. Drunk guys are actually easier to beat if you're sober. Hand/eye is heavily compromised and it's much easier to knock a drunk person out than someomeone who has his coordination intact.

    Here’s my take on this. I grew up in rough council estates and as a scrawny kid often became the target of the “Alpha”. As a result I learned to fight and to my surprise watching this video, the Blade stance was my most useful defence. I fought people twice my weight successfully and often and even got the name Cock of the school (an English phrase and one I never wanted). My experience served me well through to my 30’s defending myself in bars and clubs. Doesn’t mean I don’t have any scars lol.
    Recently I was driving in to a car park and three guys walked in front of me in the road. The guy in the middle was massive, 6ft6, mid 20s and ripped. I didn’t stop for them and he shouted something. I ignored it but my missus started chirping. After we stopped and got out of the car he targeted her with all sorts of abuse and even though I was crapping myself I had to get between them so I did and naturally in the Blade stance. I saw his two mates instantly put a couple of meters between them and him and knew what I was up against. A pro or nut job. I held ground in this stance, fists clenched but de-escalated saying I’m not fighting you unless you go for my missus. He muttered a bit, his mates came back and it was neutralised quickly.
    We walked away and I gave my missus hell for putting me I. That position. In the background I heard his mates ask why didn’t you take him, he replied his stance. Not worth the hassle.
    Edit, forgot to mention, we later found through FB that he was a regional MMA champ.
