Nice job with the power rakes. They sure are effective and seem to be much more forgiving than a box blade for that kind of leveling work. In a perfect world with a yard full of implements a box blade does a better job IMO of doing the spreading, then one could fine tune with the power rake. A box blade is designed for that specific type of job, along with a hydraulic top link they can do wonders on a project like that. The biggest mistake most people make using a box blade on this type of project is overworking the material. With each pass of a box blade it will start to separate the fines from the stone, that's where the power rakes really shine, again, another good video Tim.
I dunno, Pat. Pretty hard to do this task any faster and easier than how we did it. When I fold those wings down, the power rake behaves a lot like a box blade. If I were to lower that gate a bit, it would be even MORE like a box blade.
Power rake has the same issue with overworking...the big stuff comes to the top. Kinda frustrating. Like making pancake dough, right?

Just finished the building today...so over the next couple of weeks, you will see the entire process....including the struggles we had setting it up. Overall, we are VERY pleased. I won't share anymore at this point...don't want to spoil the suspense!

I love our little Gehl skid steer for rock leveling. Great for small spaces but can get the job done quick with a proficient operator.
Great job. Love watching your channel and all the different attachments for the different jobs you do. Wished you lived closer to Arkansas so you could do some projects down here. Going to see if Ventrac has a dealer close to us just to rent for a week or so to get some projects accomplished on my small acreage and drive. Thanks for sharing your time and projects.

I no longer have my garden tractor. I no longer have a use for it. You mentioned using just about anything to move loose gravel. I've leveled a lot of fresh gravel with my Simplicity tractor. The mower decks on Simplicity have a full-width roller on the back of the deck for striping the grass. I found it to be multi-purpose! Many people couldn't believe I leveled the entire driveway with a mower deck! Neighbor's driveway, too. (Many times.)

Been in the rock truck driver shoes before. Tailgating like that is HARD. It’s always comforting to see equipment on a site like yours Tim. Knowing someone can level out the high spots makes a hard job somewhat easier.
Yea, we really tried to calm him. We weren't too concerned about the spreading. Anything he did, we didn't have to do.
However, I could see that he has been 'beat up' by dissatisfied customers WAY TOO OFTEN!

It really WAS smooth after we drove our truck back and forth on it. It has since came loose a bit due to driving, turning, etc on it during the building setup. But we're pleased with the floor.

Great video as usual! As far as I know you don't need to use a hydraulic top link with a power rake as a properly adjusted rake the chain box on the end is always supposed to be 90 degrees with the ground.
I thought of an inexpensive way to insure you put the locking handles down. Go to a bike shop and get red bicycle hand grips to place over the locking handles. The grips will provide a cushion to grab and be a visual reminder that the locks are up.
That's the kind of rock we have in Kansas too. My house foundation is limestone laid 21-24 inches wide and some places up to 8 ft high. I'm on a high hill in my area that is all limestone surrounded by woods to all sides. If you want a yard you have to build retaining walls and haul in soil. Six dumptruck loads to have a back yard at my home.
We have a cat with the same markings. His name is Jack and he is a people cat. He comes to his name and through out the day he insists that you quit what you are doing and pet him.. That is when we have a coffee break and pet session.😻😸☕️

Need to find an ice rink machine and modify the cutter to be a mover :-) Nicely done! Water down the mix and it will settle. Our driveway is that - dusty to start with but once compacted and watered (rain!) it becomes solid. My road man puts down road base - tiny to medium mix rock and chip. Then adds rock on top. I get 2 stacks on the side and use it to patch as needed from the Trash or delivery trucks.
One more point about the ventrac with the front implement: you're driving on the flattened area, so your machine is moving around less. Easier to keep it flat.

i am really wanting to get a power rake for our track loader... we just got a 279d caterpillar loader and love it... a power rake is 10k for it but its such a nice tool... maybe we will get one sooner than later... we did get a 6 way blade for it and a blue diamond severe duty brush cutter already as well as ordered an eterra trencher... great tools to have in the lineup

put your bucket in a dump position and set it down and run your bucket like a dozer blade you can make a grade and move stone easily. Hope fully helps from a old operator
Great video. As with any tractor and attachment, there are pros and cons. Having either unit would be a back saver. With the imatch hitch, been there, done that. Dont feel alone. Your supervisor running the camera didn't catch it either so yiure in the clear. Ha ha. $$$$ over amount of use is the only thing keeping me from getting one. For no more than i do, the tiller and loader works. Not as fast, but gets it done. But i do like seeing it in action. Keep selling tractors.
I have crushed limestone. After 4 years it’s settled quite a bit and formed up well. I should have gotten 1 extra load as I’ve lost a few inches after settling and compaction.
That dust will combine over the years into a fairly solid mass as it gets infiltrated with water.
On my quick hitch I put the levers down before I attach the implement the catches still allow you to hook up and you can hear them snap shut. I’ve forgotten to close them a few times before using this method and bent the top hook a little. Quick hitch is my favourite accessory.
Yes, can be done on my quick hitches, but the pins don't go in as easily, so I usually manually open them. ....of course, when I make a mistake, it seems like a stupid approach!!
I had a much smaller shelter logic shelter controling condensation was quite a problem. It seemed to rain inside more than it did outside.
I noticed it when you we’re talking about the power rake standing right by it with your hand on the lock lever.
I guess Mary is still on walkabout..... or a pile of poop somewhere. I hate that she’s gone. Never cared for cats much until a stray kitten wandered up on Christmas Eve a couple of years ago. Let her in to feed her and she’s been a close companion ever since. Even our puppy dogs love her.

I had that same size rock delivered which was cheap but delivery price was 90 bucks. It was about 2 yards. So I know a guy that had a dump truck where he could bring a larger amount of rock while charging only 75 bucks. The second guy brought river rock, around 6 yards for less that 175 dollars.
They make a fabric to place over the dirt on which the rock is placed. Keeps the weeds out and helps keep the soil from rutting. The top soil was not removed, usually that is soft and not a good foundation? Best to you.
we'll see how it goes. I don't expect any issue. I was too lazy to remove 2-3 ft of topsoil!!!
I think those power rakes are good for trim work, but I think the best machine for grading that stone start to finish would be a D3. That's mostly what people use in my area.
Don't worry about any mistakes, if I only make 2 a day, it's a good day. To bad our rental place doesn't have one of the power rakes. They do have a tiller but that is not the same and I don't think that they would get one for just one person. Tractor on from west central Illinois
Power rakes do a great job with gravel. Sir the other day I was headed north through greenwood on 37 and spotted a trailer southbound with a John Deere and Ventrac. Good looking equipment!

Great work with the rock, the Ventrac works in so many applications, but like you said it maybe cost prohibitive for a lot of the viewers. Could you do some videos on other attachments to the 1025 for large yard grass work like aeration, verticutting, seeding and applying fertilizer. We have 2 1/2 acres around our house with a good portion treed. It's always a challenge to get the right aftermarket attachments that work well, mainly with the 3pt. Any help would be appreciated. I just traded my 2007 2305 in for a new 1025r and as always looking for more attachments to make my life easier. Thanks

If it doesn't look right, sound right or feel right, then its probably not. A good lesson thats hard to remember sometimes :). I would also be interested in a EDC tool guide. I see you always have tools on your belt.
I have been working toward a 'pocket tools' video. Never heard the term EDC until now...looked it up...makes sense. Anyway, I have been testing some different approaches to carry. ...want to have a good solution or several good options before I create the video.
a question for you Tim. Why did you leave the topsoil under your shed floor gravel,? where I live all the gravel would disappear into the top soil over time,

Crushed rock is not cheap though.

Your limestone looks exactly like Ohio limestone. We're lucky here too as there's a plentiful supply. A 40 ton load of 57's cost me $450 two years ago, so about the same. Sounds like you have a bit of a cold going on there sir. Get some rest. 😁
That shed floor turned out great. Great episode. You mentioned in a different episode you 'used' to be a software engineer. Is this your full time gig now? You are almost 'retired', doing what you like. Congrats.
I left my software job spring 2019.
You might say semi-retired, but Christy and I work about 60-70 hours per week each now.

A few passes with a vibratory roller would make that material as hard as concrete. I have a similar product on the floor of my shop. It works well but is hard to seep.lol
Tim I paid $450 for 25 ton of 57 limestone delivered about a month ago. The quarry is about 40 miles away.

If only you had a dump trailer that could have saved you a fortune in trucking fees. Yes, it would take longer because you would be doing the driving back and forth to the gravel pit, but you would have saved so much from the trucking fees. Plus you could have shown off your dump trailer as you did the work yourself. Maybe on the next shed. Or the driveway entry/exit from this shed.
per some comments how come you did not remove the top soil then add some cheap pit run or so to get within 4-6" of final grade then add the crush to finish.
Also with my shelter logic sheds I put down some 6mm vapour barrier and that makes a HUGE difference with condensation...things actually stay dry, otherwise moisture becomes a problem
a friend suggested starting with cheaper river gravel. I just found it easier to spread with consistent material. Lazy I guess.
Never thought about vapor barrier below the rock. ...did think about removing the topsoil...but it is 2-4 ft deep. Too lazy to do that. This soil will hold it up pretty well I think. It is quite unusual.
Vapor barrier definitely makes a huge difference. I have it in one of my hoop garages and it stays much dryer than the other garages. I also have stall mats over the Vapor barrier. They work great!

@@TractorTimewithTim Not at all....I just put mine right on top of the gravel....just compact it smooth and lay it down and tuck tape the seams if needed. just have to be more careful moving stuff around on it or lay out some "heavy" landscape/road felt on top... is worth doing. I'm amazed how much frozen condensate accumulates under the vapour barrier over the winter.
Main thing I notice about the Worksaver power rake is it looks as tough as the one Deere/Frontier has. Did it perform the same or better than with your 1025R? I've been through the limestone saga before. Many years ago when we were putting an extension on our driveway, we had a base layer of larger #2 limestone (ankle turners). Had to borrow a neighbor's 8N tractor with a rear blade to move the stone around. Eventually, we had #4 stone over top before waiting about 7 years for asphalt (natural gas line under driveway). Wish we had a power rake for that.
And they aren't even going to with full loads of rock in my hometown when we haul rock are load one foot taller than the side boards on the dump truck
Do you know what the wind rating is for these buildings, I cannot seem to find it on their website.
I have some doubts as around here we get 50-60 mph winds in winter,and not to mention the occasional hurricane.

I have a avant loader. Want to get either a power rake or a tiller they call stoneburrier. Is the power rake working well directly in an old lawn? Will mostly be used for restoration of old lawns and prepping new lawns for seeding.

Should of put some geomat undrr that stone especially if it’s a modified stone (powder with small stone)
That's cheap for stone. I once paid $650 for 10 yards of sand and it wasn't just sand this had pea gravel mixed in. Love the video's keep up the good work and god bless and stay safe.

2-4 ft of topsoil. how exactly do you propose that I replace that? I think it will be fine.The rest of the driveway has been done the same way.
You replace it with cheaper fill, like I had to do. Didn’t expect 2-4 ft I was just talking about the rich top layer. Anyway, excited to see the building.
When you talk hoops. Do you mean like the curved airport style round hangers with 50,000 bolts? I helped put one up. Hydraulic scissor lift was a must.

If you keep the buket flat to the ground it levels a lot better
Tim, the little Ventrac continues to impress. Logic might dictate that the much longer , larger setup with Tractor with power rake would fine grade better than the shorter Ventrac, but in practice the Ventrac looks to be superior, even out in wide open areas. Road graders need to be very long to work well but somehow the Ventrac and power rake do not.
On a side note-
Do you ever think about mounting a camera/monitor on your larger tractors to help with visibility?
I'm thinking of installing one of the inexpensive 11" monitor, four channel setups on the 2755. Just getting too hard to sit twisted around for hours looking at 3 pt attachments. I'm hoping the front cameras could show what the bucket edge/ pallet forks are up to.

This is one of the 3 options. This is the radial option.

You should rent a drive on vibratory roller to pack it down well. Did you do a final laser check to see how close you were to level across the area? It seems from the video you eyeballed it pretty well. You are lucky not to have bent the quick hitch or have enough angle to prematurely wear our the PTO knuckles, though I am sure you would have felt the bumping.
We ran our Ridgeline over it to pack it down. Worked great! It isn't perfectly level, but we had the foundation beams which helped to provide a reference on each side. I think it is good enough.
