This man absolutely needs to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A biopic movie also. Fascinating life and times!
I was born in 1977. I grew up listening to Harry Chapin and to my father playing his songs on guitar. He is by far my favorite music artist of all time. No one is able to tell stories like he did. I wish I could have seen him live. As others mentioned, he truly belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Harry should have his own Hall of Fame in a class all his own.
Screw The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
I had the honor of singing with Harry in 1979 when he played one of his solo charity concerts. He played the Tampa Theater and my future husband and I were 2nd row center. When he was going to play Mr. Tanner he asked “ if there any stone-cold Harry Chaplin fans in the audience. My husband shot my hand up and Harry picked me and one other gentleman. I have no idea how it sounded but we sang Big John Wallace’s countermelody. It was the most memorable thing besides the birth of my son that has ever happened in my life. After the concert he did his usual thing to meet and sign autographs. Of course I bought his book of poetry. He was so sweet. He recognized me, gave me a hug and kiss and said,”there’s my favorite back-up singer”. I’m now in my 60’s and it’s one of my fondest memories! RIP Harry. I’m sure you’re still singing to the stars 🙏🏻
My father brother and I moved his furniture 3 times and he carried furniture with us never mind how humble of a man he is. And Sandy is beautiful ❤ ❤
I saw Harry at local shows. He founded the Long Island Cares food bank which is still going strong. RIP Harry.
I too sang with Harry, September 21, 1977, Rustin, Louisiana. One of life’s greatest moments. He asked me to come onstage because I had written him a letter thanking him for coming.
Come back to this time and time and time again... Forever and ever deep within our Hearts & Souls... We love you, always, Harry Chapin 🎵🎶🎵
WE REALLY MISS U, HARRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I remember when I heard that Harry was killed. I was on my own in an office, I fell to my knees and instantly felt embarrassed that I was so upset about the death of someone that I only had the pleasure of seeing once on stage [Australia]. Then I realised that the intimacy I felt was the gift he gave us. That man moved me in ways that even today I feel a profound sense of loss. To this day I think of Harry Chapin, a life well lived. I cannot tell you how much I wish he was still with us. Vale Harry Chapin.
This was an excellent comment. I agree with you, he had a way of making you feel like you were best friends sitting in his living room, even though there 10 thousand people around you. His family is sure doing him proud with Chapin Foundation, I am sure he is smiling up there.
There is no concert like a harry Chapin concert. Exactly is the other comments are said felt like he was in your living room playing just for you for his best friends. Miss him So much
He was in Birmingham, Al on sat. Night before he died. I had planned to go but always had to work ! Like the last time Elvis was in B'ham-- I thought I would have time to see them later!
WHY BE SO UPSET, M O ANNIE? HE WAS MY G LIGHTFOOT OF THE LOWER 48. M O ANNIE, U SLIPPED I THE MUD OF LIFE. THE MASTER HAD ENUFF CASH TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER. THAT REMINDS ME, I SAW A GUY'S PICKEMUP. ON THE TAILGATE WAS WRITTEN - GOD TOOK DALE EARNHARDT SR., CUZ HE NEEDED A DRIVER !!!!!!!!! I SHOOK THE GENTLEMAN'S HAND FOR 5- 10 MINUTES.😊😊😊😊😊
I feel the same way.
This was great..I felt I was back in college 1976....
Love Harry ❤❤❤😢😢
For years I had wondered about the man behind the Cats in the Cradle. After finally Googling it a few weeks ago, I found this was a man near my age that had died much too young, just a few years after Cats in the Cradle. I am heartbroken for a man that dies almost 40 years ago. After watching video after video, I have cried hours over the loss of Harry Chapin. I feel overwhelmed with grief for a man that should have had so much more time.
I was fortunate to see Harry perform about 20 times. I lived for a while in a place called Watertown, New York. One I was visiting a friend who worked at the student union at the local college. As I waited for him, I notice this wall with various signatures on it and there was Harry's signature "Keep the change". I asked my friend when did Harry perform here? He told me a years ago, he came up for a benefit concert one weekend, got snowed in and was stuck here for a week till the roads cleared (the airport which was a puddle jumper airport was also shut down). And then it hit me like a thunder bolt exploding in my mind....I've listened to Harry's live album too many times where at the beginning of "A Better Place to Be" he says this is about a small town in upstate New York, called Watertown where I spent a week there, one afternoon. Well I listened to the song again and then walked around town and found everything Harry mentioned in the song...the bar, Miller's Tool & Dye and the diner. I got chills and goose bumps. Harry was snowed in there so what did he do? but walked around town and created "A Better Place to Be"
Wow, Very Cool Story and Information. Thank You for Sharing :) I wish I could have seen Harry live and met the man, but I was born in 1981, four months after Harry left us.
I was in Watertown New York while in the Air Force in January 1980. It was a joint exercise with the Air Force, Army, and Marines. I slept in a nice warm cabin while all the grunts were out in the field tents freezing there butts off. I don't think you can get much further north than there. It's right on the Canadian border.
I had no idea that this was a real place, thanks!
Sometimes you have to slow down and listen to stories of everyday life.. To measure your experience from how life unfolds this is what great artist do..
They capture a brief experience of life through a song.. And you don’t why but you have to listen over and over to see if you miss something.. and you always do.. I’m so thankful that I live through the sixties and when the seventies came once we slowed down we listened to greatest so short lived and we don’t why.. Brilliance.. that is of Harry Chaplin a visionary singing to the blue sky so far away now.. LB September 2022
The late great Harry Chapin
I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert twice here in upstate NY. The second time I was standing right next to him after his performance. I was waaaaay to shy to even speak to him
Several years later I also had the pleasure of seeing his brother Tom in concert. This time I was not shy and talked with Tom and told him my story. He said Harry loved meeting and talking with his fans. I so wish I had conversed with him and asked for an autograph and a photo. And also wish Tom would perform again here in Oneonta NY
👍
way toooooo shy
I saw either Tom or Harry Chapin at F.A.U. in Florida.
Not only did he have great songs but also a most competent band,
to say the least!
Harry, I still listen to your music almost every day. Your music has meant so much to so many of us while you were still with us and long since you’ve passed. I still remember seeing you in concert and appreciated the kiss. Will never forget
His music never fails to take me to another place and time💔
Still listen to his music
Working in Sequoia National Park when heard of HARRY'S death, a very sad and ugly day even though I was surrounded by so much beauty. What a wonderful story-teller and human being!
I have this on DVD and play it often. I was only four when Harry passed on, but as I grew a little older he became my favorite singer songwriter. By the time I graduated high school in 95 I knew the words to all the songs (at least the ones that were commercially available at that time).
Harry Chapin was the best and he continues to influence me and many others in positive ways every day. It's been 39 years now without him, but his deeds and music live on.
When in doubt, do something! And keep the change....
He was born one year before me as I grew up with his music have been a fan for a long time.
I only saw Harry perform once while I was at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario (January 1980) and hadn't really paid a lot of attention to his music up till that point. I instantly became a huge fan. World Hunger Year was a cause that he was championing and he offered to stay around and sign anything that you bought and kiss the girls and apologized to the guys that he wouldn't kiss us. I think Sequel was in its infancy and the concert was the first time I ever heard it. One of my favourite songs is Old College Avenue and it brings back vivid memories of my times in Kingston. Taken far too young.
we should all strive to live by his example
I could listen to this song every day. Sweet memories
THANK YOU. AGAIN!
I listen to Harry often, but this is such a wonderful trip down memory lane. Watching his facial expressions when he sang, was always one of the best parts of seeing him in concert.
Awesome
I go to sleep with the speaker playing Harry every night.
not a bad choice.
You're not the only one!
I love all his music and the stories they tell. I’m a nostalgia freak and imagine I am in his songs. My husband and I were just newlyweds when he came to Va. Beach, Virginia and played at the, now torn down, Dome (Civic Center). I believe it was in 1974. We are now going on 52 years of marriage. My husband and I would sing along to his album. I miss you Harry Chapin. I will never get tired of listening to your songs.
I’ve loved Harry’s music for 40 years but until 2 nights ago never saw him play. I feel I’m mourning his death for the first time.
Wonderful story teller . I was working at a radio station CHTK in Prince rupert in 1981 , and was on the air . The song playing was Taxi . when the newsman broke in about his death
Sandy and Josh, Thank you for sharing this intimate anthology and "Story of a Life". Harry's music touched and continues to stay with the soul of me.
The more I listen his music and the musicians he surrounded himself with all I can say is WOW......
Harry Chapin was one of the few true performer. He knew who he playing for, his family, friends and audience, not the studios. Like how he would evolve a song to best influence it's overall impact. Had seen him several times in concert and enjoyed how he would take the time to talk with the audience. That interaction and bantering endured him to fans. Not really sure who wanted to stay there longer, him or his fans. Cheap Seats Rule.
Great video of some great music

I miss Harry.
Thank you for posting this. Can't get enough of our beloved Harry. He always looks like he loves singing his story songs. So many artists look like it is a drag to sing the same songs to different venues. But not Harry, always a smile. You can tell he loved his 'Sandy'. What a great thing to have a man write a song for you.
That's the ticket, fantastic! Thanks for sharing this rare goodie. Another one I've only seen snippets of before. Harry was such a gift to us all.
Tiny Dancer You're Welcome...
This is for sale as a DVD.
The sadest song I ever heard, cays in the cradle and taxi. Harry leaving us at 39.😢
And my Dad left us just when I turned 39.
this is an incredible tribute ....
I love this lady... What a representative for Harry's music...
He died too soon. I wonder often if he couldn't have changed thing in this world. He sure tried. Saw him several times in concert and a few years ago finally made it to his grave. Very strange thing happened. He's there I know. I hope he's resting in peace, but I think he left too much behind he hadn't finished. Hope he is in peace. He accomplished a lot.
Fan of harry
phew ? amazing gifted person.ea song easily made into a movie.
His stage face was his real face. You can just tell. There's a realness there, isn't there
Liked how the background singer used counterpoint singing.
So the ads could not wait until the songs were over? WOW
Ad block, i use it on videos like these.
He sure does look like his Daddy.
