- Shane Audiobook by Jack Schaefer. A Classic Western. Abridged. Read by Peter Marinker.
Shane, publish in 1949, was the Jack Schaefer’s first and most successful novel and is in multiple “Greatest Western Novels of all Time” lists. Taking place in the old west, Shane, a mysterious stranger who rides into Wyoming, befriends then works for a homesteading family. The father comes to respect Shane, the mother develops feelings for him, and the son wants to be like Shane when he grows up. A greedy cattleman wants the land of all the area’s homesteaders and will kill to do so. Will Shane, a former gunfighter who has laid down his guns, take them up again to defend the homesteaders. (Of course, he does. It wouldn’t be much of a story if he rode off into the sunset when the going got rough. Sheesh! 😊)
Jack Schaefer (1901-1997) was born in Cleveland Ohio. As a child he enjoyed reading books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan, A Princess of Mars), Alexander Dumas (Three Musketeers here on GBOT), Charles Dickens (David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities - here on GBOT) and Zane Grey (Riders of the Purple Sage - Here on GBOT)
After his college studies (Oberlin College - the first college to admit women) Mr. Schaefer became a journalist. He followed that by working at a State Reformatory directing the educational program. His first novel Shane was published in 1949 after first appearing in a magazine 3 years earlier. Since then, it has sold over 12 million copies and has been translated into 35 different languages. Jack Schaefer continued to be successful in his writing career, writing Westerns and earning a Newberry Honor award for Old Ramon, and later promoting wildlife preservation with his book Conversations with a Pocket Gopher.
Peter Marinker (1941 - until the Great Director in the sky says “That’s a Wrap!”) Born in London England, Mr. Marinker is best known for his voice work in TV shows (Star Fleet, Monkey, check UA-cam), audiobooks (The; Examined Life, Original Bambi, Black Russian), and Video Games (Encased, Demon Soul’s). He performs both British and American accents and does so very well.
But I digress
Shane and several other Jack Schaefer novels were made into movies. Shane, the 1953 movie starring Alan Ladd and Jean Arthur was a big success and was nominated for 6 Oscars with 1 win. The singular-looking boy was played by Brandon De Wilde who grew into a fine-looking young man. He kept busy performing in numerous TV shows. Sadly, at age 30 as Brandon was driving to visit his wife in the hospital, he died in a crash. RIP Brandon De Wilde and may you all drive safely. - Розваги
Had to go summer school in 7th or 8th grade and our teacher read this book to us after we finished our work. I am 37 now and I still remember how good this book was, thank you for uploading it.
Watch the movie 3-4 times a year. Kids, now out of HS still love the movie.
One of THE greatest western stories EVER
Incredible
i am 74 - saw the movie when i was 4 or 5 - me my brother took turns being Shane & Wilson playing cowboys - every time Shane came back as part of a dbl. feature Dad took us - it was when i reached 7th Grade Hawthorne Jr. High Lorain Ohio - we were given paperback books to read - Shane was one of them - never knew it was a book - well it was different than the movie - then i went into school library - the hard cover book was there even was illustrated - i bet I've watched that movie 100 times in my 74 yrs. - the best western ever made to me - - George Stevens made a classic - i finally ordered the paperback book - they want big money for hard bound - some are illustrated some are not
I have seen Shain the Movie 3-4 times, enjoying one of the great Western movies of all times, to date. But the book was even better , with three adults ben like one family, but with good test and Family love and care. Yes, I have to say even better than that Great Movie !! of the same name!!
Agreed
I love this book and the movie

For me, having read Shane long ago, Peter Marinker's narration was a revelation, bringing the book to life again, on another level. Utterly mesmerizing.

I love that I can listen to this in one sitting

"Wilson was fast but Shane faster."
Thanks for the great story!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved the movie, it's my first time reading/listening to the original book.
Growing up is realizing that Shane, Joe and Maryanne are an awesome polycule!❤
Well done , enjoyed the reading as impactful in my opinion as George Stevens film
Quelle belle histoire, si bien lue ! Merci !
If yall don't know what it says it says "What a great story, so well read! THANKS !"
Fantastic job!
Really dig this audio reading! Awesome story.
Excellent. I can picture the movie as he reads.
Cowboy stories bring joy to readers all over the world and it is the only world not found in other countries. Jack Schaefer"s "Shane" bears comparison with the finest stories in the English speaking world. More western author's like Louis L" Amour will be much appreciated.
Hallelujah
😔 No consideration given to Shane's bleeding wound (blood lose) & that filthy lead slug in Shane's body bringing on "infection" (plus the resultant shock). ??
EXCELLENT story, and excellent presentation !! 👍

Mysterious rider rode into the valley in the summer of 1889
This TimeStamp adds very important "context". 👍
Classic good vs evil set in the west
Listened for the third time,A true love story.
The film actually gave it a bit of context where fletcher had been there before the homesteaders and actually tamed the land (and no doubt the indigenous population). Yes, he was leaning heavily on the homesteaders but he felt he had a right. I like stories better when it is not pure good versus pure evil because real life never is. Never.
Was named after the flim. Didn't know there was a book before.
❤
Book > Movie
I’m actually named after the movie
Sheesh !
The Fletchers became the Rykers in the movie. Bob became Joey. 0.45.00
I am *not* a fan of Westerns. But this is a great story.
Voice characterizations don't always do a story justice. This tale fortunately is able to overcome some really bad voices.
I have heard some readings that I would rather not bother with but I thought this man read it well. None of it was 'really bad' unless you have your own pre-conceived version of how each character should sound. Is it that you watched the film and now want them to sound the same? Anyway, you ask a lot for no money.
Cattlemen versus homesteaders
@OrlandoBrown Yes sir/ma'am
Correction: Evil violent godless power-hungry ruthless followers of Satan [traveling on the Broadway toward HELL and the subsequent White Throne Judgment, then being thrown alive into the Eternal Lake of FIRE. (According to Scripture).
22:00 no mention of Shane sharpening that well worn ax on one of those big-round pedal-powered free-standing sharpening stones.
Dull ax blades are DANGEROUS, and terribly inefficient (wastes much much time & muscle-power. :)
Quit ruining the book plz and movie their good as is if you have a problem with it then you can make another Shane yourself
An axe is a tool, much like any other tool. It is as dangerous as the man that is holding it.
I always wanted wilson to kill Shane!
I had the same thoughts about Jar-Jar.
What?? Why??
