- We are doing something a little bit different this week. We are going over my personal basic 5 rules of elevating ANY space that you have creative control over. Whether it's your home, your apartment, your bar, your restaurant, or even backyard! These tips can be applied across the board. I offer my critique as well as some solutions...or sometimes I just go on a small rants about these things that just really bother me 😇
**Disclaimer that I do not own any pets nor do I have children** these tips are for my personal aesthetic. Aesthetic aside, always put safety first!

I agree with all 5 points. I don’t have any fake candles, however I noticed you saying you had to check the candle at the bar to see if it was real. Since the bar couldn’t have real candles for safety reasons probably, it would beat having an overhead fluorescent light. : ) I liked this video

Number 1 thing to avoid: istening to other people tell you what to have or not have in your home. Our home is the one place on earth where we should do whatever we want..there should be no rules..a home is to be lived in and enjoyed by the owners. One persons tacky may be another persons prized possession

My son actually just got me a little candle lamp for Mother’s Day. It’s a small lamp that you set a candle under. It actually melts the candle so you don’t have to light the wick. I love it.

When you have children, fake candles are a “must”. If you have allergies, fake plants are okay. There are certain times for certain times.

2 things: candles, allergies can be triggered by burning a candle. I miss the flicker of candlelight so, yes, fake candles can be better than nothing in small doses.
Fake flowers: there are times when I am far too busy to maintain a plant. I have killed a pothos. I do have allergies. Real plants can be challenging with pets. Which I have. Therefore, I am very discerning about any faux plant I bring into my home. Right now I have a small mix of both. Some people really haven’t “seen” the difference. So, with both candles or plants, do I deprive myself because real isn’t always possible? I think not. Just be discerning & deliberate with choices. The rest of your opinions I agree with.
Hi Linda, thank you for sharing your perspective/story! It’s very true, if I were to have allergies, pets, kids, etc. things would be VERY different. We all must do what we can to enjoy our homes! ♥️
As a 74 yr old woman I love the Luminaria candles that flicker like teal ones. I appreciate your views and agree with most of them. Love your new place and look forward to your videos. God bless.

This brings up good points we weren’t allowed candles in college so I got a candle warmer I never turned it off! I have never forgot to blow out a candle.

Your take on fake candles is so on point and “fake candles can burn in hell” made me cackle. I have two faux trees that I’m looking at like “your days are numbered”. The Twlight Zone is still one of my favorite shows ever. I came across your channel recently and am really enjoying your content🤗

Absolutely agree with you, can't stand artificials either,but what to suggest to a person who's got a fire alarm in the apartment and it can go off even if you light one candle?
Oh boy, that is a tough one! Perhaps a small table lamp could do the trick or if you're looking for fragrance, a nice essential oil diffuser! There are also ways to maintain the candles so that they produce less smoke. Some examples are trimming the wick, covering the candle rather than blowing it out, placing in an area with less air movement (out of reach from fans or AC units), and using soy wax or beeswax candles that produce less soot!

I love your opinions. I love my opinions (mainly because Im a practical, earthy Virgo who has good advice..but not all carry out my suggestions). Thinking about your bedroom.. no not. . furniture arrangement. I was thinking you could put the chest of draws in the closet and still have hanging space PLUS you would free up bedroom floor space. Love the new MCM carpet and new couch. Best wishes

Hi Gail! I love your channel and your decorating vibe. The only disagreement I have with your list of 5 things to avoid is #1…fake candles. I have battery operated candles throughout my home for two reasons. Scented candles affect my asthma which I recently got under control and I have two dogs (a Boxer and an Australian Shepherd). While they are great dogs they do get rowdy and I am petrified of fire. The fake candles became permanent years ago when we also had a cat. He has since passed on and I’ve been told by my pulmonologist not to get any more cats. Someday maybe I will be able to have real candles but that won’t be for a while! I love your channel and am so glad it’s growing!! ❤️ Chris

Interesting tips, I agree with all of them Gail. Like you, I have no children or pets, so different circumstances from some of the other commenters. You do you and I will do me. The tip about decor and art work meaning something really resonated with me - all of my art and the majority of my decor pieces are items I picked up during my travels. Every time I look at a piece I remember the trip and it makes me happy❣️

I love overhead lighting because it is hard to see without them esp to cross stitch, read, or fo othet crafts

Well just to add to the fake candle discussion- agree with commenter about cats! I love fake candles because I am so afraid of fire but I like to leave a couple fake ones burning as night lights. Anyway totally agree with everything else! Love your place and your channel!

I agree completely with decorating with things that are meaningful to you or speak to you. I like real candles but I have seen some pretty impressive fakes also. I can't lie to myself with fake plants though sometimes I wish I could. Enjoyed this little sit-down/sharing session. Hope you do more of them.

I have a few fake candles and use them for lighting when my electricity goes out in a storm.

I agree with fake candles, I have a fake plant in my bedroom, my cats eat my pants, like the entire thing. I wanted some green. So I did it. I am not sad about it, I mixed some dried eucalyptus with it and it is a vibe 😊. The rest of your video is so very real!! I am very mindful and intentional when purchasing items for my home. Lamps are the best with a warm light bulb. ❤

I agree on fake plants but I have to disagree on fake candles. You know why? Cats! I have cats. I have both real and fake candles. I totally understand what you mean about the soulless decor. Can we say farmhouse? I enjoyed the video!

I have NO prints on the walls here ... wall over my desk with framed family photos going back to the Great War (WW1), a framed clipped sig of Lord Nelson from a doc he signed, a print of his house from the 1840s, a Bob Dylan numbered painting signed by the Nobel Prize winner himself & a few other small works of art bought from a local auction house ... not a lot of wall space as I have four floor to ceiling double stacked bookcases ... very cosy in here & it is all me.

I love the analogy of the fake town to drive the point home about fake plants. So many Interior videos have the same everything, no personality, and so so plastic, as we used to call it. Ditto computer generated art.

I have such strong feeling against real candles!!!They can really burn in hell.I dont like having a neighbor who has actual flames burning all over their house and they cant remember to put their garage door down or bring in their trash cans. I agree with fake plants. I have over 50 real plants and i dont like cut flowers either.Give me the whole plant I got a dieffenbachia for Mothers Day.Who made you the judge of what is soulless. So yes, these are your opinions so now, here are mine. Starting with the “fake” candles. You totally forgot to mention people who have pets, specifically cats, and people who have children. Cats are notorious for jumping up on things and can easily knock over a candle, making a drippy mess or lighting their precious tail on fire. Kids, well we know how curious they are. Don’t think I need to say more there. Lastly, most candles are quite bad for you. Unless you’re buying high quality = expensive candles, they emit something (sorry forget what it’s called) but it is quite unhealthy to breathe. So obviously fake candles are sometimes the only/best option for someone who wants the look only. Faux plants are similar. Many are DEADLY to pets and children. Cheap ones do look just that but now, as opposed to even 10 years ago, many look very nice. Unless you’re looking closely or have too many in your home, they can add that touch of green much more safely and for less money than replacing real plants if you find you just can’t keep them alive. Clutter. Really? Address this after you’ve had children or pets! Kids = clutter, pets = messes that challenge even the neatest person. While your idea may be good, you just dismissed an entire huge amount of the world’s population with your opinions. Otherwise, I’ve enjoyed your content. I apologize in advance if this seemed unkind but thought I’d share regardless.

l am 65 and decorating is relentless, on going, ever changing, personal, sometimes affordable and trend driven etc.
Taste is subject by the context of the user.
I have moved coast to coast litterally, thousands of miles apart and owned and sold multiple homes.
And currently am doing same again,
Vibes and desires are a constant flux in change as anything in life, as the circumstances dictate.
And nothing less than politeness is a human and essential need of life

I'm not a big fan of "talking head" videos. Next time, might consider adding in some clips, photos of to what you are speaking about. Maybe I'm a little adhd, but... a little more "action", at least for me is nice.

@@theregoesgail But you seem to be judging people who do things that you choose not to do. Bars, for example, might have artificial candles because real ones pose a fire hazard. You literally describe yourself having a good feeling about the place and then changing when you closely examined the candles. You chided people for being concerned about forgetting to blow out the candles. So if they worry, they are inferior for taking a protective measure? I have asthma and can't be around candles. Am I deficient if I use an artificial one? You say others shouldn't use artificial candles because YOU feel fooled. That's a little more than a design choice. Stating a preference or an opinion is one thing. Disrespecting people who disagree or act contrary to your preference is quite another.
