0:51 "no honey, let a man turn off that lamp"
Probably the closest a couple could get to intimacy on TV those days.
@@whewfan rofl
It's called being courteous.
Thumbnail looked like the mother had no head!
Ovaltine: Cures lost heads!
IKR? Kinda creeped me out.....Ewwww!
It still cracks me up that married couples in old media never slept in the same bed. It's a wonder the baby boom ever happened.
In a lot of older commercials, it was customary to not show that degree of intimacy, especially if it'll be shown for the family audience.
It was a requirement in media. To have a couple share a bed was considered obscene. Though, there was a brief period of time during WWII where having separate beds was promoted in the home under the logic that it would allow each person to sleep better and avoid getting sick when the other person is sick. It may also have been a birth control attempt while rationing was still going on and silence during blackouts were required else a fine would be given. Imagine having a hungry crying newborn baby at that time, let alone with multiple other children to care for.
All it takes is once a year, according to scientists.
Sleeping in separate beds is better anyway. No fighting over covers. No disturbing your partner when you come and go. You can have your preferred mattress style. If you have restless legs, you won't bother your partner. I mean, the only downside is that it's slightly less convenient for intimacy.
It's because the storks bring them DUH
Before we had smart phones, we had smart jars.
Ha Ha
The simple day's
I well remember
Born in 1950
Dad bought a tv in 54.
Us boys
drank Ovaltine for about every meal.
Still love this stuff!
Separate beds, 50's
And the divorce rate was lower then than it is now. Maybe they were onto something.
@@noobmaster31 Because everyone was doped up on Ovaltine!
My parents are from 50s ig
The Wander Company, the original manufacturers of Ovaltine [Nestle markets it now], originally "pitched" their drink to adults as an aid for soothing, restful sleep before retiring for the night...then discovered there was a "children's market" for the product as well (beginning with sponsoring "LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE" on radio in the mid-'30s, right through "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT" on radio and TV). This ad is aimed strictly at adults, circa 1959.
The actual date has been amended. See above.
Haha Christmas stories "Be sure to drink your ovaltine"
The Capitol "Hi-Q" production music cue used here was by William Loose & John Seely- "Domestic" (aka "Shining Day").
It's interesting that Overtine was being advertised as a drink for adults. I always assumed it was a drink popular for kids.
so that’s what inspired my grandma to name her cat ovaltine
That's cute🐈😀
I thought the wife's head was missing in the thumbnail.
Twin beds, Yogi Bear background music, caffeine to help you go to sleep! So 1950's indeed!
My grandma would say'' want some chocolate milk ?'' And i got stinken Ovaltine ! She never had the good stuff, Bosco or CocoMarsh. Till this day i think of it as a Grandma hot coco drink.
LETS GO OVALTINE WOOO
So what WAS in that stuff, anyway? I remember it tasting like boiled socks.
How do you know what boiled socks taste like?
For Health, Strength and Energy Drink Ovaltine and Cool Ovo.
should hold me over for a few days
"You should have taken Ovaltine".
Like its a drug or something.
Who TAKES a beverage?
Guess it's better copy than "You should have drunk Ovaltine"..... *sigh*
it should be called round teen
I'm pretty sure that's Tommy Noonan as the "husband".
There is no test and good drink as well as ovaltine💯
I’ll take my creatinine.
Poor Ralphie lol
Ovanltine? A crummy commercial? Son of a b1tch!
CIRCLETINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* box sounds *
Owlcity brought me here
ANy resource that we can use to find out the year of these commercials?
*HOLY SHIT* I never knew Ovaltine was so *DANK!*
A crummy commercial?
i’ll never be able to look at ovaltine and not think about circletine
What date is this?
Actually, this never aired on "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT"; it appeared a few years AFTER the series had ended (the label [and "smart new jar"] is different from the one that originally appeared on "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT").

JOHNNY JACOBS: "'PREMIERE'.....has been brought to you by..........OVALTINE 'Natural', and 'Swiss Style' Chocolate Flavored OVALTINE! VItamin-rich OVALTINE- the world's most popular FORTIFIED food drink."
[November 1962]
wait. Why are they sleeping in separate beds?
He's a closeted homosexual.
made by Don Draper!!!!
But I thought it was a morning beverage for kids. The fuck
the gud stuff
Back when husband and wife slept in separate twin beds
At least on TV, that was the case. Censors and sponsors were afraid of showing too much intimacy so separate beds were the solution. However, I Love Lucy did show Lucy and Desi in one bed on at least one or two occasions, but otherwise they too slept in separate beds. One occasion was the episode where Lucy and Desi and Fred and Ethel were in two beds sleeping in a barn, having nowhere else to sleep on the way to Hollywood. Of course, one memorable gag was Fred and Ethel's bed moving around when a train passes.
Maybe they're brother and sister?
Well, we're not sleeping together so we might as well down some Ovaltine.
Good commercial, but the separate beds make me cringe.
....and isn't that Tommy Noonan as the "husband"?
Originally seen in 1962.
The background music was a cue from Capitol's "Hi-Q" production music library, which Hanna-Barbera also used extensively from 1957 through 1960 [Yep, I knew THAT, too]. I heard about Richard Webb trying to "revive" "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT" in the '70s (I'm sorry to say this, but who REALLY wanted to see him again?). I guess he was "Ben Finney" in real life- no wonder he was so convincing as that character. I'm just sorry he caused you and Gary so much hardship, Ira...
ovaltine??? a crummy commercial??? son of a bitch.
@generationboom lol i don't know
Nah I prefer CIRCLETINE!!!!!
No sex going on in this house at all.
No drugs either, apparently
Trey Warnock On the contrary, they have a shit ton of Ovaltine!
