Supposedly Nolan felt Rodgers was less coachable due to his personality, and they liked Alex Smith opening the door for his mother at the 49er facility. Smith's biggest liability as a pro prospect was that he wasn't day 1 ready to play. He needed to have gone to Green Bay to sit for 3 year behind Favre, learn the game, then would have reached more of his potential. I think people underrate how good of a college prospect Alex Smith was. He was dual threat in an era where that wasn't that common. The old 2006/2007 tape of Smith looks a lot, lot different than the more game manager style he would be associated with post 2010. He had a good deep ball, then had his shoulder injured in 2007 which very likely hurt it going forward. Eye test in 2005 is different than many years later. Hilarious seeing Aaron Rodgers under center every snap taking the conventional 3 step drop like a robot and making every pass from the pocket. In today’s game he’s in the shotgun every snap, many times with an empty back field and rolling out of the pocket throwing dimes. Crazy how much the game has changed in a short period of time at the college and pro level. These offensive formations seem like forever ago. Imagine Rodgers in the shotgun running a spread offence at the college level, no huddle up tempo. With his rocket arm plus the ability to run, my god

Not sure if this would be a smart choice over Smith in the draft.. Sure, he gains a few yards once in a while, but he dances around the pocket too much. He won't last in the NFL.
Because only 2 teams were in need of a QB that badly, and to be fair, only 1 really needed one. San Francisco. It could have came down to a coin flip, San Fran went with Alex Smith, passed in the hometown boy Rodgers, and Green Bay picked him up on the slip. Rodgers easily could have went #1, and most likely Smith would have then went #24.
It was between him and Smith for first overall. Smith was seen as more polished - Rodgers’ mechanics were a concern, as were the fact that Jeff Tedford coached QBs that had been taken high in the draft had been total flops (see Joey Harrington). The teams below San Fran either didn’t need a QB, didn’t have cap space for a QB (this was before rookie deals were a thing), or had head coaches whose jobs were on the line and couldn’t risk drafting a rookie QB. If Green Bay doesn’t draft him he either goes to Washington (and gets ruined because Dan Snyder), or San Fran take him 33rd overall (and he’s ruined because they were a mess until Harbaugh came in). McCarthy and in particular Tom Clements cleaned up his mechanics a lot in Green Bay. Clements is doing the same with Jordan Love right now.
It was actually because Alex smith was deemed to be more athletic - he was a better runner than Rodgers, and supposedly the sf staff found Rodgers too cocky, whatever that meant. Smith turned out to be a good QB but nothing like Rodgers.
That’s not true. There were at least 10 teams that needed a quarterback. Those teams didn’t value him highly enough. The browns, dolphins, buccaneers, cowboys (Romo hasn’t been established yet), cardinals, redskins, raiders, saints, chiefs, 49ers. In addition, it could be argued that the bears, rams, vikings, texans, ravens, lions quarterback situation had ran its course.
