Listening to Meshuggah they sound so chaotic, yet listening to Haake he sounds so utterly in control.

That's what makes them special. Aside from the absolute monstrous musicianship , they essentially flip the common dynamic and the drums act as the lead instrument/"vocal" while the vocalist and other musicians are generally rhythmic accents on top of probably the most technical drummer to ever live.

I don't know how you're getting "chaotic" from any part of Meshuggah. With the exception of the guitar solos to me it's the extreme opposite-highly planned and precise. Chaos would be something like Deathspell Omega and a plethora of Black Metal or Post-Hardcore acts.

The ghost notes is what make haakes drumming so complex

It's actually just your mind playing tricks on you. If you can play basic 16th note grooves on a high hat, you just play your snare hand on the snare instead of the high hat with less velocity. Ghost notes are easy af once you change your perspective.

I would never expect it to be in 4/4 xd Im really shocked

That's meshuggah for you. "Technically" they write everything in 4/4. It's more like ultra weird time signatures with a 4/4 beat laid over it with the cymbals and snare while the kick drums follows the guitars (so polyrythms). The intro to this is some wacky ass time signature with basic 4/4 over top and a snare hit on the 3rd beat of every bar. Interesting stuff

@@ethgraham Yeah 😅 But the most shocking thing for me is that I always perceived is so unreachable that I didn't managed to notice that everything by them has 4/4 pattern

That moment where it clicked for me was a watershed moment. Wait until you realise that Combustion from Obzen is displaced an 8th note from the beat throughout the entire song.

You could say pretty much almost every Meshuggah song is in 4/4, just, they use alot of polyrhythms! :)
