This is a luxury modern day camp out.
Trappers did not have canvas, it was hard to come by. The main cooking vessel was a 5 gallon bucket.

I'm guessing that spread of furs at 1:05 was fur looking, fur handling, but not fur sale nor fur trade? LOL

How did mountain men carry all that camp gear around? Or is this indicative of a trading post or other permanent/semi-permanent camp?

That's more like a Rendezvous trappers would sttend, with a suttler's row. Free trappers carrird only what they nee f ed to get through tobthe next rendezvous. A trapper company woukd have an encampment, but this is more like a rendezvous cwhete they'dcsell their furs snd re-equip Fun times. and you get to meet some really neat people. I need to get back into it.

with covid this has stopped to my sorrow but it will be back. not a full rendezvous but a "living history" educational event at Champoeg

@@lelandgilsen9682 my wife passed away in May. She used to tell me I should start re-enacting again, since I had all the gear and "possibles" sitting around. I've been thinking about it, but so many rendezvous have been cancelled or put on hold, because of the covid, it's hard to find them.

    • @lelandgilsen9682

@@tomsmith5216 that is painful. Some events are starting again but few but with new variant may shut things down again. See if you can find locals who do rendezvous and get together as friends. It is important to keep active with friends in your situation. The local clubs can be like a local tribe of support and friendship

Too bad they didn't and couldn't, ignorance is no virtue.
They were too busy running hundreds of buffalo off cliffsides and getting high to understand what immune systems are. And EVEN THEN, they disregarded every aspect of "evil" they supposedly believed in until eventually the people who came to America saw the barbaric lives they lived and tried their very best to allow repeated relocation. Then Indians kept attacking everyday people since they never understood militaries, and the diminishing numbers were pushed even further, this time with violence.
Real civilization came and they suffered identical consequences to the buffalo. Except all we did was arrive on shore with diseases, which strengthened the Indians alive today to our level. They intentionally engaged in mass slaughter not for food, but just because they were too dumb to hunt effectively, even as we arrived with black powder weaponry and showed exactly how it's done

Dumbest comment ever. Many of those old fools are veterans who, when they were young bucks themselves were badasses. That never leaves you as you age. You just get to where dipshits with ignorant comments are easily ignored.
There's your lesson on stupidity. Would you like one on the history of Indian bucks and Mountaineers now?
