Actually, Swiss Miss (a character from 'Turn Off the Dark') has a background cameo in 'Across the Spiderverse'! You can see her silhouette in the super-villian prison.
Watching Howard Stern be so unflinchingly wrong about the meaning of My Hero in front of Dave Grohl-without even a self-conscious bone in his body-makes me feel like I should be a little kinder to myself when I make mistakes
For real, I can’t imagine making a song for a musical, about how anyone can be a hero even if they don’t seem like one, then a guy asks if the songs about your late best friend
The thing that interests me about Rock Reflections is that it’s a period piece. It’s clearly set in the ‘60s like the early comics. The music is ‘60s, the language and slang is ‘60s, it’s just up to its eyeballs in the vibes. I think it could become quite a quaint little production for black box theaters; no fancy webswinging sequences, just a weird nerd from the 1960s crushing on a girl and moving on from the girl dying. While juggling being a superhero.
The concept of "No More" must be catnip to lyricists. Besides "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" and "Into the Woods," "No More" is also a song title in "See What I Wanna See," "tick...tick...BOOM!" and "The Goodbye Girl."
okay I'm only at the start but you point out that spiderman rocks is using holding out for a hero is SO funny to me because that songs composser - the legend that is Jim Steinman - was at the time working on a batman musical inspired by the Burton films. sadly it never got out of development hell, but the demo tracks are so good would recommend giving them a listen
For the longest time I’ve had the vaguest memory of being a little kid and watching some random live spirderman show. I have this strange memory of my family and me talking to the Spider-Man actor after the show the because we were the only ones in the audience. For the longest time I thought maybe I made it up or it was a weird dream or something, but after watching this it hit me! It was Spider-Man Rocks!
I actually wrote a script for Rock Reflections of A Super Hero and it runs to about 50 minutes long. I'm going to try and produce it as a small workshop in my area!
as soon as u finished explaining the video conept i had to rush to the timestamps to make sure the third musical would be rock reflections. i found it ages ago in the depths of fixation and was very obsessed with it. cant wait to hear commentary about that weird little concept album LMAOO
I was lucky (or unlucky) enough to see Turn off the Dark twice as a kid and I loved it so much. Reeve Carney was my first celebrity crush because of his performance. I've come to realize how bad the show was but I still think Boy Falls From the Sky absolutely slaps and would be so good in a musical that had a better plot. ALSO THEY STRAIGHT UP ADDED A NEW MEMBER TO THE SINISTER SIX AND NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THAT
there was another spider-man musical in 1999 at the British theme park Butlins, it was called spider-man on stage, no video footage of it exists but the cast recording did come out on CD
You should definitely look into It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman the musical based on the Superman comics it premiered in the 60s had a cringy 70s tv movie and a off off broadway revival in 2006
Credit where it’s due, those pyro effects in Spider-Man were spot on perfectly timed to Another One Bites the Dust. It’s just about the only praise I’ve got for it other than “the actors sure are giving their all,” but still
You should do a video on Pokemon Live! Ash's mom is played by Dee Roscioli (who played Elphaba on Broadway!), James was played by Andrew Rannells (Elder Price), and the story was so strange it invented an entire ship in the Pokemon fandom (DiamondShipping, Delia x Giovanni). Love the vid! ❤
There's another Spider-Man musical! The Spidey Project was a fanmade musical released in 2012 in reaction to Turn Off The Dark, with a self-described focus on "clear, simple story telling and character driven theater." It... is honestly not very good, but definitely captures some of the tonal whiplash and odd phrasing in old comics, to the point where the finale culminates in the refrain of, "I want Spider-Man inside of me!" Deeply ridiculous show and definitely aware of it. A stage recording is available on this very site! I consider it lacking a little in... heart? Nothing in the show will make you cry but there is this FUCKING KILLER INSTRUMENTAL NUMBER CALLED CHAMELEON

It's so good, and it leaves no doubt that U2 thought they could coast through the songwriting part of creating a musical. I'm sure those guys are in the top 0.01% of living humans in terms of being able to sit down for one day and produce something that can get radio play, but songs in musical theater have to do a lot more than be listenable. Anyway, I think about that book at my work a lot, every time I tell people "before something can be brilliant, it must first be competent.

I looked it up and the Spider-Man rock opera concept album was actually released in 1975, which honestly makes the music genres chosen for the songs make way more sense when you know it came right out of the mid 70s!

The Universal Studios show is probably the best one _as a show._ Personally I like "Turn Off the Dark" just because of how many risks it took. I'll agree "Reflections in Rock" has better music and "sounds more like what I'd expect a Spider Man musical to sound like" if that makes sense... but for how weird and obscure this gem was I really wish it had given more insight into Peter's psyche like the intro promised.
@@ErisIsAnAbomination oh the movie has nothing on the stage musical. some creepy visuals sure but a lot less death. they aren't really "versions" they're completely different stories

A SpongeBob musical mention! And a positive one at that!
