  • Wow, that had to be some of the worst tig welding advice I got coming up with learning in the trade. Whether someone has a natural understanding of tig welding or not isn't a factor, neither does how hard they practice. Let's keep it real here today, grab a coffee and hang with me for a few on today's episode.

Great advise! I struggled so much until a guy who at the time was the number one welder at Raytheon came by my shop because a friend put me in contact with him. I got to watch over his shoulder for a few minutes and he said now its your turn. In just about an inch of weld he told me what I was doing wrong and within a half an hour tig welding aluminum went from very frustrating to I don't like welding steel anymore. I had watched countless videos but I just didn't see what I was doing wrong. Thanks again for your videos I send people to your channel all the time!

I use this sometimes when people say "you're so smart" (I work in IT). "I'm a little bit smart, but with a really good brute force engine".
Also "I didn't find the right way to do it. I just exhausted all the wrong ways to do it..... Quickly"

Dusty, totally agree that a person can learn the skills and become a proficient TIG welder. Not there yet, but still hope to get there. The part you are misunderstanding, I believe, is the artistry, you do some wonderful artwork, some of us don’t have the eye, talent, skill, whatever you want to call it.

My father was a blacksmith/welder, my brother had a old school Tig machine in his garage that he paid for by Welding snowmobile tunnels for racers way back in the 80s. I was always intrigued with Welding and while I could throw a bead and stick a couple pieces of metal together I was never what I call a welder. my son is now a welder, and I envy him. What a great skill to have. At 64. I’m doing what I can do to become proficient. Got myself a TIG machine. And I’m enjoying the journey of learning to tig weld.
There is an old saying, how do you get to Carnegie Hall. One step at a time. It’s kind of relevant in everything we do. I appreciate your videos. They have reduced my steps. Lol.

Yes - you don't see all the bad stuff posted. I'll do that once I've got this stainless exhaust patch ready to go back on the car.
Also - CLEAN - CLEAN - CLEAN - why doesn't my weld look good? Why can't I get a nice pool ? Its not CLEAN is one reason (there were many others!)
I've watched MANY videos about TIG - they all mention start out clean, but only one, in passing, mentioned cleaning between starts and changing your tungsten often even if you don't dip it - the tip dulls - and it picks up dirt as you go. If you start seeing a green tint - time to clean.

I found your channel a couple days ago. As a student of tig welding, I find your content to be very beneficial. I’ve been watching a lot of your content and I appreciate the work you are doing. I greatly appreciate your channel. Most importantly, I appreciate you and your willingness and desire to create this content. You say “I’m not full of talent” maybe that’s true, maybe that’s false but I will say you have an awesome gift of delivering the knowledge you have gained to other people.

That video from that Haji guy (the guy who speaks Japanese or Korean) is helpful for welding thin stainless steel. Basically I've learned heat input is really important, like you'll never get welds looking like this guys if you don't do that. I've been having stainless sheet looking like it just came out of a blacksmith's forge for a while as soon as I introduced filler wire, and learned that unless the steel is thick (3mm or more) you can fusion weld stainless, in fact I think most the stainless welds I seen out there that looks any good are all fusion welded. Pulsing helps but really what you have to do is control heat input, and this means short arc length, like so short that you'd damn near stick if you move even 0.1mm too close. Basically a nice tight arc.
I don't know what this guy uses, or the thickness he's welding, but controlling heat input is always the key. If that means using the cold weld function on the welder, so be it. It's just too bad that my welder doesn't allow pre flow at all for cold welding... no idea who came up with that. Tungsten was exploding simply for the reason that it was striking an arc in air. In normal welding I get 0.1 second of pre flow and this really stopped the exploding tungsten syndrome. But cold welding lets me get silver weld beads, with a slight brown oxide on the other side of the metal.
Obviously pulsing, cold welding aren't going to be used for anything thick, traditional TIG welding works fine there.

As an artist, “talent” is a term that is frustratingly misused. People use the word as a way of minimizing a persons efforts, not recognizing that the “talent” they are observing is not inherent, but is from practice, concentration and focus. What separates the person with “talent” from the average person is their inherent motivation to practice, sometimes visualize, observe and apply.

I wish I had been told all this decades ago; all the courses I took had the goal of getting me to pass and collect my certificate, NOT to turn me into a competent welder.
My advice to anyone setting out to learn TIG would be to sign up for your 2 courses, or, at the very least, to watch all your videos.
You are talented, certainly as a teacher. But you added the word “naturally” during the video, so what you’re saying is that you are living proof that you don’t need to be born with a TIG torch in one hand to become a skilled, talented welder. With the right guidance, anyone can become, at the very least, a highly competent TIG welder.

I got decent at TIG welding pretty quickly, but I doubt I would have or even known what kind of results I was looking for if it weren't for UA-cam. I've learned so much from your videos and a couple other real teachers on here. It helped immensely. I am hoping to finish a couple projects soon so I can make some time to try out your new free programs to develop my skills further. Thank you so much for putting out high quality instruction and advice. I can't imagine how long it would have taken without the knowledge available online.

I completely share your state of mind.
You have to set ambitious and realistic goals that you push a little further each time, and above all, have fun and not be afraid of failure!
I had the chance to participate in the stainless steel welding program, it was great and it allowed me to understand the basics and above all to be able to be independent, I highly recommend this program!
As for dexterity, no miracle, it takes practice :).

With advice that i got from this channel helped me to learn tig welding, My teacher said that he hasnt seen as good bead in years at my line. I did tig welding test where your stainless steel pipe was on 45 degree angle and you needed to work around it (Specialist Vocational Qualification in Building Maintenance Technology) After on-the-job learning next year i will try to do some classes or what ever those were and be qualified pipe welder

The absolutely most difficult thing for me is maintaining torch height. Nothing is more frustrating than dipping the tungsten. Second hardest for me is seeing the puddle. I have a very nice auto dimming helmet yet it is not easy. Lastly, using the peddle while doing all the other stuff is not easy but that is something that gets a bit easier with time. The first two I continue to struggle with.

Nice infomercial for your training classes. This is talking about TIG welding, without teaching anything to help me improve in TIG welding. Anything, but taking your class to learn more. It's great if you can teach TIG, but I hoped to learn something to help me TIG in this video. I do like some of your other videos, this just felt more like a 7:33 advert for your class.
