It's a really well-made video and there are some great tips, but it sounds more like "how to prepare for a marathon race in general" rather than specific tips on preparing for a sub-4.
Very interesting and useful video. You being triathletes, how would you factor cross training in? At the moment, each week I try to swim twice, mostly to improve technique, and functional/strength train twice. Will running 3 times a week be enough? 40 up to 60 km a week?
@Heather, What do you say, I usually run the first half bit slower than my second half. E.g., I'm aiming for an upcoming marathon, the first half around 2-2:06 hours & the second half sub 2 h. I like initially slow and then later moderate to fast to finish the line.
Great video, thank you. I have been training for my first marathon, but got injured at some point and had to postpone it to septembre 2019. My biggest question is on how to adjust the speed during the race. You suggest to follow the timing, I was planning to stick to zone 3, close to zone 4, and now your "basic" watch also has some running power indicator. How can I make my mind on how to adjust the speed during the race? My second question is on training plans. There are a lot of them available, notably in your sponsor site, but they generally do not offer flexibility regarding cross training, for instance going to the swimming pool instead of running once a week. Can I change sport if I still follow the same cardio zone as advised and yet get the expected benefit and hopefully reduce the chances of getting injured?
Hey, thank you for sharing! I’m running my first full marathon on 3 Dec 2023. I am a regular runner with average of 6-10km runs weekly so this should be relevant for my training. Quick clarification… do you mean that 2 full marathon distance during my 12-16 weeks training should be sufficient?
Three weeks late!! hahaha ... I recently did it, on november 18.... 3h51' ... my first sub4. It was harder then I thought, but I´m really glad I could make it! Still, there´s a doubt I have that I hope you can answer: How to avoid, or even minimize the pacing drop after 30th or 35th kilometer? What i meant is, I kept a good 5'10'' pacing until 33th kilometer and I was really confidant that it could drop to something like 5'30'' or maybe 5'45'', but it dropped to almost 6' in the last 9 kilometers, and as the result I finished with a total pace of 5'26''.
For me the 30k mark is psychologically tricking my brain into thinking "10k left" instead of 12km. Yes the last 2 k for me was hell. 3.53 anyway on first try age 56.
Wrong pacing. Adjust slower to finished overall faster. Trial & error during training to find your right pace at current fitness. You want to finish exhausted but strong, not bonked. Good luck.
Last marathon I ran my 5 km splits had a deviation of max 23 seconds....lol no need for positive splits. I highly recommend a snickers bar at 30km. Rocket fuel. Lanzarote again guys?
GTN do great support videos. For the sub 4 marathon, do you guys thing negative splilt is best or would you suggest even split? If negative split, is there a way to work out where I should be at say, every 10k? Should I be at 2hrs at the half way point? If not, by how many minutes either side of 2hrs should I be?
They say to do the majority of your training between 70 to 80% of your maximum heart rate but if I do...I am running slower than the pace that I need to reach my time goal for the marathon.
What about that kind of time after 112 miles on the bike? But I rather ride 5 to 5:15 and run 4:30, Iam 61 now with 3 to 4 yr plan to ride 5 to 5: 15 run 4:15 to 4:30
I always get cramps after the 25th km then I need to walk and run :( It happened in the past 3 Marathons. Doing Manchester this year and praying the lord it doesnt happen again.
It’s okay to be cold at the start of a race but not too cold (hypothermic). Lowering your body’s internal temperature can be a good thing especially for very long distance races like a marathon because your muscles will generate heat while running.
Running videos always frustrate me. I’ve been exercising for 4 years, went from 250 to 180 pounds (113.4 kg to 81.65 kg). I’ve tried running many times before, I had hundreds of miles logged into RunKeeper after two or three years. But this past year, the last 12+ months; I’ve been running consistently. I average over 70 minutes of exercise every single day and I walk about average 18000 steps per day. Running a 10 minute mile is STILL grueling and I just ran a 10K yesterday and almost needed a damn hospital. Why the hell am I so bad at this?!
The key is running at a pace where your heartrate is low. Check out "Zone 2" training. Try doing 90% of your trainingsruns at a pace where you can hold a conversation.

I've got my first Marathon coming up in April and I have no idea what time to aim for. I've been running 1:40 half marathons in training this year with a 1:36pb. My 5k time is 19:36. Any ideas what time I should target in a full or will this just become apparent to me as my longer runs increase in distance?
@@simedinson984 Really? That seems kind of slow, am I really likely to lose that much time in the second half? My Garmin predicts 3:00 which I think is ridiculous but other online calculators predict 3:20 which I still think is too fast. It's so difficult to decide what to aim for, I don't want to sell myself short but I also don't want to bonk on the side of the road!
@@norriaty 3:00 feels fast as fck but i have no idea how you feel after a half one but if you feel fresh somewhere around 3:30-3:45 should be fine i am a bit strange when running as my first half of half marathons are slower than my second half with quite a bit
it's hard to use a training half marathon time to predict your race time. If you are questioning your race strategy, you should probably recalculate your zones a few weeks before the race and run at marathon pace according to the zones (I like the Joe Friel 30min time trial (done in training)). If you were specifically and well trained for the long distance, I'd predict a sub 3:10 going of your 5k pace. If you are planing on making more gains until april, maybe you can get that 3 hour barrier, but that is probably too big of a reach.

Hi there, very nice and helpful video!!! BTW where is this? 👋🏻
Lanzarote, Club La Santa.
That's what I supouse, Canary Islands where I live 🤘🏻😊
I always get cramps after the 25th km then I need to walk and run :( It happened in the past 3 Marathons.
Doing Manchester this year and praying the lord it doesnt happen again.
@chubbyurma I will give that a go.
Thanks!
Thanks Sarah Connor
At 4:17, it is recommended to change shoes every 500km. 🤣🤣🤣 that’s my two lifetimes distance
And i 🥰 marathon.
.
I can't finish in less than 4 hours, but at least I can finish a marathon
This came just to late, but I made it in Brussels ... 3:56:35
Which watch are u using ?
Which person eat breakfast at 5am before a marathon - that is my bedtime. 😅
My next goal is to run a sub-3 hours marathon in an Ironman competition
How to run a sub 4hr marathon
Walk briskly?
"Let me know how it goes in the comments section below" (never comes back) 😂
Hi there! We are still here 😊 We try to read and respond to as many comments as possible. You guys drive this channel and we love getting the chance to interact! How did you get on with your marathon race? 👀
This video would be amazingly better if you could follow KM instead of miles cuz the world measures km mostly.
they should talk also in Kilometers...this miles thing is annoying for basically every country in the world excluding USA
I've got my first Marathon coming up in April and I have no idea what time to aim for. I've been running 1:40 half marathons in training this year with a 1:36pb. My 5k time is 19:36. Any ideas what time I should target in a full or will this just become apparent to me as my longer runs increase in distance?
i would guess you should be fine for under 4 hours but probably not much bellow if below at all
@@simedinson984 Really?
@@sailingintosunshine yea i agree it all depends on how he is trained and how much he will do up to the event
6.55mph
Heather is just drop dead gorgeous........................
What's the location?
Looks like La Santa on Lanzarote
Best sports training place in the world they say. Difficult to argue with....

LisaPet Slow for who? We are all different

Agreed
Ive never really been a runner
I started running in my late 30's and hve run lots of 1/2 marathons but only 5 full marathons
My last one was 4:03 and i was really happy with that
Yes the wheels fell of at around 33k and so no sub 4 hours
I think its quite funny how some people assume that if you cant go sub 4 hours you have no business being out there
After i finished my last mrathon i had other runners consoling me säying things like are you alright and ah so sorry mate what happened
My reaction to that was
Nothing happened i just ran a 20 min marathon pb and im really pleased with that
As you say we are all different
So whats your marathon time Lisa?
