    This has been bugging me for so long and I'm glad someone finally helped confirm my thoughts! If i set my mixed hands "evenly" my left side underhand ends up higher than my right side overhand at lockout and the bar tilts down more into that overhand which also can cause my right hand to lose grip. I actually havent tried it yet, but based on what you said I'm going to slightly widen my right side overhand and im expecting it to feel more even! Will report back!

    have never thought about the thing with the first two fingers taking most the load, so you shuld line those up, but so true

    Sir, you’ve answered one of the great mysteries of the cosmos: to grip a bit of the smooth. Glad to have you back.

    Had this exact question around 9:55 regarding mixed grip and couldn't find anything online. Thanks for addressing! I feel like there's so much individual variability, but also I feel like I'm able to get the bar up evenly even if the grip is slightly off (due to just always having pulled that way)... Was looking into it because only my left hip has flared up since hitting a hitting a heavy single several months back, where I felt nothing during the rep but noticed some helicoptering at the top.

    9:28 and onward really interests me. At lockout I do notice a very minimal lean in to towards my left side (my under hand). And then off the floor there is a very very small shift going into my left side. I pull mixed with just one finger on the smooth

    New studio looks great! Lighting and camera work in your videos are always top-notch.
    I'm a conventional deadlifter and go slightly wider with my underhand than my over since I have a slight valgus angle at the elbow. Mine's not super prnounced, but if I go "even" I get more helicoptering of the bar and it feels uneven coming off the floor.
    I lift with a fair degree of protraction, a little thoracic rounding, and neutral lumbar. You mentioned snatch grip deadlifts, and I have been using them as an extension biased variation. I don't pull from the floor with them, I do them as RDLs, but have noticed a benefit for my overall positioning even though it's the opposite of how I set up for comp lift.

    I’m a conventional lifter but have been trying to get a bit more protracted lately. When I nail it it feels great. But it’s does cause me to reach in and grab the smooth sometimes on my first hand. When I sumo I do notice my grip wants to be more narrow as well. Definitely going to work on getting my mixed grip more even.

  • @aronhegedus
    @aronhegedus Рік тому +2

    Would warn people gripping the smooth that in competition that's where a LOT of talc is, and wirebursh doesn't wipe that off. So make sure you ask your handler to ask to loading team to wash and dry it

    • @BrazosValleyStrength

      I feel the opposite. Chalk on the knurl might be an issue only because it reduces the bite of the knurl. My experience is that some chalk knurl on the smooth actually helps grip a good bit for many people.

    • @aronhegedus
      @aronhegedus Рік тому +1

      @@BrazosValleyStrength I wrote that TALC gets on the smooth bit, because that's what people's thighs contact. If there was chalk on the smooth thats great :D

      Yep you did. My mistake. But I actually haven’t run into that issue but for sure see how it could be there.

    I have trouble with my mix grip in sumo. My overhand when I lock out is higher than my underhand. When i pull from the floor it is much harder because of that. Any idea what I can do?

  • @Kuba-nk8zg

    Just an idea for future videos - accommodating resistance in powerlifting. It would be great to hear your opinion and thoughts on the topic.

    • @BrazosValleyStrength
      @BrazosValleyStrength  Рік тому +8

      I honestly have so little interest in the subject that it would be tough for me to make a video that I really care. I guess my short answer is that outside of managing some pain or movement limitations, I have very very little confidence that any accommodating resistance training is worth doing for powerlifting.

      @@BrazosValleyStrength thanks for prompt and honest answer. I was considering giving it a try but had serious doubts. Knowing your opinion now, I think I will stay with conservative approach and focus on thins that are tested to be effective and known how to manage and program.

    Have you even gotten chest cramps (pecs) when you gripped closer?

    • @BrazosValleyStrength
      @BrazosValleyStrength  Рік тому +4

      Yes and not exclusively with a close grip. For myself, and when I have heard it from others, it is very heavy loads, and noticeably rounded upper backs. I'm not saying anything negative about the rounded upper back, I just think it is part of what is going on here.
      When the arms get pulled VERY far forward, my logic is that the pecs start to aid in stabilization of the upper arm as well. Especially considering the pec minor attaches to the scapula. So to me, it's not really about the pecs getting "squeezed" or something like that from the closer grip, but just that there is kind of a need in general to not let the arms get pulled more than they are in that moment.
