Thank you for this video Hank! I still can't believe that some people think this is just some mythological beast. I did a really huge, carefully researched report on the narwhal when I was in third grade and my teacher politely informed me that I wasn't allowed to report on "made up animals." My mom brought a few books on the subject and it all worked out, but it still astonishes me how little people know about these guys.
In my second year in high school I was once disqualified from a game of word chaining because my classmates AND THE TEACHER didn't know the narwal existed and they accused me of making up animals to win the game.
The tooth you showed at 2:00 is currently being held in Vienna, and was once a prized possession of the Habsburg monarchy, who believed it to be a unicorn horn. Just around the corner from that exhibit there is another Narwhal horn, this one used as part of a heralding stick.
Thanks, Hank, for correcting something I have believed ever since I learned about Narwhals.I always thought they were NOT any type of whale. Live and learn...
I knew some if these facts about marshals before watching this video, and I have had to convince 4 different people that they existed, because lots of people think they're mythical. Now I can show then this video as proof of the narwhal's very real awesomeness.
Hank I was surprised at how you Spelled and pronounced Muktuk as I had always heard it and saw it spelled Muktuk in Alaska. So I thought I would share a little more about this food. Muktuk It is a true traditional Inuit/Eskimo and Chukchi meal of frozen whale skin and blubber. Muktuk is often eaten with seal oil which makes it a very rich dish to those who are not accustomed to eating this wonderful food. Muktuk is most often made from the skin and blubber (fat) of the Bowhead whale, although the Beluga and the Narwhal are also used. Usually eaten raw, it is today occasionally finely diced, breaded, deep fried, and served with soy sauce. It is also sometimes pickled. When chewed raw, the blubber becomes oily, with a nutty taste; if not diced, or at least serrated, the skin is more than a bit rubbery. Muktuk has been found to be a good source of vitamin C, the epidermis containing up to 38 mg per 100 grams (3.5 oz). Blubber is also a source of vitamin D. However, now it also contains PCBs, carcinogens that damage human nervous, immune and reproductive systems, These PCBs originate from industrial sources and are concentrated in the marine food web. Thus poisoning A once nutrients native subsistence food. This word can also be spelled: Ikiilgin, Chukchi Maktaaq (ᒪᒃᑖᖅ), Siglitun, Kivalliq, Aivilik, North Baffin, East Baffin, South Baffin Maktak (ᒪᒃᑕᒃ), Inupiat, Siglitun, North Baffin Maktaq, Inuinnaqtun, Natsilingmiutut (Inuvialuktun) Mattak, Labrador, Greenland Mangtak, Alaskan Yup'ik Mungtuk, Siberian Yupik Kimaq, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq In some dialects, such as Inuinnaqtun, the word Muktuk refers only to the edible parts of the whale's skin and not to the blubber.
I got into a rather heated debate years ago with a friend about the existence of Narwhals. He thought they were a fictional animal that was created for the Futurama (sp?) cartoon show. Seeing a Narwhal in the wild is one of the things I would love to do before I die. :)
All of SciShow is awesome, but as far as pure presentation is concerned this episode is the most professional looking. (by "professional" i mean it came out so perfectly clean but still relatable that I'd swear a lot of people were making a great deal of money off it--keep it up)
I once heard the story, that kings from the North helped spreading the myth, the horn came from unicorns. The kings of course new it came from Narwhales, but the myth added a nice mythological layer, which made the kings more mythological, where they could amaze an audience from far away about these creatures only this king knew where to find ;)
I demand that there be Narwhals that swim majestically through *THE SKY*. They shall be called "Cornaeroceti" (From latin Cornus (Horn), Aer (Air) and Ceti (Whale))
aeradatestudo FLYING SEA TURTLE!!!! ... what? it would have leetle spikes at the bottom of its shell and body slam its enemies, CURSE YOU SEAGULLS EATIN THEIR BABIES!
+Mikanojo I don't think narwhals would actively go around poking their most sensitive organ into things and getting stuck. Seems like poor survival instincts to me. Rather, they'd probably be similar to birds, the biggest nuisance they cause would probably be their defecation.
I got very sad when you said that they couldn't be kept in captivity. I dream of building an aquarium some day since the closest one to where I live requires a passport to get to, and I had hoped to have narwhals. I didn't have a plan B :(
vikings used to hunt narwhals and sell their tusks as unicorn horns and that's why in most depictions of unicorn the horn is swirled like the narwhal's is.
***** It's a rather catchy song that was played a lot when it came out 6 years ago, the narwhals made me think of it (for obvious reasons). Why do you feel the need to call others stupid, when they say things not even directed towards you? I see that your grammar is lacking at best, maybe you're lashing out because others have called you stupid? My comment; how does it make you feel?
Do you not understand what joking is? Neither Trevor nor I are stupid. You are if you don't understand that we are joking. It would be extremely ignorant to have watched this video and still believe that narwhals are a figment of imagination.
People didn't believe the platypus was real either, when it was first discovered and brought back from Australia (stuffed and subsequently dead) they thought it was some prank. Also Hank and I finally pronounce a word the same way! Happy day :D
Could you please please please make a video about pink river dolphins? My sister doesn't believe me, but she didn't believe me about narwhals, either, until I showed her this video. Thanks so much!
+The Cool dude Have you seen how seals move on land? m.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/4bq8fu/how_seals_move_while_on_land/ I wonder how they managed to kill Bin Laden XD
Narwhal horns (or teeth) used to be sold in trade as 'unicorn horns' in some parts of europe and are a lot of what we based unicorn horn designs on in myth. The striking resemblance(which turns out to be an obvious resemblance) is why some people assume that Narwhals too, are mythical.
I think the reason why narwhals can't be kept in captivity because they are so sensitive to the environment, like if the temperature dropped a tiny bit too low, or the salinity was too high. I think this is the reason why the face-tooth-horn thingy developed, as it helped them determine their surroundings.
I just remembered... The question is: the evolution of Earth and it's species aside... Are dragons possible? If so, how would they fly, how would they breathe fire, and if they can have those wings in addition to 4 legs?
There's a reaallyy good fake documentary about just that :D Seriously, it's fuckin' awesome, you sometimes forget that it isn't for real :P It's called The last Dragon: A fantasy made real if you're interested ^^
Belal DarkneSS Sadly there are a few things that won't work with your theory :c No animal or reptile has ever had nor will(probably) ever have 6 limbs, it uses to much energy and takes too much space to be effective. We are all made up of a large amount of water and your dragon would just selfcombust if it had that stuff inside it. Sorry to break it to you dude :/ Nice thinking though ^^
Belal DarkneSS Insects are not in the animal kingdom, no. But that's the thing, there are only either 4 or no legged reptilians :/ Again, 6 limbs would just be a burden as the creature would have to provide energy for 2 extra limbs while at the same time making them heavier and less mobile, it's just not practical. Yes there are definitely ways to make the whole fire thing work(what was mentioned in the video, both the bug and the platinum thing sounds reasonable) but Adamantium is not actually a thing, marvel made it up in 1969 :P I totally agree that Dragons wouldn't be that impossible with manipulation :D
LordZeebee Just in case somebody cares, insects are in the animal kingdom. They are from the Arthropod Phylum opposed to the Chordate phylum that reptiles, mammals, birds ect. belong to. Dragons of mythology are likely chordates if they existed or will exist.
No normal reptile or mammal have more than 4 limb buds (from which a limb or a wing develop). Scientists can make the hox genes express in wrong place so that the animal can have limb buds grown from where it wouldn't normally be, but in that case it will cause serious developmental problems. Normal dragons of mythology seems to be reptile-like animals with six limbs if their wings are "limb wings" like those of birds and pterodactyls. In this sense it is not very likely to occur, since no reptile have more than 4 limbs. However, just in case you're interested, some species from the genus Draco, often referred as flying lizards or flying dragons, have wing membranes attached to extended rib bones, and not connected with limbs, so in some sense they can be considered as non-limb wings. Only that flying lizards don't really fly, they glide.
@2:10 I half expected to see a crude drawing of a narwhal wearing a labcoat. Also, as I understand it, the Narwhal tooth may have been the inspiration behind medieval accounts of unicorns.
Anyone else thinking of, narwhals narwhals swimming in the ocean causing a commotion because there so awesome, they'll win a polar bear in a fight. Sorry I needed too do this.
Belugas and orcas actually do terribly in captivity. Their health suffers, their lifespans are demonstratively shorter than in the wild, and they exhibit signs of stress like no tomorrow.
For too long has the narwhal been stripped of its dignity, rolled in the batters of oppression, and deep fried in the hot oil of shame. Thank you Mr. Green for your kind words.
What do you mean that Unicorns are mythical and aren't real? I had some just yesterday. It kinda tastes like beef but also like candy. But let's not get crazy, It is an acquired taste, so it's not for everyone.
Hi hank ! First of all thanks for your show ! I've learned a tremendous amount of things thanks to you (and your brother) and hope to continue to do so. One thing I don't seem to be able to find is what are particles gradient. Could you explain or provide a link ? Being French in having a hard time team ng Google to my will on this one...
I'm really late, but for anyone looking, I got "the relative concentration of various particles at varying depths". Uhhmm in simpler terms Google is less likely to mess up (it's a bit better 9 years later), it's thought to be that the salt in the ocean and the salt in their prey are at different levels and the difference helps tell which is which.
If the tusk is just a sensory organ, why would only males have it? Since it is used for more than one specialized task, why wouldn't it be present in the entire population?
Think about it- male whales often wander around by themselves, but females almost always swim in pods. So only one member of the group (about 15 percent of the females also have tusks, and males sometimes join pods) needs to have a tusk to warn the others about a storm or the ice starting to freeze or whatever.
And yes, you are absolutely correct in that many unique structures seem to be specifically for attracting mates. However, it could be argued that the ability to grow and keep these structures is afforded by "better" health than others which would be a marker of fitness (the ability to utilize the structure to confer a health advantage OR maintain health in spite of a DISadvantage like the peacocks tail). Generally, fitness underlies all selection.
A long time ago people used to think narwhal horns where unicorn horns and would cut them off and drink from them in hopes of gaining immortality. Or so I've heard.
There's a transitive property of unicorns, people know that unicorns are a myth so they think that narwhals are also mythological since the origin of the legend of the unicorn is actually derived from the narwhal. More Here: phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/03/18/the-mystery-of-the-sea-unicorn/
They've been known to be dentists as well; when a narwhal breaks it's tusk fleeing from Orca's another narwhal will insert it's tusk into the hole and break off their tip (it's solid at the end) thus plugging the hole! insider.si.edu/2012/04/for-dentist-the-narwhals-smile-is-a-mystery-of-evolution/
lol interesting... funny how most of their teeth are obsolete... maybe they have grown a liking to swallowed fish twitching/swimming in their stomachs...
I'm reading spice and wolf and just made it to the part where the church and the local officials are fighting over a Narwhal because its horn was believed to have healing properties when grounded up and consumed
Another interesting V-Blog. As a child I was taught that the tusk was used to stir up bottom muck "looking" for mussels and bottom hiding flatfish. As far as sexual dimorphism goes, size is not the only determinant; color, shape, and-yes-diet, can all be factors in difference of appearance between the genders. Teeth, also, especially in strap-tooth whales, are a useful way of "sexing" stranded, or washed up, whales. Ultimately, however, "form defies function", as I am fond of saying. Hehe.
Do something on the science of the movie Blackfish- the effects of large wild animals in enclosures, the pros and cons of it, and whether or not it is considered humane
Thanks for Keeping Narwhals Real! Lots of people actually don't believe that they exist (some sort of transitive property of the unicorn I think). Check out our documentary film on narwhals here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/ianqrowan/the-narwhals-wake-feature-documentary-film
it's this thing where you can pay to watch the videos, or something like that. basically giving them money out of the goodness of your heart because they're making youtube videos for us and you know everyone's gotta pay the bills somehow
I remember having to do a fact poster about narwhals in like 3rd grade. Yeah, my mind was fucking blown and you damn well know I had the coolest animal in that class!
Also on Narwhals: I've read & seen that the flesh of narwhals is were Inuit peoples get their vitamin C. So apparently, as well as hazelnut, they can also taste a bit like oranges... Check clips of "the human-planet" "capturing-a-narwhal" :)
I'd heard of them a few times through my life, but never in science or textbooks. Only things like the movie elf, and this multicolored narwhal hat that my friend had. I just assumed until I was 21 that they were mythological, as did many others. Some people are shocked that people don't know this but narwhals aren't exactly part of most schools curriculums and they're illusive enough that they're rarely talked about.
Thank you for this video Hank! I still can't believe that some people think this is just some mythological beast. I did a really huge, carefully researched report on the narwhal when I was in third grade and my teacher politely informed me that I wasn't allowed to report on "made up animals." Naomi Bousson that sucked :(( but oh well at least you're smarter than them !!
like what the hell? do you live in ohio or something?
No, I live near Brussels, Belgium.
Naomi Bousson is there many narwhals in Belgium?
Naomi Bousson Oddly, narwhals were a meme in my high school, but the school was in a landlocked state (Iowa) in the US
Wait... people didn't know Narwhals existed?
lol!

Hank I was surprised at how you Spelled and pronounced Muktuk as I had always heard it and saw it spelled Muktuk in Alaska. So I thought I would share a little more about this food.
Muktuk
It is a true traditional Inuit/Eskimo and Chukchi meal of frozen whale skin and blubber.
Muktuk is often eaten with seal oil which makes it a very rich dish to those who are not accustomed to eating this wonderful food.
Muktuk is most often made from the skin and blubber (fat) of the Bowhead whale,
although the Beluga and the Narwhal are also used.
This word can also be spelled:

Tynan Sigg Females don't hunt don't need the extra .
Think about it- male whales often wander around by themselves, but females almost always swim in pods. So only one member of the group (about 15 percent of the females also have tusks, and males sometimes join pods) needs to have a tusk to warn the others about a storm or the ice starting to freeze or whatever.
Narwhals ask if having great upper body strength is so good, why don't both male and female humans have it?
that's probably the best question I've seen asked on youtube
Narwhals narwhals swimming in the ocean causing a commotion cause they are so awesome
Narwhals they are narwhals, narwhals, just don't let them touch your balls.
Generally, fitness underlies all selection.
you mean sea unicorn
Narwhals, Narwhals, swimming in the ocean. Causing a commotion, because they are so awesome
Narwhals! Narwhals! Swimming in the ocean, causing a commotion, because they are so awesome!
Nahwals! Narwhals!

Jonny Ly swiming in the ocean causing a commotion cuzthey are so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whales and dolphins do NOT do fine when kept in "big" tanks.
I do agree that they shouldn't be kept in tanks but what I think he meant by it is whales and dolphins can survive in tanks and narwhals can't
A long time ago people used to think narwhal horns where unicorn horns and would cut them off and drink from them in hopes of gaining immortality. Or so I've heard.
wait, why didn't people think narwhals are real?
people are stupid?
That was me when I was younger. I didn't think it made sense.
+Annabella_Assassins I only found out flying squirrels were real last year. XD
There's a transitive property of unicorns, people know that unicorns are a myth so they think that narwhals are also mythological since the origin of the legend of the unicorn is actually derived from the narwhal.

Because unicorns are not real, therefore, a sea unicorn must also be a lie. I'm just glad that they are REAL!
hey Hank, could you do an episode talking about Physical and Chemical properties and reactions?
PROOF THAT UNICORNS ARE REAL! they just went extinct last ice age...
hahaha that cartoon at 1:20 is hilarious well done
They must get horrible tooth ache...

Pretty cool stuff.
There real?!?!! What's next, People thinking skeletons are real?...
What?! Skeletons are real???!!!!!1111
insertrandomcleverusername Skeletons (as in monsters) are not real, but yesssss everybody has a skeleton on the inside of their body
Red Pyro OMG Seriously!!You thought that narwhals are not real?
Olga VysotskyRed Pyro (skorgefan) Sorry if that was mean.
***** shiver down your spine
Narwhal biologists, however, are purely the stuff of legends.
Who in God's name though narwhals weren't real?
that's what I was thinking
Super carlin bros
my sister
I feel bad for you.
I posted this video to her wall on facebook
You could do a couple special videos about the science behind particular sci-fi shows or movies. Like the Star Trek holodeck.
Well, there are people who believe god is real.
apinakapinastorba and there are people who think nothing has exploded.(in the way that there was nothing and that exploded)
apinakapinastorba there are also people who think that the universe formed last thursday
Ze Core Gamer I cannot believe that.
Ze Core Gamer but if it formed last thursday, would we know?
gerjan alons And what if it is Thursday? Does the universe form today of week ago? And why earth weeks?
I'm reading spice and wolf and just made it to the part where the church and the local officials are fighting over a Narwhal because its horn was believed to have healing properties when grounded up and consumed
Narwhals have been known to cause quite a commotion.
Cause they are so awesome.
Interesting fact: "Monoceros" in Greek actualy translates to "Unicorn" :)
Hehe.
I literally knew someone who didn't know they were real until we were in college
do more lists of cool animals like the giant river otter, the kokapo, the hooded seal, and the dugong
Do something on the science of the movie Blackfish- the effects of large wild animals in enclosures, the pros and cons of it, and whether or not it is considered humane
I'm here, being a Narwhal Nerd, in my narwhal pajamas, snuggling my narwhal stuffed animals, watching narwhal videos. I might be crazy.
Hank, I love you and your cool fact about EVERYTHING!!
Os nordicks use to sell their tusks as unicorn horn.
Serious points for using the term 'Inuit' and not 'eskimo' (like Jeopardy did tonight)
When I was in middle school, I tried telling a classmate about Narwhals and they told me they were not real. I knew they were, but now jokes on them!
"Bye buddy hope you find your dad" thank you Mr. narwhal
I like it. Makes sense to me so I'll go with that for now, well done.
I did not any of these things about Narwhales, so awesome :D
