  • Bayle continues a long line of DLC dragon bosses, but definitely put one of the most unique spins on the position, especially with Igon's desperate vendetta against him capturing the hearts of many players just on the strength of his voice acting.

Igon's unique one-legged model is technically treated as a type of Musculature in the character creation menu. Naturally he only uses it on the versions of him you meet out in the overworld, and his actual summon uses the standard Musculature instead.

On a side note, in Jagged peak we can find an interesting crafting material - dragon’s calorbloom. It description says “single flower is said to blossom-only once-from the hearts of dead warriors who often partook of the Dragon Communion.”
One can easily notice that Bayle’s arena is dotted with said flower marking those numerous dragon warriors who fought Bayle and failed.

Another interesting thing to note is there are supposedly hundreds to thousands of Dragon's Calorbloom in his arena which suggests that, through millenia, legions of Drake Warriors have attempted to hunt down the Dread, only to become prey themselves. Bayle is wild. He took on an Elden Lord and lived to tell the tale for ages. He saw multiple civilizations rise and crumble to dust (including our own). He survived despite the divine edict set by Placidusax to exterminate Bayle and his kin over eons. It took a God Slaying tarnished to finally put him down, and he still dies defiant. Even if you consume his heart, he will take over your soul.

    - Bayle uses flame lightning, which parallels the ice lighting of the dragonkin.

Bayle's lightning wings actually have a unique appearance compared to every other dragons' wings (even Bayle's own physical ones), but it's still an awesome idea. Something I would like to add, Igon and Bayle might share even more traits beside their missing legs. And I'm not referring to their similarly ambitious personalities, as described by the priestess of dragon communion.
During one of his "pain-monologues", Igon describes not just his leg but his arms too "lying in ruin". If we now take him handing us his furled finger as him actually carrying around a severed finger of his, then it seems quite plausable that his hands are "not in great shape" inside his gloves, this would coincide with Bayle's shredded arms/wings (and makes me wonder if he could've still used his bow).
The second, more speculative similarity is based on Bayle's theme.
Igon has these moments where he turns from his usual bombastic, vengeful persona into this broken, fear- and regretful one. I think the somber sections in Bayle's ost might be meant to imply a similar state of mind, where he too regrets what he did. Though whether that would be because of his wounds having ended his ambitions, the persecution of the drakes following his attack or something else, would be impossible to say.

@valeriob36 The funny thing is i have a comeplelty false theory that's more to make me smile, but here it is, igon is all of bayles' doubts, insecurities, and ither qualitys he threw out given form, igon is quiet litteraly bayle in another form but with a different set of memoires as well, this is why i think bayle hates bayle just as much as igon hates bayle but at the same time doesnt want igon to die, perhaps placidusax never learned of this but if he did i would imagine he pretty upset to learn the cause which in this stupid theory is that bayle felt like a failed dragon, he had a heart and so was by all means not a true dragon like them and these feelings constantly welled up inside him and so one day he casted them aside which in return left only the monster we now see, bayle in this light can be considered incomplete, igon his other half is the only thing really capable of killing him and when bayle dies so does igon as both need each other

I personally really like this theory because it kinda gave me a general concept of how the Elden Ring Universe might function. Dragon Communion is basically using the Dragon's power by devouring their hearts, and since Flying Dragons are kin to Bayle, an agent to the Formless Mother, Dragon Communion incantations' main attribute is Arcane, just like Blood incantations. This would also explain why Placidusax's Ruin, despite being similar to a Dragon Communion incantation, doesn't require Aracne; basically Placidusax is aligned with the Greater Will and has no ties with the Formless Mother.

Plus Bayle never uses anything like blood flame.
Lastly, if you connect Dragon Communion with FM by stat requirements, we can say that Gurranq is an agent of the Rot because his incantations use faith like Rot incantations do.

Blood-flame may be something specific to Mohg, as bloody AoW's do not produce flames yet are aligned with and used by bloody-fingers, while only the incants create blood-flame.

I'm pretty sure Bayle ate some of his descendants (I'd imagine he'd need a bunch, since the stronger communion spells need multiple hearts) and/or some of the ancient dragons he killed so that he could, but for a moment, regain some of what he lost to Placidusax.

As someone who overall didn’t find a lot of the DLC actually that enjoyable, this was a big highlight for me. I was expecting just another dragon fight that would bore me to tears, but I ended up with a unique design and an unmatched hype man.
I had Bayle at near death so I committed to trying to land a big Wing Stance stab to hopefully finish him off, but while the blow landed, I was completely out of stamina as he reared up and roared, preparing to possibly annihilate me.
But from behind me, I hear him. Igon’s roar of battle as he let loose one more harpoon directly into Bayle’s screaming maw, leading to the miraculous sound of a stance break. Two bottles of soju in that night, I was on the verge of tears regarding how insane that timing was. I finish the fight, and saw my warrior off, howling into the night alongside him at the death of the tyrant.
Bless your heart, Igon. May we all be so lucky to find a friend to cut down our white whales.

I redid the fight over and over until I could win it with Igon surviving. I know he was but a spirit, but I felt he couldn't rest properly until he saw Bayle defeated. [I guess I kinda hoped I'd get his spirit ashes to summon later, too, but I will settle for the gear; the gauntlets are very good for their weight.]

they were like 8oz bottles of soju!! i’m small!! i just like to party!! i don’t drink that often it’s expensive!!!
i have criticisms about the DLC involving from’s general boss design being fairly samey (5-6 hit chains that afford minimal retaliatory windows, generally high lethality that seems to implicitly discourage learning a moveset in what i would consider a normal amount of time, predictable 100% of the time that the boss will have a second phase install at 65% HP with hilarious AOE attacks, you die and they say the line every time, rollcatching wink wink nudge nudge moves that seem to say “isn’t this so soulsborne”, etc etc)
the final boss i was mostly ok with, although i had some complaints there with how much of a visual flashbang catastrophe they are to look at. idk man
i think Elden Ring is a weird game because i really feel like i should love it, but i only kind of like it! it’s disappointing in the face of AC6, which is a tight and explosive experience rather than a fun exploration title stretched too thin to then require recycling of assets and pushing the envelope too far of how to stretch a dark souls character rolling. thank you for listening to my ted talk

bayle isnt exactly evil actually. What exactly did he do that was "evil"? If anyone is, its placi, who essentially propogandized his way into forming a religion dedicated to the genocide of the people who used to work with bayle and even the kids who dont know who bayle is.

  • @gluelake

I agree the the last sentiment so much. Before SotE I was wondering if they would add another big dragon boss, 'cause we already had Placi and many others. Honestly, I hope they will make an Eastern dragon as an actual fight instead of gimmick like Divine Dragon.

While I love the story of Bayle, i can't help but wonder why he betrayed Placidusax, maybe it was a lust for power, or it could be much deeper and i think about this because of his design.
-he doesn't have the rhino horn on him like the other modern dragon's, instead his skull structure looks more close to the ancient dragons
-he doesn't have any feathers or hairs like the other modern dragon's (likely because they we're burned of, but I'd feel like their still would be some on the tail)
-his horns have a unique structure from both the modern and ancient dragons, having his horns curved like that of goats compared to the smooth structure form the other dragons
-and his scale's look much harder compared to the modern dragon's, they almost look like the scales of the magma wyrm's and ancient dragons
Bayle seems to be the last kind of a lost species of dragons, while their is no direct evidence of this, i have the feeling this could have support the reason for his betrayal.

Thank you for pointing out the direct comparison that is Cpt Ahab and Moby Dick with Igon and Bayle (It even sounds like Whale)
I love Igon to bits, but his whole schtick is basically just the story of Moby Dick inserted into Elden Ring. I love that about it personally, and I don't see the credit given anywhere near often enough. Even some of Igon's voice lines are directly from Cpt Ahab.

Bayle's name is (in all likelihood) also a reference to George R. R. Martin's books. There's a dragon called "Balerion, the Black Dread" in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. "Bayle, the Dread" is basically an abridged version of that.

It's likely Bayle took all 3 of them, but those two are the only ones that remain while the 3rd one was disintegrated or lost somewhere. (In my headcanon, Bayle sneak attacked Placi, taking off one head. Then in the battle that followed, he managed to take two more)
Crack-pot theory : Bayle ate the 3rd head, which is why he can use flame-lightning

The Old Lord Talisman clearly depicts Placidusax with only four heads. I'm not fully convinced the fifth head was real to begin with, but if it is, it was likely lost sometime before the talisman was made, and therefore before Bayle's attack.

I've always suspected that Bayle was the aggressor and Placidusax was the defender. It makes more sense when we are told that Bayle challenged the Dragonlord and there are item descriptions that claim in the prehistoric age the ancient dragons defended their lord as walls of living rock.

Crazy that Placi was the one behind dragon communion, especially when you consider all those dragon communion warriors in version 1.00 of Elden Ring situated in Leyndell, or that we have several dragon communion warriors regarded as Erdtree champions (such as Theodorix), technically you cannot consume the heart of ancient dragons, but I always assumed it was because it’s harder to evoke the power of ancient dragons compared to modern ones, but nope, guess Placi allied with the Erdtree just like Fortis in order to eliminate Bayle.
    No REAL lightning breath though
