I hate when companies or mod hosting websites clamp down on mods. Mods are unofficial and optional, therefor the only people that are affected by them are those who choose to download them. As long the mod doesn't contain any malicious code or something illegal (e.g. someone's social security number or the recipe for crystal meth), it should be allowed. No exceptions. When companies play the moral arbiter and start banning certain types of mods for whatever reason, it stifles freedom of creativity.
I mean, I kind of get it? Mods are definitely in something of a legal gray area. If I spent time and money developing a game, personally I would absolutely love for people to make modifications to it and make all sorts of changes to the game. Modding has always been one of my favorite parts of PC gaming. However, I would not be very happy if people started using the fact that I allow mods to make modifications that I do not like or that go against my beliefs- ie something like a mod that adds pornography or lets you murder children. It 100% should be within the rights of the owner of the game being modified to dictate what is and is not allowed to be done to their game. The problem in this case is that Mojang DOES allow modification (a good thing), they DO generally provide guidelines for what they do and do not want to see done with their game (also a good thing), HOWEVER they are not always clear about what's allowed or not (a bad thing) and they do not uniformly enforce their rules (also a bad thing). It's also not fair to say that the only people affected are those who choose to download them. Someone doing something bad with your product can very well lead to bad press, and it's happened in the past.
Maybe while they're at it, they can restore the accounts of players banned by the godawful chat reporting added *a decade after the game launched,* as well as people who didn't migrate their accounts.

Minecraft is a game with cartoonish violence baked into its identity, for better or for worse. It's not economically sensible for them to winnow their demographic down to children rather than seeking to embrace their entire playerbase.

I don't even think banning firearms specifically is the root problem here. I don't believe Mojang should have the *legal* right to moderate third person content in *any form whatsoever*. I don't care if it "hurts their brand". They don't get to decide what people do with their own copy of the game.

Exactly.
Yet they allow shitty overpriced “addons” and “worlds” in the marketplace, buggy messes that may or may not work for whatever reason.
@@definitely_just_floating someone should sneak a backdoor into a marketplace mod that lets them disable the marketplace for that user

Minecraft is a game with cartoonish violence baked into its identity, for better or for worse. It's not economically sensible for them to winnow their demographic down to children rather than seeking to embrace their entire playerbase.

Ok, trying to compare the legality of lootboxes to straight gambling is a bit murky for one simple reason: no matter what, loot boxes WILL give you something. I don’t know how lawmakers tend to see this issue, but I have a feeling this is what the defense will be. It’s also this justification that lets all gacha games exist as they function with similar rules. Same goes for things like card packs, heck that’s why Pokemon TCG pocket even exists. I’m afraid if they’re forced to rule one way or the other, a lot of other things will get hit by the blowback.
Depending on the country lootboxes can be considered gambling. Belgium is one such example
Do you really think it will always give you something
