My AK is 0.7 mm and my VK is 4mm. I think I'll stop there. You make me laugh Dave, I hear you as clear as a bell, thank you for making me smile, I love your channel
You can make a video compassion all 14x6,5" brass shell, with die cast hoops, remo ambassador, same tunning of: A- Standard flanged shell B- dunnet straight shell C- 2mm shell D- 3mm shell E- 5mm shell That's would be really awesome, to hear them side by side!
I noticed when playing live that a thinner metal shell snare tends to lose a lot of body in the mix while a thicker shell not only cuts, but still sounds full.
Dave I have to confess I am also a thickness snob and have been since the late 80's when Sonor brought out their cast bell bronze snare drums. I still a prototype piccolo that weighs in at a ridiculous19lbs!
I sold my dw collectors brass and am now looking at buying another. Bought a starphonic brass, which is fantastic - but you're right..there's nothing like playing a thicker shelled snare. Annoyingly the price of the dw is now £400 more..not that I think it will stop me..
Hey Dave, dig the video! Would love to hear your thoughts on this same topic, but on toms/kick. For instance; Your Tama Granstar vs your first generation Starclassic maple etc I'm intrigued as to whether you notice a difference in; hearing it behind/in front of the kit, front of house mix, recording mix, the general feel under the stick. All info would be greatly appreciated! Hope you're well Dave. Cheers!
We go through phases Dave. At some point you’ll decide that those thick shells are too stiff, and don’t allow the shells to really breathe and vibrate like a thinner shell does. I bounce back and forth between moods and preferences. Wood one day, metal the next.
good stuff dave. have you tried the 3mm gretsch solid aluminum? I picked up a 6.5 from dcp and its absolutely my favorite drum that I'll never part with. cheers
I haven't, mainly because I have a couple of thick shell aluminium drums already. That said, they have intrigued me for a while and I'd love to have a good look at them.
Sorry for the delay. I think it would dry out the sound and maybe give it a little more focus. Probably change the feel a little too I would imagine. Hope that helps.
Right now I only have diecast hoop snobbery. My next snare will be the Gretch Solid Steel. I’m easing myself into the heavy solid shell snare segment but I also doesn’t see any reason to buy anymore normal rolled and welded metal snares. I really want a Savage Custom cast bronze shell made with a set of matching hoops.
@@DaveBatemansShed I like the Phosphor Bronze from Gretch the best but the Solid Steel will have to do. I'm ordering all the Bubinga drums I need from Tama this year while they will still make them so no room for more snares for a while. I already bought 3 this year when I said no snares this year. I ordered 2 drums and 2 hoops and I still need 2 more drums. The Bubinga Elite prices are like a punch in the gut. I could EASILY get a bell brass snare from any company for the amount of $$$$ Tama wants.

It's that exact reason I've been using the thicker shelled drums outside for at least ten years now.

Always loved the look of those Sonor drums.

I think the feel is a big part of why the original Tama BB is so popular and highly regarded; the feel of that thicker shell just can't be replicated.
I've got a 6mm Drumcraft cast bronze Dave. Absolutely incredible drum!
Nice!

That's an interesting one, let me think about it!
Great post my friend. I know exactly how you feel! A+
Thanks!
We go through phases Dave. At some point you’ll decide that those thick shells are too stiff, and don’t allow the shells to really breathe and vibrate like a thinner shell does. I bounce back and forth between moods and preferences. Wood one day, metal the next.
That's why I ended up with so many drums

nice 1 dave, know exactly what you mean, i'm only up to 3mm brass at the moment
5mm on the horizon !
Excellent!
Dave, I have this also.. was wondering, how d'you think a set of diecast hoops on the batter side on a dw collectors brass would sound?

The Savage stuff looks like great drums, as do the Gretsch

Drugs and snare drums.....💊🥁 that’s why. 🥶
This is where I am 3 of 4 of my shells are thick stave or cast. The ply shell is a Delite.
I'm still not sure what I prefer sometimes.
I never like thick shell. I don't know, I don't care about thickness before, but the drum I hate are mostly thick shell drum
I think thick and thin shells have their place and time. Depends on what you want or need really.
I'm currently going through this now :-/
Glad I'm not the only one
mil and mm are different things
1 mil = a thousandth of an inch
1 mm is approximately 39 mil
