Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer... Comedy drama that shines a light on the day-to-day life of a family looking after their severely learning disabled girl, Rosie.
Rosie starts to say the word mama, raising hopes that her communication will finally take off. Feeling totally outshone by Rosie’s amazing school teacher Abigail, Em concentrates on trying to develop Rosie’s sign language. Meanwhile, Si starts to worry that the other parents of children with special needs at the school look down on him. Both situations come to a head at Rosie’s school sports day.
Back in 2007, Rosie has her first full evaluation and Si and Em are told that she has an IQ of 47. In the doctor’s view, it is unlikely this will change as she gets older. Si and Em find it hard to talk to each other, the relationship drifting apart as Si retreats into his backyard to smoke and drink alone, and Em taking solace in the company of Ben.

This made me cry. It’s so difficult for autistic kids and their parents. I briefly worked in a specialised school for autistic children (during my teacher training days), and those teachers were some of the most inspirational I have seen in my life. The amount of effort that went into creating resources and structuring the classroom and day in a way that would help the children keep calm and engage in various activities was amazing.
How about for the poor siblings. They are often either ignored or expected to behave perfectly as parents are already struggling to cope. They are often carers not by choice but by circumstance. They have needs that deserve to be met as well.
Fyi she isn’t autistic she just has autistic traits due to her condition
The character isn't autistic
this randomly came up in my recommended, and i just started crying when i finished it. my younger brother is autistic and non verbal so he can't communicate with us well, often with screams and crying. if we ever took him to the library i think it'd be a disaster lol. regardless, this video really hit home because i remember the first time he said my mum's name too, and she was over the moon. thank you for posting this
Autistism 😎
@@Alwayslazyy oh? haha
I'm autistic
@Time4Truth no lmao. me and my older brother got vaccinated but my younger brother didnt, he still got autism
he got vaccinated after he got diagnosed tho so at a much later age
I just realised that the actress who plays Emily also played Joan Redfern in Human Nature/The Family of Blood. In which David Tennant's doctor (as John Smith) falls in love with Joan. And then in this there characters are married. It's almost like an alternate timeline where they stay together but in the 21st century. Brilliant
So you're saying i'm autistic because i'm part timelord? COOL!
They've actually worked together A LOT
You mean the nasty racist poc who was horrible to Martha?
@@halofanatiks This is brilliant. Imma tell this to my colleagues 🤣 OUR KIDS ARE HALF TIME LORD!
I felt like crying when I heard her voice because it's so adorable
Is it just me or is David Tennant rocking the Jürgen Klopp look lol. Seriously though, haven’t watched the series yet but really have to give credit to the team for bringing more awareness to learning disabilities. I’ve heard nothing but really positive things about the series.
Is this a parallel universe where John Smith never opened the fob watch?
I think so.
Lol thought the same thing
Lmaooo
Lol!
He's been weeping angeled.
A child's first word. I work with special needs children, a child's first word always makes my day. I remember the first child i worked with, we taught her sign language as we weren't even sure she could hear (was having appointments with an audiologist but no reaction to sound or noise). One day, in the middle of a meltdown, she went quiet and suddenly, VERY LOUDLY said PASta. The poor girl was just hungry and did not know how to say it... We were so SO happy, we gave her... A bit too much pasta 🤣 Shes at an inclusive school now, still a foodie 🥰
Oh, that young girl just made her day😂♥️
Please tell me that there’s Doctor Who fans here? If there is please tell me if you notice what I’m noticing 😂😂😂
She was married to him when he lost his doctorwhoness
@@yesitsmeguru She wasn't married to him in doctor who
I first thought you mean David and thought "well thats kinda obvious, isn't it?" and then i realized my stupidity, thx for pointing it out. Makes this 100 times better for me.
@@yesitsmeguru Nah he only had a fantasy where they would be married.
Family of blood right?
She looks alot like my younger sister..my younger sister is exactly like her and my family used to watch this show alot but we no longer do as it just reminds us how difficult it is dealing with my sister, for other young careers out there, don't give up❤️
The Actress who plays Rosie Is very talented
I know how this is because I once had to look after 2 people with disabilities and let me tell you it takes patience and understanding but it's worth it in the end.
I love David.
Hes one of the best Dr Who's ever.
@@MichaelM28 at least we can both agree he's miles better than Jodie Whittaker.
This has been my exact experience with my son.
Hey that's the Barty Crouch Jr.
Rose (Tyler) is the doctor's daughter! 😂
Way better than the Sia movie.
Such a good show! My heart hurts every episode.

How can I watch this show? I'm in Canada.
Not sure what the point of that vid was.
Please name of the show!!
It is time people move away from "he's The Dr".
Yes that was one part he played, but he has done so many other things, played so many different characters, and become those characters.
It is rather disrespectful to just refer to David Tennant as The Dr from Dr Who, and say that in everything he does he is The Dr taking on those roles.
although now is a funny time to say that since he’s reprising the role
What this called ?
A psa ??

BBC big black co i dont need to say mre
second. PERIODT
Wanna be friends
She does it on purpose because she gets away with it
Actually, she doesn't. Rosie has a rare chromosomal condition which makes her autistic and non verbal. She is based on the writer's kid who has the same condition and his experiences.
Not at all. SOme of these children are just like this, my 4 yo daughter is exactly the same - autistic, non verbal and is a bit of a whirling dervish.
@@rosering02No point trying to educate people like this. It's pretty clear when someone's being abelist versus just plain ignorant/misinformed.
She's like 8 now come on
Stop the marketing bullshit and show this on streaming devices across the world. Otherwise we will pirate the eps and you get nothing. New world new order new way of thinking. Seriously.
This is what bad parenting and lack of discipline does. Yes i understand that there is a disability here, but there would also need to be an understanding of the consequences of her actions and in this scene it's clear she has never had any consequences to her misbehaving.
Wrong
She's literally being scolded like 10 times
This is misleading special needs
You’ve never heard of non-verbal autistics?
@@jakeoliver9167 My brother has autism and he goes to a special need boarding school so i have met a whole spectrum of needs and none i've seen behave like this in public
Not at all. My daughter is exactly the same - non verbal autistic. I can see a lot of her in this character and I haven't even watched the show yet, but I'm going to.
How? When you've met one person w special needs/learning disabled person, you've met *one* of them. They're just as different as skin and hair colour can be apart from sometimes sharing some traits.
The show is based on the writers experienced with their own severely learning disabled child, I think they know what they're talking about.
No it isn’t.. this is a real life story written by the father of the girl known in the show as ‘Rosie’. It is literally Rosie’s story. If you think it’s misleading, watch the final episode where you see the real girl. She isn’t portraying every child with special needs, she has an extremely rare chromosome disorder called DYRK1A
Studies are being done on the human digestive system and the countless microbes that exist in each individual human "gut", (for lack of a better word) and how each individuals' balance of microbes can affect their health and behavior. This includes studies on how an imbalance of microbes in the gut may cause autism. The over-prescription of antibiotics and how THAT affects our gut, and also our general health is also being focused upon. Studies on mice, where normal mice's gut microbiomes have been chemically altered have produced autism-like symptoms. Once the healthy gut microbiome is re-established, those symptoms have been reversed. A library, either physical or on-line is the perfect place to learn more.
What are your cited sources?
As someone who has Autism this is quite offensive to me. Whether it's science or you (I don't particularly care) being compared to mice is very upsetting
@@yelenakate4ever200 Studies are done on other animals like dogs, rats, mice, monkeys, etc. BEFORE any medical trials are acceptable to be done on people. Even cosmetics are tested on animals first. You aren't being "compared" to mice but the fact that scientists are doing their best to help people through conducting animal studies would normally please most people because a cure it being sought. I'm sorry you aren't comforted by that.
@@JustMe-vk4fn oh no my bad I misunderstood what you commented sorry my bad
I'm curious about your sources too, because current scientific knowledge of autism (studies with actual reproducible results) indicates it's neurological and non-reversible. The only people who have claimed it is reversible are people selling something to desperate parents.
