Question: do you think you would have been as successful as you are in your woodworking business without the UA-cam channel? Just wanted to see if this would be something to pursue if it meant trying to add the streaming/socialedia aspect to it

Due to being diagnosed with Distal Muscular Atrophy and losing my job due to COVID related issues I retired at 61 years of age. I am on a fixed income so I cannot afford to send you any “gifts” but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your UA-cam videos! I have gone back to my roots and started building farmhouse furniture (I actually sold a quilt ladder and a craft table). I do all my work in a 12’x 12’ uninsulated shed. Keep up the good work.

#6 is probably the most critical. On the rare occasions I did not get payment up front 99% of the time I got screwed. I take 100% up front always from now on, and sometimes I'll take 50% from a reputable business. And friends and family are absolutely the worst about taking advantage

I have a dewalt mobile table saw, dual bevel miter saw, circ saw, chisels, drills, angle grinders etc. It's plenty enough already, the obvious missing component that I *NEED* is a thickness planer. You never think about it until you do woodworking. All my stuff sat around for about 10 years at this point and I decided to get back into things. Great video!

I built a couple noodle boards for a friend and my sister in law. Posted pictures on Facebook Marketplace with in the first 3-4 days I now have 9 additional boards to build and sell. 5 of which are only need the monogram to be ready for delivery. The other 4 will be started next week. It is very fulfilling to see people, no matter how many people, want something you build. Thank you for your guidance.

I had a business plan but that changed a couple times in the past 6 months as I adapted to the local markets. I started out selling live edge slabs and lumber. But found that 2x4s and 2x6s are not a profitable use of my time here so I am moving to outdoor furniture and planning to sell live edge furniture soon.
My main source of income, my main YT channel since 2007, was cut. Cannot figure that out but YT cut my pay from thousands to a couple hundred over a short period. So I jumped off the cliff on this business all the way. Did not have an option here.

I will say after 40 some years of being a Craftsman in a carpenter nothing better I would like to do at 64 years old is to build in my shop only. And I think it's going to come to that at some point. But right now up here in northern Michigan there are not enough Craftsman or Carpenters to do the work that needs to be done. So much work that I have actually pulled my business card from boards at gas stations laundromats grocery stores because I just can't keep up with the calls. That being said your advice is sound! Mahalo this was great information. I just moved into my own apartment back in November 2021. I built my bed back in November. I also made my first coffee table with the scrap pieces from the bed and other materials purchased to complete it. Since then I have made 8 bed frames and 10 coffee tables for people who saw my post on Facebook and they posted on theirs and it just snowballed. I recently made an end table and I already have orders for those. Im trying to finish these beds and coffee tables before I can fulfill the end tables. Its just crazy though how long it took to complete my first projects and now I can turn them out in a day or so. Im just so happy cause i was able to get a dewalt mitre saw to help with repeated cuts. I will need to check on a business license or something since I am making money now at it.

Low cost two years ago is no longer possible today. Short changing yourself really makes you margin sensitive to the point of impossibility. You absolutely must have some wiggle room to account for variations in cost and availability of materials. Otherwise, you’re just treading water in the North Atlantic - eventually, you’re going to go under.

Mr. Matt, I just recently found your channel. You sir are very informative and inspiring in both woodworking and spiritual. I love what you do, so thank you for your guidance. I’m looking to start a woodworking business. How do you determine your hourly rate or do you have a formal for determining your price per piece that you make. Thank you in advance.
