A Little Knowldedge: Casa Viçens

Within the city of Barcelona, lies a very special work of art:
This is Casa Viçens, one of Europe’s first expressions of modernist architecture.
In 1883, Manuel Vicens i Montaner commissioned the construction of a summer house to a young and talented Catalan architect: Antoni Gaudí. Who at the age of 31, accepted the challenge of leading his first full building project, only to astonish the world with his fresh new perspective.
Inspired by nature, and eager to learn from it, Gaudí presents us with an intricate design that pays tribute and benefits from the surrounding landscape and its elements:
- When positioning the house, he took the seasons of the year and consequently lighting effects into consideration, to the extent of marking the cardinal points directly on its walls.
- By mimicking the symmetry of natural elements such as native plants and flowers in a wide range of materials, he took craftsmanship to another level. The palm leaf motif on the gate and the carnations depicted on the façade ceramics, truly stand out for their beauty and technique.
- Fully aware of the need to unite both the interior and exterior in one single concept. Gaudí played with complex architectural details, full of color, texture, light, and shadows. Inviting the outside scenery to enter and reiterate throughout the house.
