I love how the handheld games took the strategic gameplay of Memories instead of the mindless buttonmashing from the mainline series where your combo lasts 20 hits and only does the equivalent of 1 fireball. Sure it's flashy, but when you step back and think about it, you're not really doing anything except following instructions on the screen and waiting for your combo to end.

I'm joking, you raise a solid point. I'm one of the people that loves hack and slash, but especially after playing through and watching Union Cross / Dark Road, I have really changed the way I view games. They are incredibly well done, and I feel bad for mocking these games. They were actually so far ahead of everyone else at the time.
If you hold the A button during Deep Thundaga, it strikes like a machinegun in the center and makes a thunderstorm around the aim circle. It's of the most powerfull finishers because of that.

Nomura, while I'm impressed with where the story is going, the gameplay is starting to lack! He needs to make the next KH game have the most satisfying combat out of every game. That will get more new fans than anything.

The problem lies in how often the game switches away from that awesome combat system and forces you into a gimmick system
Tbh data soras development in recoded was really amazing, even though it's not our Sora, it's still Sora, and the fact that he had to be independent in the data world was really cool and his friendship with Mickey was a really nice touch

honestly! i also loved the fact that he got his own real keyblade towards the end. it really expands the lore by showing us that even beings with no heart (data versions or Nobodies) can grow a heart of their own through the power of making memories with the people they care about (aka why Roxas has a heart)
Data Sora is straight up better written than actual Sora to be entirely honest. He has a lot more basic "Videogame Protagonist"-like traits, but that fits right in because he is made of data and the game is about answering the question of if an artificial being can actually evolve past its boundries.(Which is a question posed in CoM and Days.)

The Re:Coded gameplay was definitely pretty cool especially when it comes to how Sora attacks depending on the Keyblade. I wish they brought that back where depending on the Keyblade, Sora can attack differently in his base form minus the Keyblade transformations.

Ya, one of my complaints for KH3 is how out of place it is fighting xehanorts with yoyos, a drill and a flag. It does not fit the mood, heck Sora smile too much during that sequence. The reason why I like KH2 so much is that Sora's mastery of the keyblade, which are also reflected in his reaction commands. Even in his 3 forms, Sora still feel serious and it fit the fight at hand. Also, its godamn badass.
Can I also mention fighting using Disney's attractions summon?
The combat in the command menu games are great, the issue is that a many people NEVER experiment with commands and almost always stick with the basic commands causing them to stick with the basic combos with the simple commands like fire and basic strike raid
This!!! I just finished my LVL 1 crit run of BBS and there are so many unique ways that you can use commands.
A lot of them you can used as a combo finisher because the enemy will already be staggered.
Simpler ones like with quick blitz and sliding dash can be used to close distance for the beginning of a combo.
Then you got something unique to the Command Deck games and 358 / 2, which is the fact that dodging in the middle of a combo doesn't stop it so if you defeat an enemy on the second to last hit of your combo, you can dodge roll toward the next enemy and use the finisher.
The Command Deck games get a lot of hate for being floaty, or enemies not staggering constantly, but those things aren't inherently bad like people make it out to be. It's just that you have to take a different approach to things than you would an ordinary hack and slash and think of it more like Dark Souls.
I challenged myself to only use Balloon spells as a last resort when I played critical DDD and it was such a blast experimenting with commands and links.
Hell, Dark Aura can be used to outright skip that one annoying part of the 2nd Ansem fight which I never knew until I tried it.
@@-memoria-2136 I only used one of each ballon max in a crit no once more-run and discovered that ballonra is actually almost certain to kill the player if they don't use ballonga first.(ballonga throws enemies into the air, giving enough time for the animation)
I really do try to experiment with commands. The only time I got any interest commands was Exo Spark from recoded( I think I fused two spark commands) and Shadow Dash and Geo Impact with Terra.
the thing is that re:coded is overall balanced with commands, and actually focuses more on combos, making you use the commands to fill the clock gauge so your regular attacks can dish out the pain, and the attack commands can be used inside of a combo pretty seamlessly for a ds game. There's a flow and there's more balance, plus the op attack is only really unlocked right at the end of the game, and still has to be aimed correctly to deal high damage (judgment triad).
In bbs and ddd, (but more so bbs), the commands not only feel detached from your combos and delayed, so you can't mix them together, but they're so strong and consistent compared to the combos, that frequently don't make the enemy stagger for some reason, that there's no reason for you to use combos.
Then due to said delayed feeling and lack of limitations like re:coded's CPU system, you'll never use some of the tecnically weaker commands and moves and will just focus on one strategy by filling your deck with the same kinds of commands.
Mobs and bosses are also detached in strategies. Mobs are slow and don't deal too much damage, so you spam slow aoe moves that make you vulnerable, the ones that take effort to create, but suddenly by the endgame said moves you worked so hard for get you killed by bosses, and you need to resort to spamming mines and surges.
And in re:coded, the command grinding is just naturally incorporated into the gameplay, and can even be sped up at the cost of something else through the sliders in the matrix.
Bbs and ddd force you to play bad Mario party and shit tamagotchi.
It'd be kinda cool if they made kingdom hearts more rpglike and actually have skill trees. Have a magic tree that blends into a melee tree to get the elemental strike attacks and stuff

If Sora had every ability and magic from every game, along with the abilities his data version had... I'd be convinced that Sora would end up becoming the next Master of Masters.

That's the whole point of Limit Form in fact in KH2, it was to essentially give back abilities Sora had forgotten in KH1.
The universe had to nerf Sora otherwise he would've bodied the Organisation. Sora is always considered "not a true keyblade wielder" and someone who has to depend on others... but he has beaten every other character at least once, many of whom are "actual" keyblade wielders and adults, while he was between 14-15 years old.
And this is just Data-Sora's command deck; his Keyblades are ALSO the strongest in the series, especially Zero-One, which he apparently built himself and has the most ridiculously overpowered ability ever, "Targeting Scope", which gives his melee attacks more range than Xigbar. Do an aerial spin (possibly with one of the "Storm" commands), and watch your enemies pop like fireworks as the targeting reticle keeps moving to the nearest not-dead enemy. It even goes right through frontal defenses like Large Bodies' bellies!
fun fact, Flame Fall, Icicle Mine, and Thunder Tracer can all be linked to how each magic worked in Days, Flame Fall is Days Firaga, Icicle Mine is Days Blizzaga, and Thunder Tracer is Days Thunder

Triple Pursuit for freezing, Esuna clears status effects AND heals, Chain Rave is a moving lingering guard with a bunch of damage, Mega Flare as a finish command, Zero-One with Target Scope.
Someone should make an animation or something like death battle but with kh characters instead

Since you didnt notice, the golfing like animation sora uses in that one attack is actually a recreation of one of the animations he does in one of his limit breaks with goofy im pretty sure
Makes me wonder how the team will work with more Combo Modifiers in the future of the series.
I would like them to work in conjunction with the direction of the stick while confirming the Attack Command, or even if some are linked to Keyblades since we now have Keyblade Switching during battle.

I didn't realize until now just how many moves re:coded borrowed from other games: flame fall, blizzaga pursuit, icicle mine, wind tracer, and thunder tracer are 358/2 days' firaga, blizzard, blizzaga, aerora, and thunder. Exo Spark is BBS' Thunderbolt finisher, D-Firaga is Mushu from Re:CoM, and D-Thundaga is Terra's Maleficent D-link finisher.
Exo spark is actually final form thunder, though bbs thunderbolt finisher is very similar so i can understand the confusion

They aren't named like that, but Days has a lot of magic that's very similar to the advanced elemental stuff here; Blizzara is basically a big giant Icicle Mine, regular Thunder is like a non-homing Thunder Tracer, and Aerora is Wind Tracer.
You forgot the fact Triple Pursuit can also freeze enemies, and that it can freeze them so easily that this single move often completely shuts down whatever enemy your facing

Re:Coded was underrated. So glad you brought this up. His abilities and the upgrade system was so good in this game. Upgrading the keyblades was top notch.
Finally giving some love to one of my favorites
This game is fucking awesome. If you choose to forgo the elemental bonuses, the abilities become so cheap to cast that you can chain them endlessly. No ability is useless.
I wish they used Chain Rave in the other games. It would open a whole new angle of attack and using Chain Rave can even block or deflect attacks that hit it.
So it’s both a shield and a sword technique.
I mean anyone remember how Ichigo’s hollow fights? Spinning zangetsu by the ribbon for extended range attacks and to be harder to predict?
If he can do that, the keyblade wielders should too!

Oh, these animations are neat. Good stuff to take inspiration from.
Also note that Blizzaga from 358/2 Days has the same effect as Icicle Mine in Re:coded, while Blizzard in Days works like Blizzaga Pursuit in Re:coded, because the spells in Days worked completely differently based on the tier. I'm glad they reused some of those neat magic effects, because the magic system in Days was painfully obtuse.
Dude, re:coded's story might not be anything special, but I think it has some of the most unique and interesting combat of the KH handheld games. The way the overclock gauge worked and gave you more abilities as you built it up mid combat was so sick and gave every keyblade basically it's own playstyle.
Also, with D-Thundaga, I'm pretty sure you can either hold the A button or mash it to summon a giant column of lighting for just melting enemies.
A little tip with the D-Thunder/D-Thundaga:
If you hold the button down, you can send out a lot of lightning bolts.

I been preaching gospel about re:coded and slapping blocks since high-school. This game is so much got damn fun. It's crazy. I really like the upgrade system the most.

I think it's worth noting that Flame Fall, Icicle Mine, Blizzaga Pursuit, Wind Tracer, and Thunder Tracer appear to be based off of the way you use Firaga, Blizzaga, Blizzard, Aerora, and Thunder in 358/2 Days.

I absolutely adored oblivion in that game, the whole keyblade level up during combat was awesome imo. With Oblivion, you took damage as you attacked, but your damage output was insane

Real talk; the Handheld command deck system is infinitely better than having to handle MP and manually cast spells.
It's inherently spam-resiliant, offers more control over combos, and more thouhtful.

Chain rave is pretty cool never knew about that concept art hopefully we see some more keyblade focused moves again in later entrys.
For D-Thundaga, if you hold the A button when using it, also makes the thunder strike more aggressively, which makes it look even cooler
I love these break downs of the older games.
Something extra about the D-Thundaga finisher family, holding down A allows you to drop a big, continous chain of lightning instead of a single strike, which works great for bosses that like to move and have a decently sized hitbox.
Slam command combined with the Three Wishes keyblade aerial combos makes it possible to keep up air time and abuse that keyblade's combos indefinitely.
It's always fun to see Final Fantasy spells turned into Kingdom Hearts commands. Especially with cases like Quake where it's turned into a dumb melee attack of sorts.
With D-Thundaga, if no one else mentioned it, if you hold A down longer the bolts increase in intesity but with slower movement. Good to dealing single target damage.
Metal Chocobo at max lvl charge + Judgment Triad = The fastest Roxas kill in the game

Gravity and time magic should have never left the series. By how riku speaks in 3, it's seems time magic could have a negative side effect, and playing an idea out with that could be cool, also gravity magic is just amazing. With BBS I always wondered why gravity and magnet wouldn't make a type of black hole that eradicated unversed.

Judgement Triad saved my ass so many times, and even before I knew about it, I still used Triple Pursuit, Exo Spark, and Chain Rave religiously (and still do)
I finally beat the last 13 floor sector after years, absolute YEARS of being stuck on it just a few months ago, and yeah those were lifesavers. I gotta say that I really loved Re:Coded’s gameplay, and I also love revisiting Olympus for the epic RPG mode lol
