When this first came out, he had actual Vietnam survivors on the stage. They were to just sing the chorus. Cant hear this without crying. The words are so powerful. U should watch the earlier version with the photos. Its a beautiful tribute to those brave souls. Thank u for reacting to this- God bless to all those who served and still serving. Another great one is We didnt Start the Fire
He often used to invite vets from the audience to sing with him. This is a moving performance but if you get a chance, check out a performance of this from the 1980s. His voice on it is so strong and the pace is different - - more powerful. The vets were only back from Vietnam for about a decade and it was during a time when Vietnam vets were treated like such crap. He was someone who really brought the attention from the politics of the war back to the soldiers themselves. This was a really important moment in music. I like your reaction style. All the best.
Thanks for the Billy Joel reaction. Great choice for veteran’s day. Billy’s catalog is deep and well worth the time to explore it. Some of his best stuff are album cuts that never got radio play. This was from a concert “The Last Play at Shea” where he did the closing concert before they tore it down. He does have a Yankee Stadium video as well. I’ve seen him at Wrigley a few times, best place on earth.
Wrigley is the best place on Earth! Horrible amenities at the ballpark but still..people will have the time of their lives there! I will definitely check out "The Last Play At Shea", Jami..& thank you!
This is a beautifully done masterpiece. Written with and for Vietnam Vets (and all vets) 😢

If you looked closer at some of the people in the chorus there are NY 9/11 first responders included. Billy Joel is a great singer and a great man.
I saw him perform this live at Nats stadium in DC and there wasn’t a dry eye. He had Vietnam vets come on stage and sing chorus.
Check out the performance of this at Kennedy Center honors Billy Joel and all the vets who came onstage to sing

@@youmaderoskoe there is no place like Wrigley Field. The sense of history and the vibe there is only rivaled by Fenway.
@@jamishops Haven't been to Fenway but it's on the bucket list!
