Il est d’autres conceptions de cette œuvre tout aussi respectables et peut-être même un peu plus “schumannienes”, mais cette combinaison d’intensité et de légèreté tout à la fois me paraît unique.
I had read that the pre-WWII Haskil was considered as great as (or greater than) Horowitz and Rubinstein -- how wonderful to hear the proof! Thank you for posting this -- where can one buy this recording?

Not really. It's everybody else - even Richter, Arrau - who is too slow and ponderous. This is from the "Papillons" times of Schumann - the ineffable and uncatchable image of a girl who's more of a fugitive vision than of a portrait. Nobody played these variations like Clara, nobody.
I believe this is one of the greatest piano performances ever recorded.
