    I just really love the foreshadowing in this show. Like how Jamie is enthusiastic to finally fight a worthy opponent but all his excitement got ruined in the end because of that soldier who stabbed Ned in the leg. It kinda foreshadows how excited we were at the beginning of the show to see how it ends and then season 8 stabbed us in the back and that enthusiasm was there no more.

    I love this scene so much because you can tell exactly where the two characters are. Jaime HATES Ned for not seeing his side in the killing of the mad king and this was supposed to be his revenge for it, where he "bests" Ned to prove who the better man is. Except he doesn't get this chance, because one of his men stabs Ned through the leg in a cowardly move. And when Ned looks up at him Jaime can tell exactly what he's thinking, "fucking cowardly Lannisters" and he's right, and Jaime is infuriated by no end to this because once again even though Ned is the one on the ground he's still the one with the moral high ground from an honor perspective. Fucking love it.

      And, the thing is, it seemed like Jaime WASN'T going to best him. Jaime looked to be fighting will all of his effort, and Ned was matching that, stroke for stroke. The only reason he was groaning wasn't because he was struggling or fatigued, but he was groaning out of anger and the loss of Jory and the others. Also, notice all these dozens of people standing on the balconies like, "DAMN!!" totally surprised that an old man who hasn't fought in twenty years or more is beating the LEGENDARY Jaime Lannister, who has been fighting all his life. 🤣

    I’ve always loved how Jaime’s expression at :43 suggests he’s actually surprised and outraged by Ned saying he commanded Tyrion’s capture. He was all ready to do a duel of words like so many do in King’s Landing - never admitting anything - but the northern honesty catches him off guard. You can really see that in his expression.

    • @Ryanfinder226
      @Ryanfinder226 Рік тому +160

      It’s not even honesty. It’s a lie to protect his wife. The shock is more likley from the fact that Jaime wouldn’t have expected the honorable Ned to have seized his brother so blatantly. However due to his reputation Jaime instantly beleives him.

    • @AzguardMike

      a more accurate thing would be to say
      "Usually people talk in riddles and half truths. Ned flat out saying 'I ordered Tyrion to be captured' leaves no room for interpretation."
      Yes its a lie to protect his wife, but he is being honourable. He knows Jamie is a better fighter. He knows the numbers are against him. Jamie has vigour, age, stamina, the men. Ned knows he might die here (and would of if that guard didnt stab his thigh ruining Jamie's hate boner). He hopes Tywin would be merciful IF they ever went after Tyrion.

    I love Jaime’s interest in Ned. Since his King-slaying, Jaime has this terrible yearning for honour, something Ned Stark is known for. This manifests as a sort of desire to prove himself to Ned. First he tries to win that approval in their conversation about the mad king and then when Ned puts him down, he tries to prove it by beating him in combat. This is why the soldiers dishonourable backstabbing of Ned so angers Jaime. Just means yet again, he doesn’t get that honourable victory. This irony is that Ned’s own famous defeat of Arthur Dayne was in fact eerily similar.

    Things I love about this scene is the small details.
    1) Jaime's expression throughout proves that (at this point) he clearly relishes 1 on 1 skill driven combat. From his efforts to engage in a duel, to his disappointment when it's abruptly ended by an outside party.
    2) Ned is clearly less skilled, but in turn is slightly stronger, as seen when both swords are locked, and Jaime is on the defensive; somewhat leveling the playing field.
    3) Ned is sluggish, with heavier strikes, most likely to his experience with weapons such as Ice. Jaime however treats sword fighting as more of a dance, flourishing where possible, displaying his skill through intimidating arrogance with actual backing.
    Back when things weren't being rushed in order to collect some Disney Star Wars money, this show was truly something to behold.

    In the books :
    The rain was falling harder now, stinging the eyes and drumming against the ground. Rivers of black water were running down the hill when Jory called out, "My lord," his voice hoarse with alarm. And in an instant, the street was full of soldiers.
    Ned glimpsed ringmail over leather, gauntlets and greaves, steel helms with golden lions on the crests. Their cloaks clung to their backs, sodden with rain. He had no time to count, but there were ten at least, a line of them, on foot, blocking the street, with longswords and iron-tipped spears. "Behind!" he heard Wyl cry, and when he turned his horse, there were more in back of them, cutting off their retreat. Jory's sword came singing from its scabbard. "Make way or die!"
    "The wolves are howling," their leader said. Ned could see rain running down his face. "Such a small pack, though."
    Littlefinger walked his horse forward, step by careful step. "What is the meaning of this? This is the Hand of the King."
    He was the Hand of the King. Now, if truth be told, I'm not sure what he is."
    "Lannister, this is madness," Littlefinger said. "Let us pass. We are expected back at the castle. What do you think you're doing?"
    "He knows what he's doing," Ned said calmly.
    Jaime Lannister smiled. "Quite true. I'm looking for my brother. You remember my brother, don't you, Lord Stark? He was with us at Winterfell. Fair-haired, mismatched eyes, sharp of tongue. A short man."
    "I remember him well," Ned replied.
    "It would seem he has met some trouble on the road. My lord father is quite vexed. You would not perchance have any notion of who might have wished my brother ill, would you?"
    "Your brother has been taken at my command, to answer for his crimes," Ned Stark said.
    Littlefinger groaned in dismay. "My lords-"
    Ser Jaime ripped his longsword from its sheath and urged his stallion forward. "Show me your steel, Lord Eddard. I'll butcher you like Aerys if I must, but I'd sooner you died with a blade in your hand."
    "Lord Baelish, I'd leave here in some haste if I did not care to get bloodstains on my costly clothing."
    Littlefinger did not need to be urged. "I will bring the City Watch," he promised Ned. The Lannister line parted to let him through, and closed behind him. Littlefinger put his heels to his mare and vanished around a corner.
    Ned's men had drawn their swords, but they were three against twenty. Eyes watched from nearby windows and doors, but no one was about to intervene.
    "Kill me," he warned the Kingslayer, "and Catelyn will most certainly slay Tyrion."
    "Would she? The noble Catelyn Tully of Riverrun murder a hostage? I think . . . not." He sighed. "But I am not willing to chance my brother's life on a woman's honor." Jaime slid the golden sword into its sheath. "So I suppose I'll let you run back to Robert to tell him how I frightened you. I wonder if he'll care." Jaime pushed his wet hair back with his fingers and wheeled his horse around. When he was beyond the line of swordsmen, he glanced back at his captain. "Tregar, see that no harm comes to Lord Stark."
    "As you say, m'lord."
    "Still . . . we wouldn't want him to leave here entirely unchastened, so"-through the night and the rain, he glimpsed the white of Jaime's smile-"kill his men."
    "No!" Ned Stark screamed, clawing for his sword. Jaime was already cantering off down the street as he heard Wyl shout. Men closed from both sides. Ned rode one down, cutting at phantoms in red cloaks who gave way before him. Jory Cassel put his heels into his mount and charged. A steel-shod hoof caught a Lannister guardsman in the face with a sickening crunch. A second man reeled away and for an instant Jory was free. Wyl cursed as they pulled him off his dying horse, swords slashing in the rain. Ned galloped to him, bringing his longsword down on Tregar's helm. The jolt of impact made him grit his teeth. Tregar stumbled to his knees, his lion crest sheared in half, blood running down his face. Heward was hacking at the hands that had seized his bridle when a spear caught him in the belly. Suddenly Jory was back among them, a red rain flying from his sword. "No!" Ned shouted. "Jory, away!" Ned's horse slipped under him and came crashing down in the mud. There was a moment of blinding pain and the taste of blood in his mouth.
    He saw them cut the legs from Jory's mount and drag him to the earth, swords rising and failing as they closed in around him. When Ned's horse lurched back to its feet, he tried to rise, only to fall again, choking on his scream. He could see the splintered bone poking through his calf. It was the last thing he saw for a time. The rain came down and down and down.
    When he opened his eyes again, Lord Eddard Stark was alone with his dead. His horse moved closer, caught the rank scent of blood, and galloped away. Ned began to drag himself through the mud, gritting his teeth at the agony in his leg. It seemed to take years. Faces watched from candlelit windows, and people began to emerge from alleys and doors, but no one moved to help.
    Littlefinger and the City Watch found him there in the street, cradling Jory Cassel's body in his arms.
    Somewhere the gold cloaks found a litter, but the trip back to the castle was a blur of agony, and Ned lost consciousness more than once. He remembered seeing the Red Keep looming ahead of him in the first grey light of dawn. The rain had darkened the pale pink stone of the massive walls to the color of blood.
    Thanks for the attention. It's nice to see people appreciate the book.
    Take care everyone. And stay strong.

    "I'm going to bring the city watch" It's the small details that really show Little finger's true brilliance. He isn't going to bring the city watch, but by loudly pronouncing he is, he shows Eddard that his loyality is with the Starks but the city watch not arriving shows Jamie that he is loyal to the Lannisters. He always plays the field and never truly commits to a side unless he knows it is the winning side. In that situation he could've then said to both of them "Ed, they didn't arrive in time" or "Jamie, they never arrived because I never actually called them".

    This scene is 3,5 min long and tells so much for season 1 itself and when looking back, we see at least 10 things:
    1) Jaime truly loves Tyrion;
    2) Ned despises Jaime (this contempt in the eyes) or even all Lannisters - to a greater or lesser degree;
    3) Jaime hates that Ned looks at him in that way (cause he hates people see only Kingslayer in him);
    4) Jaime is so excited that he fights with worthy opponent...
    5) and disappointed that he cannot prove he can beat him honourably;
    6) Ned's swording style is completely different than Jaime's (heavy strikes vs 'dancing' with the sword) but both can fight very well;
    7) Jaime is even bit surprised by Ned's sword skills;
    8) Littlefinger pretends he cares and then goes away 'to alarm City Watch' that never arrives;
    9) Ned hates Jaime even more and this fight only confirms that Jaime is a dishonourable man; and
    10) Jaime is even worse in politics than Ned, as he actually thought about killing Ned, who says that commanded to take Tyrion.

This isn't downplaying Ned's skills, but rather telling how big of a difference there is between the best and the average. Ned is definitely above average, as any well-trained knight/lord would be. Just look at John Snow when he arrives Castle Black. He's able to toy with normal, untrained people, despite him only being 14 years old, being trained by a castle's master-at-arms since a young age. Ned definitely could easily defeat any average soldier one-on one, but in the books, Jamie cut through Robb's bodyguards "as butter" before he is overwhelmed. He's a kingsguard, and one of the absolute best of them. He's arguably better that Barristan at the time of the show, which says a lot (considering Barristan confidently said he could defeat 5 other kingsguards with ease). If the average swordsman would be a 5, ned was likely a 7 or an 8. Problem is he's fighting a 10.

      Nikolaj is superb at conveying character through body language. My favourite scene in the show is his incredible performance when he's describing killing the Mad King to Brienne. He starts off bitterly amused as he says "That's the look. I've seen it for seventeen years," and as he relives the moment he gets angrier and more resentful, all the while slowly getting weaker until he's picturing the way Ned Stark looked at him and just FORCING out the last few words full of such rage, barely able to keep himself upright. Just fantastic.

    Jaime’s role model growing up was Ser Arthur Dayne. Dayne was praised as the greatest swordsman in the world, even greater than Ser Barristan Selmy. Ned was famous for killing Ser Arthur Dayne in a sword fight. Naturally, Jaime was eager to cross blades with the man who killed his idol. After all, how could he consider himself the greatest if Ned went unbeaten by him? When that guard stabbed Ned from behind he lost his chance to test his metal against the man who allegedly bested the greatest swordsman in the world.
