  • Did a dive shop offer to "micro adjust" your second stage for optimum breathing? Alec shows what "micro adjusting" is and if its of any benefit to most divers.

    and YES DACOR regs RULED until the company closed its doors years ago ! and how do I know ? My two Dacor Pacer 900's always worked for 40 years until they needed to be fine tuned and no shop in the USA would even touch them to help me out ... BUT I was lucky to find a highly skilled and handsome SCUBA tech in Canada that was able to fine tune them to work like brand new again ! THANK YOU again Alec my 45 year old Pacer 900's are still working perfectly !

      So glad to know they are still working and being used. Dacor was a great innovator and respected gear maker. That old guy in Canada must have done an ok job!

    at glance, the difference between 0.5" H2o and 1.0" h2o breathing resistance may be undetectable but for somebody that dive for very long period as a professionnal diver can see a notable difference.
    a very good point
    excellent explanation
    excellent video

      Every dive & every diver is unique. What one diver considers easy breathing may be terrible for another. Add the complication of a long, hard dive and your suggestion may well be correct. Alec

    Everything said here is very easy to understand. I myself dive apeks and have them set up a bit heavier because i like to dpv. And kf they were setup optimally they would fteeflow under the speed under water.

      If you're a DPV diver, they are so much fun, you have to plan to have your setup heavier. New users don't realize this until after their first dive then back to the shop. Thanks for sharing this info.

    After my OW Certification I purchased a set of Genesis Prana Reg and Octo. Had my tank filled. Went to Test them. The Adjustment knob really made it hard to breath when turned in. To the point of not being able to. Didn't Test it in water yet.

      Good to test any new gear or post service, before diving. Show the problem to your service pro and ask for a re-check.

    Hi Alec It is funny to see some of the 40+ regulators still working fine silicone and brass, what can go wrong you may just replace the soft seat seal with a new piece of rubber and good as new. I did find on many of the early regs the restricted exhaust was a pain but the two mushroom valves or at least the larger size solves that issue. I wonder how the "micro-piel " used in the deep breathed? It had a much smaller diaphragm ,and thank goodness she had on those gardening gloves for protection from the blow fish. Take care Owen m

      SAD to say ... Dacor went out of business 25 or so years ago and those much needed replacement parts are no longer available .... I was VERY VERY lucky that Alec was able to get those need parts to rebuild my two DACOR Pacer 900's that I had bought in 1979 ! The dive shops in Chicago were scared to touch them due to their business insurance restrictions !

    Hey Alec, what other company's 2nd stage is featuring a Fine Tuning option? Are there any right now Or were? Because I've only heard the PACER* Is the one with this feature. Other companies only says to adjust the Seat Puppet and thats it. If they are, are they also mentioned in the schematics or are hidden? Thanks

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  2 місяці тому

      Few companies offer the MICRO-ADJUST feature now.
      I could say it's because they watch my videos & decided I was right - it's a waste of time.
      But, the truth is probably more prosaic - it is more expensive to maker, subject to more breakdown, high maintenance AND probably wasn't proving to be a big selling feature.
      Any parts breakdown (schematics if you like) will show all the parts in the regulator.
      I cannot think of a brand offering Micro Adjusting right now.
      You realize that the DACOR Pacer is almost 40 years old. It will soon be classed as 'vintage'!

    Hi Alec
    I could imagine micro adjusting like 0.5 or 0.7 you may just realizing at 40m or if you do tec diving to 50m or deeper, I guess.

      Of course, the deeper the dive the greater the importance of low breathing resistance. That is the value of Deep Diver or Tech Diver training. Alec

    i just bought a new regulator 1st stage only. how important is it to buy a primary 2nd stage by the same manufacturer.

      Todays 1st and 2nd stages are almost totally compatible with other brands. This video on mixing brands will explain it for you. ua-cam.com/video/MBPb_Js_Pck/v-deo.html

    I have a like new pacer xl any idea where I can get parts, it's a beautiful regulator and seems to work fine but never took it apart. Thanks

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  4 місяці тому +1

      Take your regulator to any decent dive store with an experienced service person. They ought to be able to determine that the 1st stage is working well. Finding a new HP (high pressure) seat for the DACOR 1st may be hard. But if it is sealing OK, you may not need it. A change of the filter may be all that's required. Filters & the soft seat in the 2nd stage are easily obtained from Trident Dive, a supplier to all dive stores.
      Older regulators did not have "Service Kits" which had all of the parts necessary to service a reg. If a service kit is available, dive stores are advised to replace all of the parts, whether the older parts were compromised or not. But that is no more a necessity than having to replace your wheel bearings when doing a brake job - a related part that COULD be changed but is not needed. Reputable service people will use all the parts in a kit partly to ensure compatibility & reliability & partly for liability reasons. Some stores will service your regs using only the parts that they decide need replacing & then keep the other parts. Not smart!!
      With your regulator, any decent dive store with an experienced (dare I say old?!!) service guy can help.
      Good luck. Alec
