- A six-month trial testing the costs and benefits of a four-day working week across a number of different businesses has ended in success.
Sixty-one employers across the UK took part in the trial, and were all keen to permanently implement the new work pattern upon its completion.
A report assessing the impact of the alternative working hours found it had "extensive benefits", particularly for employees' well-being.

'"Work Shy'" it has nothing to do with work shy but work life balance, you make bold statements but don't think before you speak , majority of public are not for wealthy well off backgrounds and these are hard working people. It's crazy that it took this long for companies to learn that taking care of employees increases their productivity.

@@boulevard14you can also look at it another way. You're paying more for each hour because employees are being more productive in those hours. I highly recommend you read the studies. While yes, you're paying more for less hours, those hours are more productive since overall productivity did not take a hit after the transition. On top of this, employees feel better, they have more time to do other things. I don't have data to support this but I'd think that the extra day off could mean workers can actually go out, do things, spend and contribute more to the economy as well.
So workers should be docked the 2hrs each day they haven't been working.

The study clearly stated no impact to revenue, inferring a similar amount accomplished despite reduced work time. The nearly 2/3rds reduction in sick days by itself likely goes a ways to balance out the shortened work week.

I’m a 72 year old maintenance engineer and my employer will not grant me part-time working. I really hope more businesses adopt 4 day working. It has always made sense to me. Well done to those business Leaders who have had the courage to give this a trial.

Thank you all for your kind words. I lost my main pension when the business declared bankruptcy and I enjoy working but 4 days would help me & people like me who still want to contribute to our society and earn enough to live. I would just enjoy a bit of flexibility.

I changed from 5 days a week at 37.5hrs to 4 days at 30hrs. I have Wednesday and weekends off. It's been a HUGE change for me. My work/life balance is perfect. I have time with my family, friends and to spend time doing things I like on my Wednesday to myself. Working only 2 days back to back at a time feels so manageable and I am able to give more to my work on those days.
I wish my country did this 😔

I did the same thing and my stress has gone down so much. I’m cheerful when I come to work. I’m lucky that I can still support myself on part time, as long as my rent stays low enough. It means less money for me, but I can get by and it’s worth less stress.

I'm assuming the 4 day week within the department you're working at in the NHS is still 37.5 hours over the 4 days rather than reduced hours for the same full time pay? That's what a couple of my supervisors are doing in my workplace in NHS.
Only time that 30 hours work for 37.5 pay was during the first pandemic lockdowns when the workload was down to a minimum and they needed to have more people socially distant in the workplace.

In Japan, especially, in many companies you arent supposed to leave on time for fear of being sidelined - everyone is watching each other. In Taiwan, if there’s a holiday on a week day, people are supposed to compensate on Saturday, children as well. A friend in Asia told me that she started a new office job and she wont have vacations or free days in her first year. It’s brutal.

Malta even has 6 day work weeks. During festive season some make employees work 13 days straight before getting their 1 day off!
People need to learn that not overworking your workforce and allowing them to actually have time for themselves to have a life outside of work, will make them happier and even more productive, a literal WIN-WIN.
Do you know if they're fine with that or not though? There are people out there who dedicate themselves to work, purely to accrue capital and make themselves so wealthy they can retire at 40 or 50.

Malta's cost of living has been on a hefty incline for years while the minimum wage barely moves, so defiantly not a case of trying to rake in the dough for early retirement. That's more the big business owners mission rather than normal employees. Its purely the countries greed tbh as this is the norm thoughout, unless you can manage to get into some foreign igaming company or snipe an office job with amazing terms. Both of which can be difficult to find or be accepted for.
So to TLDR answer your question, are they fine with it? No. Do they have much choice other than that? Also no.

I’ve wished for this ever since finishing school. I’m a 28 year old kitchen fitter and believe this 100%. If only business owners were more open minded to try it we could all be happier at work.

I’m employed and a paid a reasonable wage now tho so that’s why I do what I do I guess. To stuck in my comfort zone I suppose, plus’s I have a mortgage and all that now to make sure I can pay for.
Would just be nice if more employers were open minded to try this sort of thing. say it to most people in the building industry tho and 99% of them just laugh and say it’s a stupid idea. The irony in that tho is there usually the ones disappearing for a fag break every 10mins and not really doing a great deal of work or not being productive most of the time.
At Christmas time we all do job and go tho and it’s surprising how fast work gets done when you tell people they can leave once the jobs finished (we only get this luxury at Christmas for some reason 🙄) but I’ve always thought it’s just demoralising working and watching the clock all day if this works for us at Christmas why can’t it be more like that all the time.

What the world needed was Corbyn as PM and Sanders as president. That would've seen change come for the people.
Considering the absolutely obscene improvements in technology, communication speed, general ability to complete a lot of work more quickly, it stands to reason that people nowadays should be able to be as productive in a 4 day span as they were previously in a 5 day span. It won't apply to all sectors and jobs, but it will apply to many.
it will take a long time for the culture to change en masse, likely when the current senior generation retire, because sadly a lot of organisations in the UK are 'cost over value' organisations that see advances in technology and think 'workers can get more done in 5 days and we can generate more profit' rather than thinking about the well being and quality of life of their staff. Despite espousing the importance of work/life balance to their staff many simply view workers as interchangeable, expendable assets and don't really care until there are tribunals to deal with.
I'm a national director/head of sector for a very large UK Design, Construction and Asset Mgmt organisation and have spent 20+ years in c-suite around the old guard, many have their head in the sand and feel personally tied to performance, their 'analog' way of thinking also means they're less likely to embrace digital operations or progressive practices like a 4 day week as they see it as a major threat to their bottom line, even if there is evidence to the contrary.
I currently work 4 days (5th day is unpaid) for mental health reasons and its a game changer.

I do like the idea of a 4 day week even though it won't apply to my work. But I actually think productivity is suffering because for most people, they're over worked and under paid, they loose the drive to work hard.
In my own personal experience, if you work hard, you're rewarded with more work, more stress, and very rarely more or sufficient pay.
But this is good, but could some managers attempt to over work employees, such as people not going on breaks etc?

We have had the technology to increase produ tivity for years and years, this intensity of working 24/7 is normal, organisations won't back track to getting less done. Most are already working like crazy over 5 days, even with the technology, any reduction in hours will result in lower productivity...and more stress over those four days

Income was "largely unharmed"; revenues stayed "broadly the same" - they are ignoring that they did lose money.
Some people want to work because they like their jobs, fixing issues in your personal life and working a full extra day is so much more compared to the meagre and subjective emotional gains they outlined here, offset by the eluded to costs.
Owners and upper management are too scared to try it/change here in USA. So many people in many different positions would benefit from 4 day work week and businesses would be just fine.

I’ve been working 4 day weeks for 6 months now. The freshness I feel now mentally and physically is unbelievable. I’m genuinely a new man. With the amount of stress the new world is all giving us. It’s very much needed, especially for the sake of the kids!

I used to work a 4 day on 4 day off pattern and it was fantastic. Planning for holidays was easy and having a good work/life balance made a huge difference in many ways. With holidays I calculated I only worked 5.9 months of the year. I also enjoyed work more and was more productive when I was there due to my improved positive attitude and wellbeing. When you delve deeper into the benifits across the board the benifits are substantial.
No worries, malicious-compliance will soon fix that by providing a 4-day work-week but splitting the 3 days off into individual days so that you can't do anything useful but lounge at home watching TV becasue a single day off is pointless for a trip or anything. 😒

The end bit where they say it won't become mainstream quickly is an accurate statement, businesses don't change quickly because of those who run them and use them. Customers will expect the same opening hours and the main managers and bosses will be hesitant or stubborn to try a new way when the decades long proven approach has "worked" all along when the new one may work
Honestly it depends on the type of business.
It’s a culture change. We know we can’t buy fresh bread on certain days because the bakery is closed…sort of thing. But larger institutions can rework schedules to overlap to cover 24 hr periods, if needed. But, is it needed? Didn’t the pandemic disprove the ‘I need it now’ mentality?
Well the other side of that coin is that it's an easy win for early adopters to become far more competitive in what is a candiaite driven market at the moment. The best people will demand better conditions so it could become a case of needing to provide this to attract anyone of real quality, simmilar to how WFH/ flxible working is now a must for most offices wanting to retain anyone worth keeping.
My old workplace lost 80% of a signle department in around 4 months because they were all able to find simmilar jobs that would let them work flexibily, I know becuase I did all of their exit interviews.

Only one time I worked for a company that added half a hour from Monday to Thursday and freeing Friday, giving us 4 nights of resting and also giving the chance of even going camping and having time to enjoy it.

Calgary , Alberta went that way: lots of ten hour shifts, four day week. Some guys actually have a three day job on top of their four day job., if you want to just work and get ahead while you're single, footloose, and fancy free. Worked well for me.

@@djan71 Well employees often experience downtime between tasks, I would think this is just getting rid of that downtime that would be spent at work and applying it to Friday.
I used to work a four-day shift in Dublin before moving to a private firm (5 days). Though we worked more hours in a single day, the three days off are absolutely a relief! More healthy and more motivated to work for the four days knowing one has three days off afterwards.
I used to work 4 days a week (part time) and it was INCREDIBLE. I was unbelievably happy with that schedule. Then I switched jobs to a 5 day work week and I am absolutely miserable despite having a better employer, wage, and much easier work.
It’s insane to me that 5/7th’s of your life are spent working. You shouldn’t have to work more than you do living life, ideally it should be the opposite.
And in India, we are working 6 days a week. It's terrible. We always remain exhausted as we have household work in sundays.

They should also do a project-based approach to school like in Agora School in Netherlands. No more having to get our students to focus so much on cramming information just to regurgitate it later for a test and never to use it ever again. That's 13 wasted years of life. Instead, students can just focus on learning what they want to learn while ensuring that the essential skills needed to pass the school system can be learned by a particular age.
This would have helped me so much back when I was 82 hours a week, I was constantly exhausted, I started making mistakes and my mental health plummeted.
after a 5 day work week... i only regain my energy after two days off.. but on the third day, i am back to work... so there is never that ahh disconnected and rejuvenated feeling on a day off !! good for them to get that time !!!

We haven't adopted this where I live and it's doubtful to happen however I dropped my days from 5 to 4 after full time pushed me into a depression. Feeling like you live at work is the absolute worst especially in a job your not keen on. I went from 39 to 32 hours and after a year this has made my life a lot more balanced. I push myself to work on me, going to the gym, picking up new hobbies, wanting to learn new things continue with side projects. The added day pushes you to want to do something more with your life than just work. It works and this practice would be amazing here.
In Jakarta where I used to work I see most workers are happy, and they don't seem stressed; even as traffic condition is 1000x worse than anywhere in the UK with traffic congestion being a waking nightmare and even pedestrian jam! Turns out they've always had used a 4.5 day week, as on Friday they have religious sermon that starts at 11 AM and ends at 1 PM, but most people just opt out off work and head home after the sermon. So I'm certain that a 4 day working week would hit the ball out of the park with ease.

A no brainer for most businesses: I came in for a volunteer group and we got just as much done in four days as five. When I got into high-rise concrete the Italian crew did a floor in four days, as they wanted three day weekends with their family. We took 5 or 6 days and never saw our family. The divorce stats said it all.

I still work 40 hours, just over 4 days and it has made all the difference. Having three days to unwind after the week makes it possible to actually rest and restore before Monday.

Ive been doing a 4 day work week for about 2 yrs now. I work in the disability sector and my shifts are 12hrs long. I have done a few 3 day weeks before where i went away and took an extra day off, and i really prefer it.

At my current job in Ireland I work 4 days for 11 hours, and then have full 4 days off. To be honest it's a great work/life balance and during the days off you can almost forget you are working.

This is great for people like my staff, who work in marketing mostly, and could easially transition to 4 days week. However some jobs have linear output, and the success of that dept is calculated on working days of the month, with months like april projected to be 10% less due to bank hols. So for some roles, this will never be possible. Also for senior leadership at most companies, where there is still this 1980s culture of an 8 day work week, where emails fly around Sunday at 2am and everyone chips in to be seen as 'on it' - they could say they moved to 4 days, but in reality still crank out 90 hours.
Unfortunately for us shopkeepers, we can't just close the doors for a 3 day weekend.

@@17peteclarke if you think retail businesses can afford to do that in this country then you need to wake up. Plenty of stores in the company I work for don't even make a profit at the moment thanks to cost of living going up, energy bills etc. Why do you think Debenhams went, Woolworths, toys r us, loads of others too. Retail has been hit hard because of the pandemic, Brexit and now the cost of energy, only the supermarkets are raking it in and even some of those are struggling.
The problem with the 8 hours of work. 8 hours for recreation and 8 hours for sleep per day is that work doesn't take a third of your day, once you add up commute/ getting ready for work, etc. your job ends up taking more like 12 hours out of your day.
An extra day off per week would help balance that off.
I think with the advances in AI and automation a four day week seems very plausible..

Although the company I'm interning at doesn't do 4 day week, they allow us to go home early (say take a half-day Friday) or even take the entire Friday off if we put the extra hours in during the other days a week (such as staying a little later on Mondays). They also allow us to work from home anytime we want as long as we notify the boss first and come in once a week (you can work at home full time if you're high up enough on the chain/your work can be completely done remote). It's not as good as a 4-day week I'm sure, but it's pretty darn good for an American company.
I recently started working 4x10’s about 8 months ago and I don’t know if I can ever go back to working 5 days a week again. It’s a game changer. Longer weekends, more time with family and friends or just personal time. The world needs more of this.

I’m self employed and I really like the idea, if everyone worked 4 days, I can do 5 or 6 and get miles ahead of everyone else financially. I have said this tongue in cheek but maybe you can see a potential issue in some industries.

As a hunter gather you would have had about a 50 hour week with lots of rest days, some trivial work and the occasional hunt.
This makes sense.
Even working 12 hours one day and then having the next one free is more effective than working 6 hours every day.

Meanwhile in my country, my first job offer wanted me to work for 10 hours per day for 6 days a week. Plus, they said that sometimes I'll have to work night shifts and come on Sundays as well. The starting salary was equal to USD 100 per month(non-negotiable). The job type was outdoors which meant sweating in blistering sunlight.
I ef'd off that job. Stayed unemployed for a while. But honestly, it's better to be unemployed than being a slave.
We need to fight for our rights. I see too many people willing to do anything for nothing. I told my boss that I'm not willing to work on weekend's and if that's not okay I will move on. I got the job. Now I work 5 days a week when everyone else works 6 or 7 in my country...

I REALLY hope that this is rolled out in the UK or worldwide. But I do wonder if the results are legitimate...Let's just say that if my company trialled this, I would work my ass off for those 6 months and absolutely fudge the my responses to the survey to ensure that I get that 4-day work week!
I feel like that's kind of the point. People will definitely work harder in those four days to prove it can be done. Win win for everyone.
@@guycollishaw1957 Yeah what I mean is that once it's rolled out and it becomes the norm at a company, people sit back and chillout and productivity goes back down again. Anyway, I don't know but it's a possibility.

What you say is the unfortunate reality for most.
Another thing people don't mention is how hard this would be for a lot of professions: e.g. teachers, cashiers, judges, cooks, etc

I would love this, a five day working week is awful. The weekend is gone in a flash and you just about have enough time to get all of the things done you can't in the week. Then you're back in work again.
Canada used to have closed pubs and a lot of other businesses on Sunday. I loved it to catch your breath and do things on a quiet day. Then we went UsA style in the eighties. Time to go back and reboot.

Honestly, on paper I work 5 days a week, but the reality is time worked is closer to 3-4 anyway.
The majority of us in certain industry's with the ability to WFH can and do, do this and I've never been happier.
Additionally from a KPI and measurables perspective, I'm excelling and the business is happy with our fluid work habits.

Maybe the mentality should change too, we need to stop trying to work by deadlines and focus on providing good work without being rushed.
I'm just interested to see if the increases in efficiency remain in the long run. There seem to be general improvements which a company could take but have only changed because of fewer working hours alongside the improvements in staff conditions as a result of the trials. But does the productivity remain high as this turns into the new normal?
I like this trial and hope that it will also happen here in the Philippines.
I know boomers would object that because it's an opportunity cost to make money for themselves, paying minimum wages whilst enjoying their damned money that we worked for. Wish they remember that we also have a family to feed and things that we wanna buy and do in an extended freetime.

It would amazing. Honestly half the stuff we have to do on our days off, we do during the workday anyway because banks, insurance companies, car repair, doctors, etc aren't always available on the weekends. It just makes sense that we'd be more productive if we simply take that away from the workday.

@@Dirtypepants depends on when their 3rd day off is. Common ones are Monday and Wednesday, but others aren't unheard of either.

Someone else be doing the same capacity per day for 6 days straight and before you know it they will dethrone your company.
This is done when quality is prioritised.
Match this with changing consumer expectations, e.g. not expecting call centres to be open on Fridays and this could be very effective/rolled out across the whole country.
Maybe ChatGPT can also alleviate the pressure by acting as a replacement for customer service on the weekends and any other complex issues would just have to wait till next week.
I really hope BC does this by the start of the new year. Having that extra day off would help a lot on finishing some projects I got going on for myself.

I think the first port of call should be to outright ban businesses from opening on Sundays. It's just greed. Ban them opening Boxing day and new years too.

@@firstname4865 you're dead right there, my ex boss wouldn't have given it a thought that we'd been putting up fencing on concrete posts for four days and were knackered, he'd have wanted extra meterage for the same cash. We had to carefully work out how much we did each week so he was making money but we could maintain a rate of work all week, he had no idea about being physically exhausted, he spent his time at a desk.

Just for me, i'm trying to go back into gym but i find it difficult to do so after work as I'm entirely exhausted by the end of the day (i work in a school). If i can get 3 days off i can start really using those days to get healthier. So yes this would have a huge impact
i understand the extreme busyness and tiredness of working in a school so i hope this doesn't come across as insensitive.. however i would like to remind you that even the small bits make a difference! as well as it would be a break, it would be good if you consistently did some light exercise. perhaps 5 minutes when waking, 5 minutes during a break of work and 5 minutes at home. also walk to places when you can. over time, this would make a bit of a difference in your health whether it be mental or physical because of how consistent it was. much luck to your health journey

For a short period, I got to work 10 hour shifts in construction and actually got Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off.
Now, I work "nurse shift" of alternating 12 hour days, and it feels similar aside from working 1 weekend and not the next. 2 days one week, 5 days the next week.
How does it affect construction work?
I can imagine it working for Office work due to mental exhaustion, but physical is different.
@@Ineedgames It actually wasn't bad physically aside from when I was at my heaviest and wearing cheap boots. And the long weekends were amazing.
This was commercial construction, so we were gently loading doors and sheet rock onto pallets and dollies and moving them. Hanging doors and pouring some concrete. We constantly cleaned as we worked, too.
The constant physical work helped me go from 305 lb to 265lb without even trying. Then, I started eating around 1600 calories a day and went from 265 to 170 in about 5 months.
It's the way to a happier and more productive work week. As well as a great work, life balance. I truly believe this. It should have been implemented many decades ago, along with universal basic income, I'm speaking globally. What a huge positive impact it would have made, to the quality of life for so many people in the last many decades.
