Another great project Andy all caught up now just watched this one and the one before, we went away to Norfolk Island for a weeks holiday and 3 days into our holiday the Island was hit by Cyclone Gabrielle so we had to bunker down for about 3 days until it had passed, no power or internet and blowing an absolute gale, not much fun, so doing the catch up on your videos now. I picked a log that was just a little bit wider in diameter than I wanted the diameter of the bird to be so there wasn't much wood to remove... The 1st hole has to go in the centre of the end ... The 2nd hole goes 20mm away from the centre in any direction.. doesn't matter... The face of the bird looks aligned because it faces directly away from the centre of the log... Hi there... This is a great way to try off centre turning... very simple in principle.. although I did mess up my practice piece... Haha.. Yes I do make my own abrasive paste... one part diatomaceous earth.. one part beeswax and 4 parts mineral oil... by weight... Melt the beeswax and mineral oil in a pan ..add diatomaceous earth.. mix thoroughly... keep mixing while it cools down so that the diatomaceous earth doesn't settle to the bottom.. You can cool it faster by holding the pan in cold water...while it is still soft put it into pots... I have never bought any so I don't know how mine compares with them... Hope this helps... Melt the beeswax and mineral oil in a pan ..add diatomaceous earth.. mix thoroughly... keep mixing while it cools down so that the diatomaceous earth doesn't settle to the bottom..
You can cool it faster by holding the pan in cold water...while it is still soft put it into pots...
I have never bought any so I don't know how mine compares with them...

I can't remember if I had done any off centre turning before this...
It was quite easy in the end but I did mess up my practice piece.. Haha..
The wood was fairly dry.. I've had it a while in the workshop.. but didn't test it..
