      Not really when you know all the context. There are only a small number of opportunities to summit in the whole year and climbers tend to base their decision to try summiting based on the decision of other respected climbers so they kind of all go at once on those days. Also, from the last camp to the summit and back takes an entire day so everyone is kinda forced to start at the same time at 2am to make it back before dark.

      There is hardly any mountaineering involved either. It’s a glorified endurance hike that just happens to be stupidly dangerous due to uncontrollable things like avalanches and ice falls…. and now crowds.

      When a human is "brain-addled" from hypoxia, they already have a mindset, an obsessive thought and plan to summit, aka "summit fever" and they can NOT think straight! It's no wonder they make deadly mistakes. A line is a big turn-off for me -- there's no way I would get in a line with other climbers up on an ice-shelf that can break off or collapse under the extra weight of humans!

    • @Kitsune1989
      @Kitsune1989 4 дні тому +2

      When I went up the only thing my sherpas carried were their own gear and the ladder. I carried all my own gear all my oxygen etc. It took me three seperate attempts to summit because I turned back when my sherpas told me to, and I'm not stupid enough to ignore those who do this for a living. I ended up with the same sherpas all three times by request and their agreement because they had done right by me before. Yes, you can hire more then one sherpa. It's just expensive to do. But this was also years ago so it wasn't the money grab it is now. Still expensive. But not unattainable for someone to save up for.
      Did I get some ribbing for not being able to keep up with what was essentially a pair of human mountain goats? Sure, but it was in fun and not meant to be insulting. Also, the fact that I not only listened to them but also ASKED their opinions probaly won me points. And I took them out to a celebration dinner afterwards because I had no mountaineering friends to go up with...or at least none that I would trust my life to on such a notorious mountain.
      Most climbers treat their sherpas with respect. Because they know full well they can't do it alone. But at the same time there are people who are assholes. You can guess which ones get more help when they run into trouble on your own. Yes the sherpas will make an effort regardless, but they are not as determined for those who are playing fuck around find out or being disrespectful.

      It's Everest, people are going to die. We all know that death has been part of the game since Mallory and Irvine. Nobody wants climbers to die but death is inevitable and it's what makes it interesting. It's ridiculous to hear people say that some people don't belong up there. The majority of these deaths had nothing to do with crowds, but it was a mistake the climber made that did themselves in. Even the most renowned Sherpa who in my opinion is the greatest climber ever, died on the mountain and it had nothing to do with crowds or mistakes made by inexperienced climbers.

    How can you call Paterson’s endeavour “selfless”. It was anything but. If he was only concerned with raising money for charity, there are many other ways to do that (as well as contributing the vast cost he incurred in climbing Everest to the Charity). The fact is that people’ egos drive them to do these things, however stupid. Nothing about this is novel, groundbreaking or evidence of any level of climbing skill. Bolting on a fundraising for a charity shouldn’t blind us from the real reasons people climb Everest. None of them reflect well on these tourists.

    The problem with increasing the costs is that only the rich dumbasses that are in it for an ego trip can afford it now. The actual people who have the experience and skills generally dont have the funds for that kind of cost. Because mountain climbing, especially at that level, is fucking expensive if youre doing it properly. Insteadof raising costs they should be putting a qualification system in place. If you cant meet the requirements you arent allowed on the mountain period, regardless of how rich you are. Things like experience level, minimal gear check, previous summitted mountains, etc.
    I did k2 shortly after graduating (after ¾ of my life spent climbing bigger and nastier mountains). I recognize NOW that i probaly shouldnt have been on that mountain. But back then it was about if you could afford the permits and a lot cheaper. I have since done everest. Everest i would say is not that difficult physically BUT it is a very technical climb. A lot of people going up don't have that technical skill. Ive done mountains that were much more physically and mentally chanllenging but arent as well known or popular because they arent the ego trip everest is. Everyone knows everest after all. What everest is, is a highlight to any lack of preperation, a technial climb, and a mental strain. You understand going up that people have died, but its not until you hit your first body that the really, and what it really means, sinks in. If you had any doubts after that you should be turning around. But since its so expensive ppl press on so as not to waste those massive funds (many of wich have been saving for years to get there). Another reason raising permit costs is only going to kill more people.

    I hate crowds on flat earth. If I went to all the trouble ( training, buying gear, $$$$$ etc) to climb Mt Everest and found myself in a crowd at the top with little oxygen and increased risk of safe descent; I would not be happy. These reports are tales of caution. Until there is better regulation of “numbers allowed” on expeditions no one should attempt. Hitting these guide companies in the pocket book may just cause more regulations that put an emphasis on safety.
