Reaction when they tell you they've summited Everest: "..Ok..did you at least bring your trash back with you, rich person?" Reaction when they tell you they've summited K2: No fucking way dude and you're still alive? holy shit
The problem with increasing the costs is that only the rich dumbasses that are in it for an ego trip can afford it now. The actual people who have the experience and skills generally dont have the funds for that kind of cost. Because mountain climbing, especially at that level, is fucking expensive if youre doing it properly. Insteadof raising costs they should be putting a qualification system in place. If you cant meet the requirements you arent allowed on the mountain period, regardless of how rich you are. Things like experience level, minimal gear check, previous summitted mountains, etc. I did k2 shortly after graduating (after ¾ of my life spent climbing bigger and nastier mountains). I recognize NOW that i probaly shouldnt have been on that mountain. But back then it was about if you could afford the permits and a lot cheaper. I have since done everest. Everest i would say is not that difficult physically BUT it is a very technical climb. A lot of people going up don't have that technical skill. Ive done mountains that were much more physically and mentally chanllenging but arent as well known or popular because they arent the ego trip everest is. Everyone knows everest after all. What everest is, is a highlight to any lack of preperation, a technial climb, and a mental strain. You understand going up that people have died, but its not until you hit your first body that the really, and what it really means, sinks in. If you had any doubts after that you should be turning around. But since its so expensive ppl press on so as not to waste those massive funds (many of wich have been saving for years to get there). Another reason raising permit costs is only going to kill more people.
When I see images of Everest I think... There's a place I NEVER want to go. Some look at it and feel a NEED to go... What's up there, minimal oxygen, cold, snow/ice, a view and most likely the grim reaper. I will look at images of the view and be quite happy thanks. Different mindsets I guess but to me life is short enough and too precious.
I almost died the other day going off trails in the mountains. I rerouted 4 different times after reaching dangerous points and had to back track. I had to do a lot of scary rock climbing. Where if I messed up I would die. No ropes, And I thank these videos for knocking sense into me for knowing when to know MY limits. I was like NOPE

80 G's!! Can you imagine the vacation you could take almost anywhere else in the world for that much? Yet, here you are, waiting in a line on the top of Everest.
I hate crowds on flat earth. If I went to all the trouble ( training, buying gear, $$$$$ etc) to climb Mt Everest and found myself in a crowd at the top with little oxygen and increased risk of safe descent; I would not be happy. These reports are tales of caution. Until there is better regulation of “numbers allowed” on expeditions no one should attempt. I just can't believe the Lines of people above the last base camp they need to shut this crap down nobody needs to climb Mount Everest .

There's nothing "selfless" about climbing Everest
Ski down Everest? What could possibly go wrong?
@AnthonyWilliams-ew3wp one small thing, apparently.
No reason to bring, let's say, a backup binding? What could possibly go wrong indeed.
@Sam-hf8nq "Well, it's never failed yet" SMH. :)

saying Paterson's journey was selfless is absurd
He can say he did it for a family with cancer but that’s BS. Doing something to stroke your own ego isn’t healing any cancer.
Yea i rolled my eyes at that. If everybody on everest was climbing to fight cancer we would have a cure already
Used to be if you wanted to illustrate a feat or task as being difficult, you'd compare it to climbing Mt Everest. Now you see these pictures and videos of the crowded mountain and it makes it seem less impressive. Don't get me wrong, I know that it's still a grueling and dangerous feat to achieve, just maybe not as exclusive a feat anymore.
Agreed. Looked like a line for a Disney ride. Not an adventure but a tourist spot

No one ever talks about the millions of pounds of garbage these so called climbers who love the mountain so much that they leave behind every trace of themselves by leaving millions of pounds of garbage behind I’m more emotional over that than I have respect for any climbers the mountains have become a landfill
That's disgusting. I wish your comment was more popular so people would actually read it. Ughh
And now their bags of poop are melting and running into the water supply.
They spend a lot of money to basically commit suicide with skis... anyone should know just looking at that section, that attempting to ski down it will most likely result in death... that snowboarder should've known better too...
Looks like they are in line to get on a roller coaster! 😂
Actually a roller coaster to descend would be a great idea.
When people chose dangerous past times, it seems silly to be surprised or call it a "tragedy" when they make a mistake and die. As for waiting in line to summit Everest... hardly seems worth doing it when huge crowds are doing it too.
1:20 geez, the line is so long you could swear it’s a line to get into the football game
Imagine going all that way and on the precipice of death…then having to wait in a line of 50 climbers for the last 100 feet. Damn.
Translation: "Paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to risk your life climbing a 36,000+ ft mountain is STUPID & selfish."
"Bottleneck of stupidity" it could also be called.
Imagine doing squats for 8 hours and then try to sit in a controlled seated position like sitting on the toilet and see what happens to your legs. That’s how your legs are coming down from the top. Shaky and give out at any moment
mine felt like that the day after skiing arapahoe basin last winter lol
From what I learned watching these Everest docs are on the way down they usually are out of O2 and there brains start slowly shutting down along with their motor functions or severely frost bitten and your limbs are literally frozen from the outside in.
Heck, I climbed the mountain in Aspen CO 10705 elev. one summer, and the walk down the road damn near killed me. Should have trained for it. Of course that might be due to 48 hours earlier I was in Indiana, elev. 600 feet above sea level.😁
So?
NO REGREEeeeeeeeets.
Yep. Hard to regret after you die.
😂
Splat!
How can you call Paterson’s endeavour “selfless”. It was anything but. If he was only concerned with raising money for charity, there are many other ways to do that (as well as contributing the vast cost he incurred in climbing Everest to the Charity). The fact is that people’ egos drive them to do these things, however stupid. Nothing about this is novel, groundbreaking or evidence of any level of climbing skill. Bolting on a fundraising for a charity shouldn’t blind us from the real reasons people climb Everest. None of them reflect well on these tourists.
I paid for my mother-in-law to go up on Everest... it's been her dream and mine. 🙂
Did she make it? But one has to wonder with all these yuppies that jog in groups and never shut up while doing it (means they are not running hard enough). Do they still yap while ascending Everest?

Perspective. We can spin anything
I'm so scared of heights, stepping off a curb can give me vertigo. You'll never find me climbing a mountain.
I’m an amateur climber.. I used to climb all the time.. but even “easy”. Mountains are hard climbs.. you can die at one misstep on those..
I can't name one person who has made it to the top of Mount Everest. And if someone told me they did it would be more impressive to hear you know algebra

Lines of people on top of Everest is one of humanity's most stupid achievements.
Nepal needs to stop giving away so many permits! They are getting so greedy.

Mountain climbers falling off mountains don't amount to a disaster, merely a misfortune...

Climbing dangerous mountains is simply a suicide, these climbers not only putting their lives at risk but also they are destroying nature, we must condemn their actions.
Understand this is people daring their safety, and lost. This is no different than sky diving, bungee jumping, big wave riding.
People knowing put themselves in this situation. I feel bad but you did voluntarily sign up and do these activities knowing the risks.
Exactly. If instead of going to therapy and understanding, why you are dependant on adrenaline, which is not healthy, you decide to do cave diving, climb ecc. - you are asking for that
Im pretty sure there are ways of raising money that don't require climbing deadly, overcrowded mountain, that costs 50 000$ for an expedition anyways. Why can't you just add that 50k to the pool, and do some happening to raise money?
You don't fall off of a mountain. You fall down the mountain. To fall off of something means you are no longer on it when you land.

The Nepal government must step in and take a serious action. These tragedies also costs Sherpa's lifes.

It’s more crowded than a line at the movies or waiting for a bus.
Imagine spending 100 thousand Dollars Only to freeze and die---Horribly!
Don't forget the dead bodies of other climbers that you actually have to step on.
Mount Everest isn't dangerous - its the queue of climbers that makes it a death zone!
Traffic jams in that environment? Shame on everyone who overlooks that obvious problem. Maybe someone should regulate how many go at a time?
Traffic jams on Mt. Everest? Ridiculous.

Hitting these guide companies in the pocket book may just cause more regulations that put an emphasis on safety.
