I think Metalworker's current unplayable status has just as much or even more to do with a metagame shift toward creature decks than it does with power creep. Last time I sleeved him up for a big tournament, main deck creature removal wasn't terribly common. Lightning Bolt was a thing, as was the occasional Swords. But the odds of your opponent not having creature interaction in their top 10 cards was fairly high.
Metalworker takes me back. My first FLGS, playing Legacy in the basement for the low cost of buying a random pack that we serpentine drafted through once rankings were finalized after swiss rounds. Good memories.
I think people get this confused because you can give your creatures the planeswalker abilities of Grist forgetting that Grist is a creature in any zone except the battlefield.
@@tsimehcMTG yeah that definitely adds to the confusion. i’ve also seen modern yawg players assuming shifting woodlands works the same way and copy it in the yard just for it to die due to SBAs
@@seanokuyama-smith4166 It took me a minute to think through this - mostly because I don't play Yawg, but Woodlands targets Grist in yard. Sees it as a 1/1 insect in the yard, becomes said PW because it is now on the BF but dies to state based actions because it has zero loyalty counters on it (since it did not ETB as a PW). I love looking at lines like this - give my old man brain more wrinkles.
@thrabenU I am the pilot of the MUD deck from back in the day that won a Legacy SCG Open. Forgemaster MUD. SCG Memphis. My favorite memory from Magic included t2 Blightsteel with Haste on Camera.
I played this today it was super fun using metalworker. Soul cauldron keeps it going through removal, which is constant. On the fence about investing in metalworkers!
I've been playing emry on arena (historic)brawl. I love Marvin, Murderous Mimic in that deck. It is just such a powerhouse and I'm sure I'm not even close to exploiting Marvin correctly yet.
Ah, Metal Worker. Every time I watch vintage cube with metal worker they'd wish it would be picked. Unlike Goblin Welder, worker costs too much and had summoning sickness. Even if it had haste it would likely be too weak. If it cost two and had haste that starts sounding pretty good imo.
is there a reason that you dont mention the frog untuil 2 min in? Or is it a joke along the lines of "not being allowed to swear in the start of a video"
Why are we running staff as an untap piece rather than keys? Do we actually care about the staff's other modes? Seems like opening up other artifact mana pieces (monolith?) has merit.
Phil can you stop playing these dogshit "well the main plan failed before the game started so let's hope for urza's saga to carry" decks? They are so god damn boring to watch. Every single time it's "my game plan takes 5 different cards to untap with and that's too slow so let's Mulligan to urza saga" and then you lose because your opponent plays a deck with an actual game plan.

I mean that's power creep. The metagame didn't suddenly shift to 4 erhnam djinn, more powerful creatures were printed.

just an fyi in round 2 game 1 you talk about giving your creatures staff of domination's abilities but it only gives abilities of creatures

I play hardened scales in modern (and play cauldron weekly) and was yelling at him for this lol

As an OG MUD player, this makes me happy :)
Mike! I remember testing this deck with you when I was in college before your SCG win
@@swimfast4 hell yeah, that deck was super fun
@@MichaelBomholtI still miss the days of jamming MUD
At 57:39 you can just play Ballista for 0 then play Cauldron to exile it.
I would probably do the same and get rid of eldrazi asap
I really apreciate the mentions of which rounds are likely the most exciting, really helps when watching on my lunch break!
Ancient tomb urza’s saga keep is the stompy player’s island ponder keep
Psychic Frog Counter!

I LOVE Metalworker. I am living
@thrabenU I am the pilot of the MUD deck from back in the day that won a Legacy SCG Open. Forgemaster MUD. SCG Memphis. My favorite memory from Magic included t2 Blightsteel with Haste on Camera.
i was thinking about metalworker the other day, let's goooo
Hey GG! Its an honor to be in a VOD sir!
Psychic Frog is so fun to play against in every single Legacy league. Thanks WoTC play testers! 🥰🎉
Future phil is such a great guy. Cleaning up after the cats and letting us know which rounds to watch. ❤
Ooof! I feel personally attacked by that intro.
I played this today it was super fun using metalworker. Soul cauldron keeps it going through removal, which is constant. On the fence about investing in metalworkers!
now this is the kinda deck i want to see
Even post ban this is making me want to build that mono blue artifact deck in EDH.
This is basically my Karn silver golem edh deck lol
Patchwork is so underrated especially in affinity
7:12 wait, your round one opponent just happened to be the creator of the list you are playing? what's the odds of that, damn! 🤓
Wow, what are the odds that the list you pulled was really R1s version. Insane
Never clicked on a video faster in my life

17:50 That hand do what????
havent watched through the deck tech yet but stonecoil blocking psychic frog for free seems sweet!
edit: called it
Just feels like a weird Hardened Scales deck without Hardened Scales.
How did decks like this work in ye old days before walking ballista
Round 2, Metalwork makes mana, so you can indeed do Saga stuff after playing a metalworker.

I think if it had haste it would be good
I remember when metalworker was a solid vintage cube draft card. Now the little guy isnt even in cubes anymore 😭
I have a metalworker playmat and it's probably my favourite art ever even if the card isn't the best 😅
U could replace the metal worker with steel overseer
Deranged take but this deck could use a hecking Cavern of souls on CONSTRUCT
Oh man metalworker my favorite artifact buddy and with staff? Magic is starting to heal...what's next wotc releases an upgraded smokestax?
Welp guess I'm a magic boomer then
is there a reason that you dont mention the frog untuil 2 min in?
Or is it a joke along the lines of "not being allowed to swear in the start of a video"
Frog is a four letter word after all.
tap metalworker play wormcoil :D
Boomers unite (I'm 27)
