This song was recorded in a very small room in Birmingham, so small that the drummer Norman Hassan recorded his percussion in the garden. That's why one can hear the birds singing in the background on some of the album tracks. .

Love this haunting song. When it came out, I was 13. Now I read the lyrics with my 56 year old eyes - wow. How deeply insightful.
Wow! I must have been 7 then. Bloody great tune! The 70s seemed like a hard time not that long ago. From 2023 it now looks like it was the best and simplest time of our lives.

Despite all the great stuff UB40 did, I still feel their first album was their best, and Ivory Madonna right up with their very best
Those first two albums were supreme. They will be forever. Even though they let themselves down a little after, you cannot listen to those first two albums & say THAT UB40 weren’t very good. THAT UB40 were simply outstanding.
@@davidbeeson9408 after posting that over a year ago, I spent the next few weeks listening to the UB40 back catelogue from Signing Off to Guns in the Ghetto, plus the Dub albums.
While I still think 'Signing Off' is the best album, there is so much good stuff in all of the albums.
'That UB40' were outstanding, right through late 70s to end of the 90s.
@@JakobusVdL Whatever you say mate. I’ve got all their albums on vinyl, up to 1991, have had them for years. Labour of love 1 & 2 are both cover albums, just cover versions. Every song. And Signing Off & Present Arms are STILL their best two albums. By a long way.

@@JakobusVdL Yeah, Labour of love 1 & 2 were Cover albums. Full of classics, well 1 definitely was yeah but 2 not so much. What I mean by “just” cover albums is they have ZERO original material on them. They’re “JUST” cover albums. And I’m not enjoying UB40 so much, like I say, after those first two albums they’re a bit bland for me. Especially when I have albums by Sound Dimension, Freddie McKay, Cedric Brooks, Jackie Mittoo, Burning Spear, Pablo Black & other real Top Jamaican artists to be listening to. Only Signing Off & Present Arms comes close. All the best for 2024. 🙏🏼

I unfortunately can't help but say slightly off lyrics for fun. Blame my older sisters who would tease me with classics like Lucille "you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille... 400 children and a crop in the field" . He had 4 hungry children but I was 30 before I found that one out..
