In 1984 I watched the pre release reviews and hype in this joint. I was on it! March of 1985 I received this for my frickin birthday! I was the coolest kid on the school bus. Playing fart and burp sounds soon evolving into actual expressive music and my first solo project was born. It was called Timistry and it was me just beat box drum sampling into the microphone and creating tunes man!
@@DyReckProductions I really appreciate that! You nailed it though.. the SK-1 was a gateway into pro music production. It helped to unlock the process and showed a generation some dope stuff was possible. As for cartoons.. the 80s gave us Ren and Stimpy. Need I say no more..

Only a year later in 1981 the Casio Casiotone MT-40 would be release. Then in 1985 the Sleng Teng Riddim made entirely from a Casio MT-40 changed the sound of Reggae and Dancehall forever. These keyboards did a lot at the time not just as toys or learning tools, they seriously affected music production capabilities. We are so spoiled today with what technology can do while still being affordable.
This machine started it all for almost every future beatmaker in the projects, yes I wrote that because that is where I'm from, oh yes the commercials, you forgot Sally Struthers and the Africa hustle. Lol Bossa Nova early Trap music sound lol
YOOOOO!!! I didn't expect this one video to come to fruition, Dyreck! I remember getting one around 1987, and this was my very first introduction to sampling (I do remember the commercial for it too.). The only thing was that mine didn't come with an instruction manual. 😞😞😞But I definitely tried to make the most of it though. The only thing is that because of the extremely short sample time, you had to sample your loops from cassette by playing them on "high speed" and pausing the beat just before your sample so you knew where to start when activating the sampling recording process. Of course it was primitive sounding, but at the time it was fun. I still have some of those loops and things I made back then on cassette. Such memories, indeed. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 To this day...I still have my Casio Sk-1, but a lot of the key are missing from being broken off over the years. I do want to get another one for nostalgia.

LMAO when he mentioned "bossa nova" -- i said it before he did...got one in high school. played it OUT. used to put the 33 on 45, and get more sampling time
A lot of that stuff carried over to the 90s I was grateful enough to experience those cartoons and commercials that you speak a brother they made up who we were has children and they made up our personalities of who we are today as people the last of the real true people who enjoy life or what it was
The first thing my cousin and I sampled on the Casio was Brass Monkey by the Beastie boys - he got the keyboard for Christmas that year.. - I don't even know if we understood that was sample based music to begin with - by the next year I was saving up for an Atari 1040ST
I got this for Christmas age 5, 1985. It came with a cassette to sample. The cassette had the exact same laughing sound that camron uses on a lot songs. WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!!!!!
Man you sound so hype - just like you're time traveler from 80s 😂 You totally made my day by giving me a smile 👍 It's like we're stripped of hope and that little spark of wonder nowadays 😢
Wow you took me back with the commercials, especially being from NY. I had the SK-1 when I was young. A friend of mine ended up giving me his because he was more into his G.I. Joe's. I later replaced it with a Casio SK-5. That was next level for me. You should do a video on that next. I nowadays have the Radio Shack version of the SK-1, the Concertmate 500 and a new, old stock SK-5.
@DyReck Productions Yes sir. I had bought them all over again.I remember I was happy to get the SK-5 because in an interview I saw on TV (maybe Video Music Box back in the day) with De La Soul, they mentioned that they used the SK-5 on their 3 Feet & Rising album. They showed it off in their studio. Would be nice to find that interview.
Hey Dyreck Ive watch a good chunk of your vids love your research and I love how you make your videos fun and educational! Idk if you have done it but you should do the Roland R8 and the Yamaha Su700!
In the mid 80s, everyone I know including me had a SK-1. We use to use the sampler to make prank calls. I actually still have some of those tapes. And we used to play records as fast as we could and sample it then slow it down to regular speed and play loops and used two tape recorders to multi track. I made my 1st songs with the SK-1.
My first setup SK5 and a double tape deck cats dont know how many early hip hop classics were made on these joints De La Soul did some of their first joints this a SP12 and a S900
