  • Our first Ambush mission! I really enjoyed this one.
    I am really sorry about the sound quality, I am struggling with getting my new recording space to be less echoey. I have some plans I am going to try and change things up over the weekend.

    13:46 you accidentally use a flashbang instead of a smoke. That why it didn’t work.

      Wow, I feel so stupid. Clearly this was an operator error by a panicked soldier on the ground and not my fault at all.

    My thoughts on how to prioritize Funding, from top to bottom:
    -New Base: the faster new bases are set up, with Radars and Interceptors, the faster UFOs can shot down, which both adds to resource rates, and slows the rate of Panic. I would recommend somewhere that will cover lots of land, so either Asia or North America, and caution away from places with a lot of ocean, like Central America or Oceania; the reason being that shooting a UFO over water basically wastes it, and there is a non-0 chance that even if one gets spotted it won't ever go over land (also there is also a non-0 chance you will forget to tell your Interceptors to Tail Until Over Land at least once).
    -Troop Gear: As others have noted focusing on weapons is the better bet, enemies can't hurt you if they are dead. However this is a little bit of a moot point, as the bottleneck is Alien Alloys, now money.
    -Adding Radar Number 3 to Bastion Base: the little bit of extra coverage can let you respond to UFOs that you'd otherwise have to hope wanders into range, as well as wait for it to do so, giving it more time to cause Panic, as well as letting you respond to ones slightly further out slightly faster.
    -Second Interceptor as Bastion: I'd say this should be a Low Priority for now, you are currently taking out Drones while only taking superficial damage, a second Interceptor would be overkill and you don't need to swap between them as it would take about a dozen Drones one after the other to threaten you Angels, never minding the fact that there is enough time between attack to repair the already very minor damage. Once actual threats start showing up maybe then consider grabbing the wingman.
    -Accelerated Cannon: see above, you are already mulching Drones, until threats that require heavier firepower appear you aren't really getting much return on investment.
    One other thing to bring up: how do the stats on the Stun Gun compare to basic Pistols? Because if they both have the same terrible range it might still be an idea to make a few Stun Guns as Sidearms, or, at the very least, prioritize them above Accelerated Pistols.

      Stun gun range is 6 tiles, electroshock pistol is 2 more, and electroshock rifle is another 2, leaving the rifle at 2 below the same range as a normal pistol. The gun is useless, and the electroshock use too many alloys for how much you use them to be worth it. Batons and electroshock grenades all the way.

    I really like the Ambush mission. Like usually the game is about getting small advantages wherever you can. A mission where you can 'stack the deck' and go crazy in one turn is fun.

      I get the impression that starting those ambushes with a couple flashbangs would go a long way towards neutralising the enemy return fire.

      Yeah... especially if you throw FB instead of smoke lol...
      I just mean, all these 'tactical' games usually have you fighting for every small advantage and taking unknown amounts of risk. Having a map which is just "Have fun" is a welcome reprieve.

    For the ambush especially, carrying one extra (smoke) grenade seems like a great idea. Especially since you are planning on blanketing the area in smoke to begin with.

    For the new base financially North America is one of your biggest contributors but strategically in range of your two airplanes a level two radar base in Russia or a level 3 radar base in Australia as they are both in range of Air Strike capability at this time, if you build a base in North America you will have to find money for two more planes and troops and the skyhawk.

    The new base should be near the top of the priorities. I'm not convinced you should get a radar at your current base at all right now. It already has great coverage of Africa & adequate coverage of Europe. Spending to get near perfect coverage of someplace you are already somewhat protecting doesn't help you as much as getting 'good enough' protection in all of the six panic regions.

    27:05 going for a base is good but if you do. keep in mind you need sentry turrets and other interceptor (do it when sectons and lizards start showing up a lot) . i do think it's better than another radar but it will cost a lot. so the moment we get few aliens only missions. get the sentry turrets and soldier quarter to protect the other base (better safe than sorry) also i feel we about to enter the next phase of the game where our current equipment will become obsolete (if we fight hazmat suit cleaners. then it ok for a time)

    I agree with those who are saying base, you have good cover where you are, likely a UFO will trip your radar even if initially out of range. With the US being a top financier, it is only good business to start with them, lol. It also gives you potentially global interceptor coverage with the fuel tanks while you work towards more bases, along with another place to stage a strike team. Not sure I would ever get that 3rd radar array until you have at least 3 or 4 bases. Yes it expands your current range but a base gives you that first dose of massive coverage, better bang for the buck so to speak. Awesome series, great to get a feel for this before I pick it up.

    (note i do not own the game nor am very much op to date, so i might miss something) as a reaction on researching weapons before armor, I fully agree that frontloading damage and killing aliens is more effective than better armor espacially when soldier get reduced stats when wounded. My question is however: how much does mag weapons make a difference does it kill aliens significanlty quicker. in xcom (the damage spike from convential weapons to laser/mag etc is huge (3-5 to 5-7 or 4-6 in long war) but here that difference is far less (34 damage, 0 penetration to 38 damage and 5 penetration). Warden armor on the other hand upgrades the armor significantly (12 to 20 armor hp, 0 to 5 hardness, 20 to 12 weight and -5 to -3 accuracy) while in xcom it gives soldiers a significant hp boosts but it doesn't make them tanky in the slightest. In this game a soldier can reasonably expect to take 1 or 2 shots and perhaps more. This means that warden armor can amplify this even more. in short, is the slight damage increase worth the significant defence upgrade, including the increase in accuracy which in turn means more damage?

    I've learned pretty quickly how to cheese these ambush missions: Everybody gets a shotgun and deploys as close to the suitdudes as possible. That means I can almost reliably kill at least two enemies with all each of my eight troopers.

    For my builds with weapon upgrades, rifles and pistols get kinetic weapons,(Accelerated, Gauss), while snipers,mg's, and shotguns get energy weapons. The main reason for this is rifle and pistol benefit the greatest from kinetic weapons, while the other three benefit the greatest from energy weapons, while suffering the least from the downsides. I still keep the laser mg though, as the armour shredding is just too good to give up.

    Baton is generally better than stun guns yeah, but the 6 tile range gives you the option to attempt a capture from cover, which can be important occasionally! You trade some measure of safety for higher chances of successfully stunning with the batons (Higher stun, no miss chance)

      also batons are heavier than stun guns. (take a look). using stun gun, allows you to priorize carry with more grenade or heavy armoring.

    The campaign is really exiciting. The thrill of not knowing if a mission is succes or failure is awesome. Additionally the commentary on strategy is intresting. You really think how would i do it makes really connect with the battles. As if we share the mission together. This game could be awesome if it was a lifestream there you activaly try to help like many rts games I watch mainly aoe2. But this game is really small so it could be hard to get it going. Great work commander.

    I dont know what your other viewers think, but personally I don't see much value in a third radar array. Generally spotting UFO's hasn't really been an issue for me. Having enough planes to go shoot them down is though. But that might just be my preference.

    Given your ability to (roughly) track UFOs through the news reports on the map, I'd argue that having two fighters might let you A) fight the air war better when real UFOs show up and B) hit UFOs all over the world by using both fighters to hunt them down tracking the ship strafing reports and missing cows and things.
    If that doesn't actually work, then you can probably grab the radar and then just make sure you've got more planes by the time scary enemy aircraft actually show up

      Well, now you can do both. I think getting a second base up as soon as possible is good, since the setup time is so long. It's something you'll be slowly adding to over the course of months, and getting that process started soon seems wise

    glad to see more mission types. i will not lie milestone 1-2 kinda got bit boring because every mission played similarly. i welcome this new mission type. it cement the fact you are the superior force on earth. until you eat your pride after the true enemy show up and serve you some humble pie.

      yup (fish in barrel remark). That is the hint = AMBUSH. I don't bother with cover. move all shotgun soldiers up close (avoiding obstacles, including those fences), shoot with snapshot aim (more shots to shoot, and being close gives higher accuracy). Some of the cleaner arrangement makes strategizing almost difficult resorting to need for 1 or 2 rifle soldiers for range shots with flashbangs, no smoke. Take look at cleaner's eyes-body position because can not overwatch behind their heads This mean strategizing rolling shots (1st, 2nd 3rd etc). In my head 6 shotguns, 2 shot kills = 12 cleaners dead. Some position might afford 3rd exploitable accurate snapshot shotgun kill.

    23:09 I am teem *interceptor*. in game of shield sword and sight. you don't want to be underpowered. especially when your sight is not bad.
    but a better argument can be made for *radar*. the ability to stop those weak alien drones to make sure the panic stay as low as possible is better. especially that one interceptor is more than capable of taking them on.
    My final verdict: Radar.
    Side note: maybe next month get the interceptor. we want to keep our aerial superiority for so long to make sure no unnecessary panic is generated.

    I am shocked that ambush mission went as well as it did! By all rights there should have been some casualties but we really lucked out.
    Might be important to have a base dedicated just to money-making, so you can more effectively kit out the troops and get the big upgrades later on when you get access to them instead of having to wait til month's end.

    Really love this update but the combat still bothers me. Every battle is a check of did you bring enough flashbangs.
