Ashton Womack Great video. I too switched from an IPhone to a Nokia. I have the Nokia 7.2 which is a great phone. Great price, even came with a headphone jack, head phones and a clear phone case. IPhones are very expensive and give you nothing for your money. The budget phones give you a lot more out of the box for a much cheaper price.

I'm a programmer and a tech savvy and one think of my job is always being connected to social media and job apps. It got to the point that I was coding from my Iphone 14 pro at 2am and checking all of my social media at the same time. I decided to pull the plug one day when my wife and I where sitting down in the living room and we where both in our smart-phones meanwhile our 3 year old daughter was playing alone enjoying every single moment and us loosing out on her happiness, I felt disgusted knowing that I was missing out from my daughter's most valuable moments and I said enough is enough! Every since I have been using a dumb phone Nokia 6300 and have only been working from my laptop going to 4 months and I feel great with no worries, no stress, no headaches and the most important I get to spent more quality time with my family.

I was born in the 80s and raised in the 90s and let me tell you the 90s was the best time to be a kid. We had no phones. If we went somewhere we called from a wall phone or pay phone. Less stress less anxiety and had more fun. I just purchased this phone. And T9 is my favorite way of text. Don’t even have to look at the phone

Yes I totally agree! I was born in late 70s and my dad escaped from communist Romania in 1985 and the rest of the family was able to come to the US in 1987, and I look back to the 90s and I think there were no problems and life was so good, we definately didn't and yes we used to call our parents via a line phone lol. We enjoyed life in the 90s especially since we had no freedoms in Romania and we were persecuted because we are Christians. So when we came here we were free, we were happy and life was good. What's going on in the world these days makes me so sad because it reminds me of my childhood back in Romania.

@@ashtonwomack I bought a Motorola razr v3x back in 2006, the Era where smartphones were nowhere to be found. The razr at this time was an amazing device which had the essential functions like a built in music player, a micro sd card slot and a headphone jack. Even in a feature phone today, I still look for these 3 criterias
Even if I own a couple of android smartphones, I still use the basic of a feature phones which is the built-in music player. I don't install social media and 3d games on my smartphones because they're too intrusive and they feed too much on the battery.

I was at high school when dumbphones were just coming out, was 18 when the first iphone came out and looking at some youngsters today, I am so glad I was not young when this influx of technology was introduced. first smartphone was samsung S3 when i was 23. 11 years later I am done with smartphones. It is time to be present. Just to put things in perspective, I am not on any social media and don't spend much time on the phone compared to most people. But, it still feel that so much time can be wasted, I don't want the option anymore.
Also, in terms of directions, the old fashioned technique of asking someone is a go. society is becoming so isolated and the act of interacting with others/strangers is almost revolting to people that are too comfy in their bubble. just bought nokia 800 tough, but thinking of switching it out to the 225 to go whole hog, dumbphone.
Great to see youngsters like yourself realising there is more to life. Much love from the UK.

great video. I'm on week 3 of using a flip phone (coming from an iPhone 13 Pro Max) and it's been great. The first few days were tough; trying to break that habit of having my phone and carrying it everywhere. I used my phone for photos a lot, so I went through the same thing, of missing the convenience of snapping a photo. But honestly, you really are more present. You actually interact with the people you're spending time with instead of being the camera crew that's documenting life as it's happening. I've kept my phone locked away and have only used it once to take a photo of a check to deposit. Other than that, it'll stay in there for a while. I don't see me going back. There is something peaceful about having connectivity via texts and phone calls, but not being available to everyone for every second of the day. I can see how it contributes to a lot of social anxiety for people.

I agree with you! I'm planning on switching to a flip, as soon as I get the money for one, and I'm super excited. For reference, I'm currently 13. To solve the photo problem, because I love to document outings with my friends, I've gotten an old 35mm film camera from the 90s. I can carry it around and snap pictures, without the added anxiety of the cell and what not of a cell

I've been feeling this way for some time too. I work in a high school and just see how damaging social media and these modern electronics are. I literally said "I've had enough of this crap" to my iPhone 13 pro. I really only bought it for the quality of the screen refresh rate, the camera, and the recording possibilities because it has outstanding audio quality--I'm a pianist and record a lot of music. I just bought the Nokia 6300 4g and it was literally $70 and it is super basic, just like your phone! I love the old style of texting, and just how simple the OS is on it. I feel better not having the constant 'void' as you call it through my iPhone. My partner is constantly on his phone and says that he wants to do this break too.. but he's having trouble with making the switch. I love this new revolution of dumb phones! There is nothing more depressing than seeing a group of people out, say in a cafe, and they're all glued to their iPhones or whatever. I'm old enough to remember the pre-mobile phone era, and it shows how distracted we've become, constantly checking apps. I have considered doing this myself. One suggestion for those who want a QWERTY keyboard or touch but want a dumb phone: get a windows phone.
Windows phones are no longer supported. Nearly all major apps like Snapchat, Facebook, google apps have all shut down and pulled off the platform. So, you get a dumb touch screen phone that has a browser, built in Microsoft apps like office and utilities, and that's about it. Windows phones make good dumb phone alternatives. With no app support, you aren't distracted, but you get a good keyboard for texting.

I think that you made the best video about this subject, Ashton. Really, you have explained everything in a so understanding manner. Smartphones are tricky devices of nowdays. They can help in some way, but in the other hand, they do take a lot of time that could be used in better way. I ballance between my Alcatel 3025X (a good old flip phone) and my Samsung Galaxy A7 2018. In some work related issues smartphone could be an it is handy. But again, we do lived before the smartphone era and we still managed to do our job perfectly. You're right, there is to much distraction with smartphones today. When I go out, I see people glued to their screens. That's bad. And I won't mention the tracking issues and all the propaganda that comes with it. Photography is my free time thing, so smartphone is handy there. But just as you have said; we have to go back to old school; carrying the camera, the real one. In a lot of cases, a real camera lense still beats the smartphone camera lense. I know you will understand this. Thank you indeed for this video. I enjoyed every minute of it. Great Video.
I am old OLD School and have no patience to spend my days in front of a mini-screen even though there are advantages of keeping up and using all there is to use on Smartphones.
The thing I like about dumb phones of this size is just how convenient they are to pop in a pocket and do physical work....something I do most of the daylight hours of the day.
I once had a loan of a larger dumb phone and was continually activating 'something or other' feature when I bumped it or bent over or down.
I see people with expensive Smart Phones protruding from their back pockets [great for pickpockets] and almost falling out at every step or bend.
Additionally the cheap price means that any accidents are not the end of the World...I recently accidentally immersed my previous Nokia in laundry water for at least 5 minutes before realizing but when I removed it, separated parts, popped into a container of rice for a few hours it came back to life.

So I had my 20's in the 90's and it was amazing and I knew what was being stolen from us with smartphones. I ditched my smartphone about 6 weeks ago and I've no temptation to going back. I came here through a google search to see if there was a touchscreen dumbphone with no internet....seemingly not. The texting is the biggest drawback, still not tempted to go back. I have to have an old smartphone at the house to link with laptop for whatsapp every two weeks, they don't let go too easily. I am amazed at when I'm in a waiting room, on a train or even just visiting, just how much others are dependent on their phones and it frightens me too much to go back. Take the plunge people, it is worth it.

I commend you for using a dumb phone for 30 days. I'm 40 so I remember how it was before smartphones existed but honestly I don't think I could ever go back to using a dumb phone ever again. its just way too convenient to have the smart phone.

I’m a similar age but am now thinking of getting an iPad mini for apps that are useful (banking, emails, Spotify, UA-cam, boarding passes etc) but using a burner phone for daily driving.
Not sure it will work but the good thing is it’s cheap enough to try and if it doesn’t work I can get myself an iPhone 14 for Christmas 😄

I never did the switch from dumb to smart (!) as I initially couldn't figure out what the phone could do better than my PC, with the exception of GPS/maps (and I already had a Garmin outdoor GPS). Subsequently having to hear "why don't you get a smartphone to better see your calendar and mail" almost every day, I realized I had done the right thing. Today I have developed a persona as the stubborn one that you can't reach/book easily. I doubt I will ever do the dumb-to-smart switch, that would be a dumb thing to do in my case.

I am so thankful for people like you. I'm thinking about doing this, realizing that I'm watching my phone more than my kids. I'm mostly struggling with the camera dilemma though. I life far from my family and document a lot of my kids' lives for them. It's the only part of my phone that brings me joy and my camera quality is excellent. How do you balance having a dumb phone but wanting to record special moments? I can buy a nice Canon but the bulk is ridiculous on top of a diaper bag, purse, babies, etc. It's too much to carry Around. I'm at a loss for ideas.

Thank you for the insightful video, Ashton. It popped up on my YT recommended list after several searches for a dumb phone to replace my aging Moto G5+ (Android 8). I've had it for 3 years and every tweak I've made to it has been to lobotomize it - such that it only does phone calls, texts, and emails. The number of times some intrusive Android or App update has installed and turned on in opposition to my wish for privacy, are too many to count. I'm always turning off invasive permissions. Realistically - the one application I have and use regularly on a smart phone, is for navigating security cameras when I'm away from home. And the only reason I need that is because the android app was far easier to set up, than setting up port forwarding on my home router and in individual camera settings so I could monitor the cameras with a PC and web browser. Oh, and I play solitaire when my wife is in JoAnne Fabrics. ;^) Thanks for the words of wisdom "if you didn't buy the product, you are the product" - so smart and succinct. Blessings to you!

Great video, nicely put points. I specially agree with what you mentioned about "being present in the PRESENT". I, too, like dumb phones because they're so simple to work with. Easy peasy, no distractions with it.
Unfortunately, I can't completely cut my smartphone out of my life (because I depend on its basic workplace functionalities, like email, powerpoint, word, calculator + its scientific option, and its camera). Aside from that, I need to use WhatsApp, Facebook, UA-cam (only for attending to important work notifications and needs). I only allow a little bit of my time to it, not like glued to it 24/7/365 for any app, even for work notifications.
I do play some simple, fun games and read my scriptures on it. My favorite medium of computing or browsing the internet is definitely the PC. Nothing beats it, at all!

Very cool. I had to have a smartphone for work, but wasn’t addicted to it. Quite the opposite. I’m semi-retired now and love the fact that I don’t have to monitor it. My sister and friends become very frustrated with me because I’ll wait hours to answer their texts. They know how I’ve always disliked texting, but they continue to text me. It seems they can’t or won’t wait for me to reply. If it was an emergency, just frighten call me. I still have a land line at home which I prefer. In my sixties and have been on the cutting edge of technology in the music business, but refused to be attached by the hip to a smartphone. Back in the eighties I had a pager, then I would call back on a dumb phone. I have been single for quite a while now. I’ve been on dates and they are always checking their phones. Total drag, but I realize how so many people are addicted to be “connected “ every minute. Sucks to be analog!

I also remember when fb first came out and i thought all these things (specificly with the security and stalking features) that you mention here. I saw it coming years ago and opted out of it.

From Denmark. My father's first cellphone was an Ericsson Hotline, using a 1G analogue network, NMT 900 (Nordic Mobile Telephone). No SMS, just talk. Coverage mainly in major towns and cities and alongside highways in Denmark. No calculator, no clock, no games. Just talk. Cost around 6000 USD around 1988-89 in Denmark. Imagine that! Even a dumbphone would be a dream back then.

Important emails or road directions aka gps :p Not trine tell u how to live you life I just think that may help you and some others watching this. its been my perfect match old dumb phones were just that now with the conductibility it makes it an actual practical option for 2021 now almost 2022

Since I manage several companies I totally share this feeling I use my smartphone to work but as soon as possible I drop it for my Nokia "Banana phone" with KaiOs on it and I feel better less oppressed, without all the useless notifications.
I can even use the Google assistant to write a message with my voice or request a call.
There are just a handful of "VIPs" who can call me and send me a message in case of emergency but that's all.

This is the biggest “tell” about how bad smart phones have screwed up our society...I eat lunch around other coworkers and there is little to no conversation! Then when break is over people (myself included) talk about what we should have at lunch time! Occasionally I forget my phone as I run out the door in the morning or just decide to leave it in my locker at lunch. Then I relax for a while or try to start conversations. So depressing! Only a few respond. Also, the oldest guy is the least responsive🙃
I have this phone arriving tomorrow. Ironic that it was purchased online on my iPhone. The plan is to revert most tech back to presmartphone days for a month. Detox as they say. If I find the pros out way the cons I will stick with it.
What I would like to see is a feature phone that is easy to text on, has a good camera that can also text the pics well. Basically texting close to a smart phone. Also wouldn’t mind gps, but not a big deal.
I suggest doing what I plan to do. Research good gps’s you mount in the car if it’s not built in. We used to do it before smart phones!
I think we just want to enjoy life for life again.

Same age as you and just bought this in the blue color off Amazon. I remember having an old Nokia 6555 and then a BlackJack 2 from AT&T back in my high school days during the Myspace craze and they did great! Then it was cheap android phones all the way up until a few years ago, switching to an iPhone SE 2020 model. I still have it, but the constant connectivity is both making me complacent and its such a bother. Sometimes tech can be a bad thing. Like how if you can't go out to town without looking at a phone constantly, you may have a small problem lol. Oh, and battery life. The phone is now on 76% health and it goes dead within maybe a few hours of use at best. Tsk tsk tsk.

Back in 2000 I was 39 yrs old when I got my first Nokia 5110 mobile phone complete with aerial. You look to young to have been a twinkle in your fathers eye 😜 back then. I eventually got a first generation iPhone when they first came out & was blown away by the touch screen etc. A few yrs later I got an iPhone 4 & that was my last iPhone. I’ve had a Motorola nexus smart phone ever since my last iPhone, which is about ready for the knackers yard (British saying). I won’t be getting another smart phone as it’s become the one tool for EVERYTHING & has become so intrusive in our lives. It monitors your every click just about, with apps that even know your heart rate & during co v î d apps even monitored you. It knows where you are & where you are going & turning the location off doesn’t stop phone companies knowing where you are. Google/UA-cam is the biggest company, even selling your data & tailoring your searches on what Google thinks, not you. Everything is just about digital nowadays & books will eventually be extinct, like the Dodo. If you remember the Jason Bourne movies he threw the burner phone away after he used it & for good reason. If you can find your iPhone with find my iPhone then so can anyone else.
