  • Robby brought over the old Model AA tow truck we are going to be building for him. While he was here we got a recovery call for a sxs at the escalator on Hells Revenge Trail. First we had to repair Trailmater from a broken airbag mount the night before. Thank you everyone for the support and watching.

    I suggest a 70s Ford straight 6 - borgwarner 4spd with an NP 205 and an Atlas splitter - old school style .. super easy to work on and just a work horse .. has the most torque and reliability of any ford made and it’d fit nice in that Ford engine compartment .. throw some 4.88s with air lockers set up on some 38s .. won’t be a speed Demon but it’ll get the job done.
    great video Rory .. keep them coming.

Nice recovery, I'm always hugely impressed with the Rory and trailmater combination - casually drives a tow-truck and trailer along the trails that break many others, recovers them and drives back out - the stuff legends are made of.

    Understand why there is strong opinions about Fords. Another opinion to add here; ran the 1972’ish 351 C.I.D. Cleveland engine for many years in a 1965 4X4 3/4 ton, ran in the sand fine on 34’s. It was durable and impressive for a dish-piston smog-era engine. (Not big on power; stock, but toss a higher CFM carb on-top a flowing intake manifold, livened it up noticeably. Unable to claim this type of impressiveness with a 1983 351 “M”., 4X4, but it survived some heavy throttle off road trailer-towing use. Had an ‘06 - 5.7-liter, 4X4, was poky, only 13 MPG, but no failures. Oil changes often, are essential for longer term durability. Just an opinion here, not recommending any brand, since brand differences are less today.

    My dad who passed 11 years ago would not be in UA-cam or watch UA-cam but if I showed him tater Fab rats and Matt's off-road he would be a subscriber he would be waiting every Sunday Tuesday Thursday to watch. You on the other hand definitely remind me the most of my dad my dad could build anything. Give him some scrap metal and a welder and ask him what to build and he will build it. He never paid professionals to do anything we always did everything electrical plumbing excavating framing painting whatever we did it all and now that's what I do for a living still not much of a welder but I can weld I grew up grinding my dad's welds LOL

    I had a 95 F150 with a basic 302.. 5 spd 4x4.. It was a monster once you put it in 4 wheel low. But it was pretty gutless on the highway when pulling a big tool trailer. But I did run it past 320k miles before it finally spun a bearing. So I wouldn't call it "un-reliable". That thing never stopped running

    • @tinsano6030
      @tinsano6030 2 роки тому

      @@ponypwr lmfao as a chevy guy I can tell you the only reason I run 94 & older chevy trucks is cause where I live in the rust belt you can buy 5 88-94 chevys for the price of one 96 & older ford pickup that needs 5 grand or more worth of work, & if you can find one that that the frame isnt swiss cheese. One of the trucks on the top of my list to own is a 96 or older ford truck with a 300 6 with a 5 speed 4x4. Too bad ford stopped building work trucks in 96 when they started stuffing the boat anchor that is the 5.4 Triton in everything

      @@KoltFin Yeah.. Chevy's are better for projects-- that's for sure. I've had good luck with Fords though. a 95 F150 5spd 4x4 that went to 320k miles.. and for the past 8 years, I've driven a stock 2002 F350 7.3L Diesel 6spd 4x4, which is already past 330k miles and still going very strong. I don't think this diesel will ever die. lol.. It can still pull an overloaded 5th wheel trailer up a mountain and not ever care that anything is back there.

    Huge fan of your show Rory. I was disappointed in your comment about Robby's AA definitely getting a different engine...not a Ford... in other words. You were saying a few shows back about the hate about Jeep is better than Toyo than Subaru than whatever and that it was stupid, then you go and say it.
    I'm 66 years old and have driven Ford's my entire driving life and have never been left on the side of the road by a Ford. That includes a few years of off-roading as well. I tow heavy with mine, go to town, you name it, that's how I've driven mine...not a mall traveler. Ford makes awesome engines as well. They all have junk engines too. Hopefully Robby does it justice and builds a Ford to put in it.

    I like your thoughts on redundancy, Rory. It's good for everything, but especially for a business like yours, where you're out in the middle of nowhere, frequently alone, and absolutely can't afford to not be able to get out. Good retrieval, and Roby's tow truck is going to prove interesting.

    I love this. Every time I watch it I notice something new. Robbie’s channel is awesome. I like seeing all of you guys working together, it’s like a party to me. All my favorites together in one video even though y’all are so many miles away from each other. God bless

    Another great video Rory and crew. Thanks for the explanation of your work. Always great to hear. You can see Robby watching and learning and I’m sure looking at the cool tools on Trail Mater. Practicality and common sense is what makes Rory successful at what he does. Always have a backup for the backup. Looking forward to Robbie’s build. Great camera work guys. Looking forward to the next video.

    I do appreciate you explaining how and why you do things and the reasons why the wrecker is set up the way it is. Lot to learn through your experiences. This was a great recovery to watch.
