- A first-of-its-kind law went into effect in Philadelphia this month, mandating that all businesses accept physical dollar bills or coins in exchange for goods and services. Overall, the percentage of cash payments in the U.S. has been dropping, from 33% to 26% in just the past four years. That's prompted some businesses to go entirely cashless. But not everyone is buying in. Brook Silva-Braga reports.

Agreed!!! Cashless everything is easily tracked. With cash, it is a difficult process: Someone would either have to root through my receipts in my garbage (assuming I got one, and threw it out at home) or track me some other way and then tap into the security camera's wireless or cloud storage (assuming it wasn't a direct recording or that they even have a security system) at the store I visit to see what I buy. And tracking is out anyway as I never got a smartphone lol so good luck even figuring out which store I went to. (I guess they could use traffic cameras / license plate readers, but half the time I am on my bicycle so... good luck with that)
BTW, it isn't that I am up to no good, or think anyone would have a reason to want to spy on me, it's that we all have "something to hide" - it is called our private lives and anyone who wants access to the daily minutia of it can go f*** themselves!

@Dross M You feel differently if you lived through the October blizzard of 2011. Some places had no power for over two weeks. Ever since then when a storm is brewing I dont get milk and bread and get some cash. It was an issue.

Heck where have you been our credit and debit cards have been chipped for the past couple years. People won't let them put a microchip under their skin so why not on all of their plastic they have no say there. Plus they know everyone lives on credit cards well most people at least it's easier.

If I’m a business owner there’s no way I’m turning down a customer who decides to pay with cash. No way I’m allowing that money to walk out of the door.
That's your choice. That is fine. Nobody nor any business is forcing you to go cashless.
The problem is stores like these have an "unlimited" amount of customers. It takes a lot longer to check someone out with cash than it does for them to just swipe it, which means they're actually losing money by taking cash since they can't take as many customers.

The Street Meat vendors, hotdog vendors, McD’s dollar menu, pizza, Chinese food, KFC, all cost less than some Salad joints and other healthy food joints. So I doubt they will pay that much for food.

Manufacturing spec is spot on, Material grade is horrible. I've bought two Bose mini bluetooth speakers from Amazon, both Chinese knockoffs. Layman wouldn't know the difference until internal components started going belly up. I did a sound test, audio quality is horrid. I bought about 4 or 5 different goods from Amazon over the course of the past 3 years in order to prove a point to my significant other (every time). I go so far as to vet the legitimacy of the seller.. You're always better off visiting a physical store.

Dhrumil Shah (Personal) most of my coworkers don’t have bank accounts and refuse to get them. we recently stopped giving paper paychecks and now have them loaded to reloadable debit cards.
LegoGuy87 you do know there are debit cards that have cash back and literally every debit card can have transactions disputed. I’ve noticed this belief that credit cards are far superior bc of the whole theft protection but I just think it’s better marketing from credit card companies bc there’s money to be made by offering credit cards. I mean even Apple has their own credit card now. The only thing a debit card can’t do versus a credit card is build credit, bc a credit is basically a report card on if you repay back debt.
LegoGuy87 I’m actually not against credit cards, I have a few myself. With that said, I use both an debit cards are not more difficult to dispute in my experience. You call the bank, or even in the app you can dispute the charge if you don’t want to call. Credit is good too bc that’s how I managed to get my business loan for my property I’m renting out, and finally the cashback is available for debit cards but you have to look for the right ones. Debit cards are just seen as inferior bc credit cards make way more money and market them way better than banks do for debit cards. If anything banks want you to get a credit card so that’s why I think there’s this false narrative that they are more reliable and safer to use than debit cards.

What gives you the right to tell a business what forms of payment to accept? Are you going to indemnify them every time they are robbed? Should businesses then be able to sue the local government and recoup their losses every time they are robbed? If you insist a business take cash then you should also insist that cities indemnify businesses for when they are robbed and their cash sales are stolen.

An eletronic confirmation of payment should take at most one business day when between different banks. The system is poorly run on purpose, so the financial institutions take people's money for a ride and earn interest/future market day trading gains with it.

India has made it a worse problem for most people in that they have removed large bills from the currency, forcing people to get with the program. It would be like reducing us to one or five dollar bills only. Or a $1 coin, and a $5 bill. Don't laugh. They will do it under the guise of curtailing illegal criminal transactions, like they do now with confiscation & reporting laws.
No, I have had many times that the stupid machine that was running my card messed up. Cash is faster.
Just yesterday, my girlfriends bank made an error and she couldn’t use her card. I had cash on me and was able to get us home and food. Everyone is talking about how all these other countries are able to do it, but they don’t show the dark sides of it that put people in worse situation financially and situationally. There is always an upside and a downside to a lot of things and we need to stop trying to avoid creating happy mediums.

I never understood why people would spend more when they use cash. Using credit cards allows you to easily track what you do with your money and plan your budget. When you spend cash, at the end of the month you won't remember what you used it for
@@limiv5272 Agreed, I certainly like this, though I do wish there was a sorter bot that could sort each card's transactions into one big spreadsheet. Though, there are still plenty of apps that at least gather them all into one place.
@@ChefBuckeye I only have one card so I don't know if it would work with multiple cards, but my bank's website has a function that sorts your spending into categories and makes pie charts. I don't use it, but it's nice it exists. There must be some app out there that can help those whose bank doesn't offer such a service

@@frankmagana1408 Ok, lets go through some of the things that you're losing by going cashless.
1) You lose the ability to spend your money without electricity or Internet service.
2) You risk being the victim of fraud every time you sell something person to person. Think FB marketplace or Craigslist or Farmers markets etc.
3) You lose privacy. The government and big corporations know everything you spend your money on and corporations will sell this data to the highest bidder.
4) You give big corporations control over who you can and cannot do business with. If they don't want you sending money to a particular person, cause, or entity, they have the arbitrary power to decline the transaction and there's nothing you can do about it.
5) The government can find out what political causes you are supporting and censure you for it if they don't like them.
"Technology" is not a reason to not use cash. Japan is highly advanced yet even in the urban cities, cash is king and no one takes debit cards. So...theres a different motivation for this...especially after reading the comments.
Japan is not "highly advanced". That's a stereotype that needs to die honestly. Japan is backward technologically in many ways (still mostly cash based, still uses fax machines prevalently, ATMs aren't 24 hour access, horrible internet integration for government services online, many applications based in paper and making manual copies in paper leading to long bureaucratic nightmares)
StarlingofAzerath Japan does have a super low crime rate though. But, to support your argument, in Japan, their currency is based on using a lot of coins, unlike our paper dollars which are easier to carry around. I can only remember getting paper currency when I requested large bills at the ATM. Everything else was coin-based. I had to purchase a small little pouch/purse to carry all the coins I accumulated.
They take credit and debit cards in Japan. Perhaps not the small mom and pop shops. You can pay for a vending machine item or your train fare with an IC card. Now back to the video at hand, it was dumb for a business not to accept cash.

It's actually surprisingly hard to open a bank account if you have even one factor off (no passport or state ID or driver's license, proof of address, etc). I almost couldn't open a bank account because I don't have bills (live with parents) to prove my residency and statements from another bank wouldn't be accepted. After a lot of back and forth, they took my state ID as proof of residency =_=

Leaves store prone to theft? Ever heard of hacking? They will have access to way more card info, cashless is not a good idea.
It's mostly a lose situation for banks rather than card users. If a hacker manage to get your credit card info and makes purchases, card holders will notify the bank and tell them that they did not made any transactions so banks have no choice but to give them the amount that hacker withdrawn.
But with cash is another story because banks and the government do not know how much money you had on your safe or register so they cannot make a full case or give you your money back.
You are not responsible for the loss of bank or credit card funds, ever. It's the Law. You are responsible for the loss of your cash.

In Sweden there are yard sales that don't accept cash, teens get there allowance on a bank account and have debit cards. There are apps where you can transfer money to eachother without having to pay fees and apps makes it posible to make payments without having to disclouse your information.

The problem with going cashless especially in the United States is that the transaction fees get passed onto the consumer since business will probably transfer their costs to the consumer. The reason againist large cash transactions is dubious at best since people or entities that have done something illegal tend to have an understanding with banks anyway
"Poor people" could also be high school and college students. I didn't get a credit card until I was 24, and one of my parents had to be a co-signer. When I was in high school and college, if I wanted to buy something, I paid in cash. I don't think it makes much business sense to turn away young customers with disposable income.

@dandanthetaximan Not every bank offers no fee prepaid credit cards. My bank (Fifth-third) doesn't, or at least didn't ten years ago when I graduated from college. I wanted a prepaid credit card so I could start building a credit history, but the fees were crazy. And at the time, they also charged a fee to use a debit card. So, the only way for me to not have to entirely rely on cash was for my mom to co-sign with me on a credit card.

I know plenty of restaurants that only accept cash period. It's just known, you come in with paper in hand or you don't eat.
If a 3% processing fee is killing you then I would wonder what else is wrong with your books since requiring cash only is a great way to hide your sales and avoid taxes. Patrons using cards will have a higher spend compared to those using cash, but cards leave a paper trail that make tax avoidance harder assuming you are even paying any taxes properly.

@dandanthetaximan Not sure. I was in middle of downpour with thunder and lightening in central New Mexico, very small town. Walked in soaking wet (out of gas) and went to use credit card. Lights were out and they said that electric was down and they were only accepting cash. Maybe backup generators for the pumps? They had old school cash registers and gas pumps. Suspect this was a common occurrence.

China is not completely cashless. Many older folks still use cash, and all business are legally required to accept cash in China. However, their cashless system is way ahead of US. 0% transaction fee, encrypted QR code scanning and transfer (no card number to steal), ultra-fast 1-second transaction.

Yeah except if you are a business in Philadelphia where the crime rate is high and the chance of getting robbed is very real - businesses should hold the city liable for any losses if they are robbed after being forced to accept cash and require the city indemnify them for their loss. There are far more controls on a bank account or transaction where you use a credit card or Apple Pay then where cash is used where the business has an open liability of being robbed until that cash is moved to a bank and deposited. Every robbery of a store is based on the idea that the store has cash in hand and that cash can not be traced and there at far more robberies and aggravated robberies in the US then wire fraud crimes.

I spent all my cash allowance over the weekend and I have access to more on my debit card, but I try not use it. It works most of the time, unless I'm desperate. Keeping cash is a way to spend less. Cashless is evil and will give total control to the banks and the government.

Wow - talk about flipping the conversation. It wasn't so many years ago that merchants resented credit sales because it costs them a significant piece of their modest profit. I also live in a rural area in the USA. We are always encouraged to use cash at local businesses so they don't have to pay credit card companies. A few of my local businesses have let go of credit cards and are cash only. (Or local checks).
And as at least one other commentor has said, we have unreliable internet in some rural areas, making credit sales a potential pain in the snoot - not to mention impossible during prolonged power outages.
I'd use cash more often if people at the ATM didn't take 10-15 minutes.
I deposit just a little more than whatever auto deductions are coming out and take the rest in cash every paycheck. It's not anyone's business what I do with my hard earned money.

Alan Peters Okay, good. I'm not the only one that gets stuck behind people that use 3 different cards to pay for their 40 dollars worth of cheap plastic toys and Spaghetti-O's. I always pay cash and always get out of the store quicker than the person scanning their card repeatedly until the cashier just takes it and physically types the credit card number into the register.
That's not what cashless means. Cashless means no cash, checks, or credit cards. Everything is done directly via phone payments, linked directly to your bank account. Take the credit card companies completely out of the equation.

To recap -Cash: 1) Does not require agreeing to "terms and conditions" dozens of pages long-do you know what you agreed to when you signed up for Applepay? 2) Does not track your data to sell to others 3) Works when the power and internet are out/not available 4) can't be hacked by someone on the other side of the world 5) Keeps a good deal of control with the person who possesses the cash. 6) You see it going away so it may help you be more mindful of spending. As far as the argument about cash being used for crime, I notice the professor used examples almost everyone is against like human trafficking. He's acting like he isn't aware of the myriad of oppressive laws in our country's history, or at least speaks as if he assumes that they won't happen again. Imagine what our government could do with the complete control of a cashless system.

I'm in Queens NY and last year there was a group of people breaking into homes and taking people to the bank so they could withdraw cash after they got the cash they'd dump the person miles from their home in the street.
Did you know? If you are robbed your out of luck, 99% of the time you won't see that money ever again. But If someone steals money from a bank or uses your credit card you are NEVER responsible for that and you lose nothing, It's the law. That is why credit card and banks are always pushing you to be safe, they have to pay for it if there is fraud.

They may forgive the charge because it was fraudulent but if that person has your account number than they can continuously drain your account; Causing you to have to change your entire account.
