For those who think this bridge is scary: it’s just a causeway. There’s nothing frightening about it, except the five bucks it costs to go over it. They’ve added a few side lanes for emergency stops, and are currently talking about adding a third bridge. The southbound bridge is the old bridge. At one time, traffic was one lane north and south. That was scary. The only thing that might bother some is the wind on a stormy day tends to buffer your vehicle a bit. Some mornings, when the sky is blue, and the water is still, it’s absolutely beautiful.
It's looks like that bridge takes you straight in to the middle of nowhere out in the ocean when your just crossing a lake. It only looks that way because of the curvature of the Earth.
TY for sharing!!! I'm considering moving to Mandeville and was wondering if this bridge was really low....but it doesn't appear to be as scary as I thought. I read how some have gone over the bridge and lost their lives. Awesome Video!!!
That's true. The rails are original from the late 50s when there were no top heavy suv's or jacked up pickups. I think they are finally starting to address the low railings.
OMG! I remember going on this bridge to go to New Orleans. My cousin played against Oklahoma state and he is now in the NFL known as Trae Elston and graduated from Ole Miss University.
The lake is brackish to salty for the most part. Every now and then, there is a an HUGE influx of freshwater from the Mississippi when they open the gates of the Bonne Carre Spillway.
Loved it!! Will be making the trip soon. I just got back. Lake Pontchatrain was a breeze to cross. There was no place on either side to pay $3. What happened?
@@iamalemon1808 The Verrazzano, connecting it to Brooklyn. Not to mention the three bridges connecting it to NJ. Staten Island is 5 miles from Manhattan at the closest point, a bridge between them isn't feasible because it would restrict ship traffic too much, and a tunnel would be extremely expensive. There is a ferry.
A bridge this low isn't just a bridge, it's a barrier to ship traffic. If you wanted to build a bridge between Manhattan and Staten Island and have it not be a barrier to ships, you'd need to build a five-times-longer version of the Verrazzano. That's not gonna happen. A tunnel would be feasible, but way too expensive.
It’s pretty structural sound for a bridge built in 1956 the other span was built on the 60s it had very little damage during Katrina TS pretty well maintained
Twin Span which is the I-10 version of this bridge that’s east of New Orleans suffered major damage from Katrina so the Lake Pontachtrain causeway became the lifeline of New Orleans after Katrina

12:34 was my favorite part! Great video.
sarcasm right?
Come on! 10:48-10:52 is by far the best part. It's obvious to everyone except you.

It’s about 15ft above Lake Pontachtrain it does have a few points on the bridge that are raised to allow boats/ boating traffic to pass under
I like this bridge. Because it look like you can turn off on the other said of the bridge. I haven't seen one like this.

that bridge is long! I can't believe that they built it
How safe is it to drive on this bridge in a dense fog?
Does anyone know how the lake water tastes?
The lake is brackish to salty for the most part. Every now and then, there is a an HUGE influx of freshwater from the Mississippi when they open the gates of the Bonne Carre Spillway.
what are those little building on the side of the bridge used for
Those are crypts where they bury the people who die before they can get across.
Those houses are there to work the draw bridge
Mostly maintenance
Great vid! Cool!
What do you do if your car breaks down?
Walk or swim, your choice...
I don't know. What do you do?
Call a tow truck, hopefully
Right n is it phone service out dere?
@@SUGRLEZZ Yes, cell service is good. There are also call boxes all along the bridge.
The longest bridge in the world.
That's the longest drawbridge in the world!
This isn't a drawbridge...
7:22
That's 24 miles long.
I'm sorry but I personally would have to take my ticket because I would not be going only 65 over this bridge. 80 minimum.
Shakiera Robinson ok! I hate bridges but I’m getting anxiety looking at this that’s too long to be on a bridge with nothing but water around me
You are funny. 80 miles an hour is too fast. Let that wind come up and you will be like Dorothy in Kansas. IJS
Loved it!! Will be making the trip soon. I just got back. Lake Pontchatrain was a breeze to cross. There was no place on either side to pay $3. What happened?
The tolls are meant to pay for the maintenance of the bridges
do they have ezpass
EZ-Pass is not accepted in Louisiana - only a separate non-compatible toll tag specific to the Causeway is accepted here.
@@roadwaywizAwesome video! I'll be driving to New Orleans in July. Do they take cash at the Toll?
Yes cash is allowed to use the south span towards I-10 the North Span does not have a toll the last time I drove across this bridge was in 2017
Can you legally ride a bicycle across it?
Pa Florian no. Even if you could it’s 24 miles
Your feet will get tired.
ever heard of tour de france?
Is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia longer than this?
Kuhzen no the Chesapeake bay bridge is about 4.3 miles long; this bridge is 24 miles long.
Kuhzen I didn't realize I said "cheapstake"😂😂😂🤦♀️
No, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is 17.6 miles long.
Rico Santos Almost at 17-1/2 miles but this is 24 miles long
Tonisha Chadwick And the questioner had asked about the tunnel bridge system in Virginia
7:28 Drawbridge!
If they can make this thing 23 miles long, why can’t they make a causeway/bridge from Staten Island to Manhattan???? That’s so ridiculous.
Ryan McNally they don’t have one?? How do people leave Staten Island?

Dimple the Lake Pontachtrain causeway is 23.8 miles long
This is the worlds longest bridge
Did cross long time ago and don’t ever do again
Looks unsafe
