I always enjoy the chat. I did read that there will be an audiophile release of DSOTM for its 50th anniversary. I think it will most likely be a UHQR. 🤩 I agree that the MoFi Miles Davis releases are incredible. I can't wait for the Van Halen One Steps to drop. Thanks guys and have a wonderful weekend.
Has to be Tunnel of Love for me, takes me through so many memorable parts in life. It’s there for good times, tough times, and seems to be relevant. Perhaps one of the very few tracks that simultaneously brings a smile and a tear. Enjoyed the show, thanks.
Highway petrolman…smiles, tears, thoughts from nowhere ,love to be alive ,just to hear this song that leads me on the emotional border and smiling tears wet my feelings again …
Steve - it’s a 2 hour drive to Mazzy who can order them for you. When you get back to the border and they ask you “anything to declare -eh?” You just say no
My favorite Springsteen song is Lost in the Flood, with the line “Well, that blaze-and-noise boy He's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin' point” as the song really kicks in. There’s so much raw emotion in that song, and on the whole album, for that matter, that it makes me cry every time. By far my favorite Springsteen song and album, and the only one I listen to often. Happy New Year guys!
Nebraska’s one of the only Bruce records I’m missing from my collection! I’ve always loved Born To Run. I’m a musician and I used to end my sets with a big show-offy acoustic arrangement of it. Well, years after I retired it from my setlist, my band was playing my cousin’s wedding and after we were done our set, another relative of mine approached me with the groom’s late father’s guitar (my uncle). He had passed away a decade earlier, and nobody had yet mentioned him at the wedding. I was told I should say something about my uncle and play a song on it. I was completely unprepared but I said something like “We all know Mike’s here with us tonight and so proud of you, I thought I’d play one last song with his guitar.” and went into Born To Run. It was the only song I could think of doing. It was a great emotional moment already but when I got to the last verse, “someday, girl I don’t know when…” I replaced it with “someday, Mike, I don’t know when, we’re gonna get to that place where we really wanna go and we’ll walk in the sun”. I didn’t even realize how powerful that would be until the words were coming out of my mouth. I’ve never had a lyric have such a profoundly and palpably shared spiritual feeling with a whole crowd of people and now I can’t hear that song without being brought right back to that moment.
I love New York Serenade because it completely absorbs me, because it gives me a big city feeling and freedom. This song has the feeling of sadness and joy, of depression and departure at the same time. You can really get lost in this song. Begins with the strings "dressing" you up, "clothing" you up, and then the piano takes over, taking you out on the street. The voice opens your eyes and shows the night, the bars, the woman, the car, the street canyons - it shows you life!!!!
Great video, Steve! Thanks for doing these. My favorite Bruce song is "The Promised Land." I saw him play it live at a show with R.E.M. and Bright Eyes. John Fogerty came out at the end of the show and they did "Fortunate Son." A truly sweet memory. Here's to a great 2023 to you and all the music and vinyl fans out there!
Favorite Springsteen song is a song that reached deep down into my soul in 1988 when my first marriage was falling apart. “Now you play the loving woman I'll play the faithful man But just don't look too close Into the palm of my hand We stood at the alter The gypsy swore our future was right But come the wee wee hours Well maybe baby the gypsy lied” From the album BRILLIANT DISGUISE
Thx Steve for - again - a great video. My fav Springsteen song is „Youngstown“. The Storytelling in this song is so real and understandable- and this is very important for non native English speakers. The meaning of this song is - maybe not only for European people with the fckg war around the corner - so important. And of course the guitar solo from Nils Lofgren blew me every time when I listen to this away. Peace from Germany
Great review guys on where the Audiophile albums have became post pandemic I totally agree people today are being more picky on what to grab I’m getting that way also. I have to say Vinyl me please has definitely stepped up their game all quality and prices are very reasonable oppose to Mofi and an AP . My favorite Bruce Springsteen song is Streets of Philadelphia it to me is his most personal lyrics what I like it fit the mood of the the movie Philadelphia which I saw when it was released I dig it because it’s so raw the music is so laid back his voice and lyrics so laid he changes his writing style it’s my personal favorite the video so cool he’s walking down the street and just blends in perfectly. Great episode guys .
great show as always Steve!! for me, Bruce's "Born To Run" is certainly my favorite, there's a youthful free-spirit yearning and excitement of heading out into the unknown world and experiencing everything life has to offer that is captured in that song that STILL gives me goosepumps when i hear it and it has that element of songwriting magic that made the song timeless and a classic then and still to this day.
Great videos as always guys! Favorite Springsteen song: Highway patrolman from Nebraska. Summarizes that lovable “black sheep” that every family has. Re: the plagent process, it makes no sense to me why it’s not used on everything that’s sourced digitally.
My favorite Bruce song is "Tougher than the rest", but not the album version, the video sound track version that was issued in the EP "Chimes of Freedom". To me, after watching for years the video version, the studio track sounds like a cheap "reading" of the song, like a cover version. And I like it for the power of the sound and for Patti's contribution, at the end she went slightly out of pitch, but that means life in music, specially in those days of cold perfection. The line "So if you're rough enough for love, honey I'm tougher than the rest" always put tears on my eyes, don´t ask me why.
Hard to pick just one, favourite Springsteen song but for now I’d say Nothing Man off of The Rising. The tone and significance of the 9/11 theme is powerful and heartfelt.
Montrealer here! I'm not the biggest Springsteen fan but I'm always up for spinning a classic that might get me more into an artist I've overlooked. My song pick is not the most original: I'm On Fire; picked because I played some fingerpicked acoustic guitar, am a baritone so I can pull off the vocal range and one of the few of my small repertoire where I can remember the lyrics without looking (important for those family reunions are night around the fire). I will say that The Ghost of Tom Joad album in the mid-90s got me back into The Boss and I have often heard it's style compared to Nebraska?... so would be curious to spin it. Lastly, it was nice to see Danny join "the usual suspects" with his spirit and energy; especially given that he was traveling. Great episode!
My favorite song by Bruce is Badlands because you got to live em every day ,Let the broken hearts stand is the price you gotta pay. Keep pushing till it's understood and the badlands start treating us good. "All of our lives in a nutshell "
Fave song would be Fire. Mainly because I am a fan of the Pointer Sisters & when I learnt it was a Bruce cover…it was responsible for getting me to explore his work…and therefore become a fan.
I think Springsteen spoke to the USA with The Rising and it was the most important record covering off a tragic period in USA recent history, 9/11. As for the song, Into The Fire is a haunting song and puts you right there, at the bottom of the stairs, and what Firemen go through each and every time. Very powerful.
Favorite Bruse Springsteen album / song of mine is all of them I don’t have to listen to So Tempt me and convince me The great thing about MoFi screwing the pooch is that fomo is gone, kaput, nadda and you can read the reviews on Steve Hoffman from people you trust before having to decide to purchase. Unfortunately because Eagles debut sounded so warm with the best vocal layering, dynamics and realism I signed up for One Of These Nights and CSN. Both are lacking air, are clinical and have the mofi audiophile overemphasized detail and sheen. I swear they goose these in the digital domain, not just a simple DSD mastering. Some say the DSD64 sound better than the DSD264 The Rhino Grundman CSN is very distorted in dynamic passages like Wooden Ships Mazzy - you and a few others recommended the MoFi Miles In A Silent Way - damn if that isn’t so much more engaging than the original 2 eye Columbia. American Beauty is analog and great. Evans One Step SATVV is analog doesn’t sound natural compared to the AP I have been on VMP since joining to get another copy of Fiona Idler’s Wheel - I have the original but I doubled up and got one for a friend (originals were going for $150). I'm going to say "The Wrestler" is Springsteen's greatest song. It's brilliant and simple with lyrics akin to a John Prine or Townes Van Zandt effort. The storytelling conveys a very humble perspective with its tale of the perennial loser who still has heart. It's a standalone song for a movie soundtrack that has a Steinbeck quality suitable for Nebraska or Tom Joad. I feel like I remember him performing it at the Academy Awards but the record is unclear. It did win the Golden Globe.
My fav Bruce song has to be murder incorporated because it’s a great story of a man who works in the criminal underground and appreciates if you live by the sword you die by the sword.Great video b
Tenth Avenue Freezeout is my #1 Springsteen record for the Motown guitar riff and all of the Big Man content (mentions and the sax riff.) Top notch stuff
Picked up The Healer. Great $30 pickup. Great discussion! Some notes on the 50th Anniversary Ziggy Stardust (which was half-speed mastered): I had owned two copies that had the same IGD issue on a few tracks and checking with others on Discogs, it seemed like it was a common problem for that pressing. Not sure if all copies had that issue but I would advise to proceed with caution.
I have CS & N 1970s repress which sounds incredible- I feel lucky this is the case. I do wonder how Helplessly Hoping would sound on the One Step. Fav Bruce song is The River - it was the first Bruce song I heard and it made me stop in my tracks and ask “who is this guy!”
I love The River - To the ears of a Brit who grew up in the North of England, I knew that there had to be places in the US that weren't the perfect, gleaming, populated by bleached white teethed, sun tanned perfect bodies that we were fed on TV. There had to be places like where I grew up, with people like I knew and I found those stories in the earlier Springsteen records that I borrowed from my local library as a teenager.
Oh, man. Can’t believe I’m gonna admit this, but my favorite Springsteen tune is his cover of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. That’s not the embarrassing part though, cuz I openly love that song. I apparently refused to take a bath as a kid unless my mom was cranking that tune. lol Don’t know the rationale behind that, but Bruce’s Christmas cover seemed to allow me to get cleaned up when I was a little kid. No joke….😂 Thanks, Steve. Always fun to listen to these chats. Great cast too with Mazzy, Nathan, and Danny.
MOFI/MFSL is the king of variety. DSD is ok with me, as it's all about sound not source. Acoustic Sounds, Intervention, VMP etc etc. are all fantastic.
Mazzy I saw 75 Bruce Darkness tour I agree with you don’t have as many Beatles albums or versions as you! Love the dead next review Skull and Roses please check it out
And yeah, I believe the Bowie Ziggy from the box set is the 40th, I have that one... BTW, I'd love to check out that Johnny Lee Hooker but you just flashed it on the screen for a moment and I couldn't tell which album it was. You said Santana was on it, but I don't think you mentioned the album title. I went back over it, was it 'The Healer' 'The Killer', I couldn't tell you said it so fast, sorry... ***EDIT Ah, got it, 'The Healer', thanks! 😊
I bought the Crosby, Stills & Nash when it was originally released and is a Monarch pressing. I also have the 2005 45 rpm 200g Classic Records version, remastered by Bernie Grundman. I have also heard a couple of the earlier Classic Records LP versions. Comparing all these versions, the original Monarch pressing is the hottest and the 45rpm Classic version is the closest to the original. The Classic 33 1/3 versions are a little muffled(also remastered by Bernie Grundman). Analogue Productions has all the Classic Records metal masters of this album and I am surprised that they haven't put this album out. The album was recorded engineered in Los Angeles by Wally Heider Recording Studios. I hadn't been interested before, but now I am curious to hear Mofi's take on the album.
Here in the UK the economy is in the toilet. Things are rough, cost of living big squeeze and gas, electricity prices are just crazy. Lots of strikes ongoing, the War in Ukraine and continuing fall out from BREXIT madness. All of the above plus extortionate import taxes will certainly take a toll on MoFi and Analogue releases in 2023. These are luxury products and are bound to take a massive hit.
The reason these records cost so much in Canada isn't just taxes, it is the inflated shipping and brokerage fees from UPS and FedEx. Tax will vary between 5% and 12% depending where you live in Canada. The $38 service fee UPS just charged me to collect that tax is the real rip-off.
One steps in Australia start at around $300. I also went to order Fiona Apple extraordinary Machine from VMP but shipped to Australia it was around $115 I had to pass at that price 😢
I thought that the Mofi David Crosby sounded good, but was a little too detailed at the high end. It jumped out at me on "Orleans", which sounds gorgeous, but when the acoustic guitar some in, it sounds like it's being played with a steel pick. Preferred the Classic 45. Anyway . . .
Fav Bruce song? It’s Hard to be a Saint in the City I used it for an original play in college and reminds me of Neal Cassady! Did I win? Thanks Steve Atlantic City and State Trooper awesome love the River too both album and song fav album wild innocent E street Sandy 4th of July fav song on that my wife’s name!
And re “buzz”, the Rastaman Vibration created a ton of buzz. They were going for $400+ resale. And the same will happen with the next one. This hyperbole is crazy.
I just dont get "audiophiles" complaints about the same titles over and over and quantities being so small. Then, these companies release unorthodox titles in very large quantities, and "audiophiles" complain about the selections and high quantities. I think it's great. These titles will be in print for years.
I highly doubt the VH One-Steps will be better than the OG's. They were done right the 1st time & All-Analog. The 1978 S/T promo EP is incredible along with Fair Warning promo & 1984 promo which both promos used the transparent virgin vinyl.
7$ for a dozen eggs ‘insanity’? Wait until climate change really hits, and food price isn’t the issue anymore, finding food is. Enjoy music on plastic while you can, and be thankful for what you’ve got.
I cringed when you thanked “Backstreet Records” for allowing you to film in their shop. I stand to be corrected but this seems indicative of someone who buys the records online vs supporting local shops like “BEATSTREET RECORDS”.
I thought my CSN one step was terrible. Agree side 1 and 3 were worse and it did have a few great song like lady of the island. I thought that some songs were just too bright and harsh. The vocals just seemed off on some songs. I did a shootout with my other version for suite Judy blue eyes with my fiancée and she told me that she never wanted me to hear the Mofi again. My other version just sounded much more relaxed. Anyone else getting this, or am I just taking crazy pills?
I don’t think you are. I’m also sure you can find an amazing sounding original or early repress which would of course be all analog and under $20. I don’t understand the hype of paying big bucks for reissues of records that are so readily available still. I kind of understand paying for Bill Evans, Miles etc. because those are expensive but who the hell is dumb enough to pay $125 for CSN or Van Halen records you can still find easily for $5.00 or less in used bargain bins?
@@bigsweetc6 yeah I have an older repress not in great condition I got from a goodwill that I like better than this. I also don’t mind that’s it digital, I think just the mastering decisions that Mofi make are questionable in my opinion. Some of my mofis like the mile Davis ones I have sound f$cking incredible and $40. I find myself disappointed with the sound of Mofi more often than others. I have never been disappointed with an AP release. I am done with one steps after this release
VMP has raised their pricepoint twice in the last year. I think their service is becoming too much work for them and they are trying to discourage their customers by pricing them out. End goals: press less, work less and make more (or at least the same) profit.
I hope those silly"audiophile" reissues are going away. As long as I have to wait for over a year on a new issue of an interesting new artist (May 2021 Bandcamp order, delivered Dec. 2022), I don't want to see any more Dark Side of The Yawn repress. I tried a couple of 180g "audiophile" records (Cure "Faith"), can't hear a difference on a very nice rig. I have not bought a single MoFi etc. press as not a single title is of any interest to me (Darkwave, New Wave, Punk, synth pop, ...). Music first, the rest is distant thirds. Listen to more new music rather than spending buckets of cash on the same three records everybody else has as well. Buy direct from artists to support them.
“Mofi sucks!, they have an amazing product but they lied so I no longer like the product for a reason that I can’t hear.” Is this audiophile pride showing itself? “I couldn’t tell that it wasn’t pure analog so something that I believed I knew turns out to be false therefore I’m going to go on a campaign of complaining to hide the fact that my ears can’t tell the difference.” Mofi lied and they might pay the price for that in court and I would support that but I’m not going to stop buying One Steps and others because they are reliably great vinyl.
I bought Mofi’s pressing of Thriller, which is the first Mofi that I have ever bought. It’s a beautiful sounding record. I’ve always been into AAA when buying records where possible, but ultimately if it sounds great, it doesn’t matter. I agree with you that most couldn’t tell the difference and listened to all of those records for years that were DSD.
Well it was available for about two weeks as we recorded this video. They seem to be repressing every few months or yearly so I would click a pre order or call music direct if you want it.
It’s old news. I used to love these audiophile records back in the 90’s and 2000’s when there weren’t as many records being produced. Even if my absolute favorite album was released this way, I wouldn’t buy it. Total waste of money.
You can. I purchased the two that were missing from by Chris Bellman AAA cut collection, VH II and Diver Down. They had CB in the dead wax. They were part of the recent $15 Walmart sale.
Great discussion with four great audio guys. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

What a nice discussion I found here! 🤩 👏👍 Great chat!!
Nice to see Danny back in the mix. Keep it up you guys are giving us so good stuff.
I always enjoy the chat. I did read that there will be an audiophile release of DSOTM for its 50th anniversary. I think it will most likely be a UHQR. 🤩
I agree that the MoFi Miles Davis releases are incredible. I can't wait for the Van Halen One Steps to drop. Thanks guys and have a wonderful weekend.
Do you pay for the one steps or are they a free reviewers copy ?

A good and fair sitdown. As someone who still buys MoFi, I appreciated it.

Kevin Gray's new label Cohearent Records will certainly be one to look out for. Titles coming soon hopefully.
Joe Harley mentioned that the first release should be out in about two weeks.

Nebraska is my fav too. Favourite track is highway patrolman. Dark and sad as hell, but beautifully done.

Incident on 57th Street, captures the sound and imagery of a very specific time and place in both NYC and Springsteen’s career.

No joke….😂
Thanks, Steve. Always fun to listen to these chats. Great cast too with Mazzy, Nathan, and Danny.
I like your skull n roses LP Steve going to review that one next
MOFI/MFSL is the king of variety. DSD is ok with me, as it's all about sound not source. Acoustic Sounds, Intervention, VMP etc etc. are all fantastic.
Mazzy I saw 75 Bruce Darkness tour I agree with you don’t have as many Beatles albums or versions as you! Love the dead next review Skull and Roses please check it out
Stephen Barncard is the difference between the first CSN lp and David Crosby’s first lp. He is a phenomenal engineer.
My fav on Nebraska is the Suicide cover, or wait, is that on Nebraska?
I have cut my purchases back, especially the audiophile albums mostly due to poor QC ... AP included... tired of getting noisy vinyl and non-fill.
Born To Run The River, Nebraska. I'm done at that point though I do have a great copy of BITUSA.
Good ro see Danny
Great video man
The reason these records cost so much in Canada isn't just taxes, it is the inflated shipping and brokerage fees from UPS and FedEx.
I have an OG CSN and happy with it
Yep, nope passed on a UHQR and bought 4 Craft recordings and the last 2 Chesky records that were released today
Mazzy I know u have CSN OG- nice reference suite comment!
Very true. 👍
The first UK plum label CSN album sounds way better than the Classic Records and every other pressing I've heard by far.
If you people got copies of any record and you enjoy it, that's all you need. Screw these prices. I don't need to hear the fly buzzing in the studio..
@@thetrentmeister Thriller is my only one step. It’s excellent! I try to focus on quality over quantity as well.
Thunderoad
Really unclear why the group says Mofi in a silent way is in print. Checked music direct, mofi, and 2 brick and mortar stores. nada. What a tease!
I love Croz but CSN isabetter album playing singers writing
Another AudioPhils only like mind numbing muzak shows. Spot the Grateful Dead LP!!
You can’t get an AAA VH for $15 at Walmart 😂. Stop the hyperbole.
Oh yes you can.
You can. I purchased the two that were missing from by Chris Bellman AAA cut collection, VH II and Diver Down. They had CB in the dead wax. They were part of the recent $15 Walmart sale.
