It's funny you mention nostalgia, because I honestly played HL2 for the first time two years ago as an escapist thing to get away from my college work. Now graduated, seeing this mod gives me a feeling that cannot be expressed in the human language - "You're there. Now what?"
The total genocide of humanity at the hands of the Combine is bad enough, but you being the only one who survived and who now has to live completely alone in a dead world is Lovecraftian levels of horror.
It feels so mysterious like what happened to everyone? The blood is still fresh, machines still active, nature hasn't taken over, and the citidal is still standing
@uncreative_avis Imagine this is Iron Lungs "Quiet Rapture" but only affected the living organisms XD, just leaving nothing, just like if you made a teddy bear without it's cotton stuffing, it's finished but not at the same time
I feel like crickets are making maps more alive. Because if it is night (or day) and you don't hear ANYTHING except you, there is something VERY wrong. And random howls and crickets make it look like only humans are absent
i love the ending, in a way. you can't continue into anticitizen one or whatever the next chapter is because the door that was closed off at the beginning for the sake of not skipping a huge part of the game is still closed, because nobody was there to open it.
This very much reminds me of the first Portal. The overwhelming feeling of loneliness, curiosity of what exactly happened, slowly losing hope. From Gordon's perspective it's even deeper, it's his fault. It's his fault everyone is dead. Maybe here he refuses to acknowledge it, that's why he still keep going. Hoping he'll find someone, anyone.
It's supposed to be creepy, but I actually find it very peaceful. Reminds me of the good old days when my friends and I would sometimes stay up all night, working on some class assignment or just goofing off, and then watch as the light of dawn slowly creeps upon the horizon and the city starts to awaken for a new day... so it feels nostalgic to me.
Wasn't this the supposed plot of Half-Life 3 from the letter of one of the devs? After taking Alyx, G-Man just leaves Gordon in Earth, with no clue what happened to humanity, the Vortigaunts or the Combine.
@@PitLord777 epistle 3 from Mark Laidlaw but I think it was more of Gordon found like all these alternate universes on the borealis and then he was left alone
the various changes to lighting, the day/night cycle shift, the extra little rooms you're allowed to check out this time, and even the removal of the hud make this just a little cooler than simply removing npcs and enemies. i like it a lot, for what it is. after playing these areas through hundreds of times, it's always cool to see them in a different way
This is literally a creepypasta bro "I was playing half life 2 until all of the sudden the npcs disappeared...the game then showed my full name and adress...thinking this was a glitch i kept playing"
Arriving later than Gman intended to City 17, Freeman missed everything, everyone he should have or could have met was long gone, with no Freeman to make the resistance truly unite and push the combine off world their rule continued, unimpeded. Time passed less and less humans walked the Earth. Slowly either turned into Soldiers or Stalkers for the combine empires ever expanding reach, Breen left long ago, ascending into an advisor. Earth now sits silent. City 17 merely an empty ruin left in the exact moment the combine left Earth. Any humans in the city where quickly rounded up for the combines purposes, what few may have remained far off from population centers long since died out, at a certain point there wasn't even enough food for the Xen creatures to survive. Had Gordon arrived earlier this may have all been avoided, but truly Freeman found himself the right man in the wrong place, and Gordon was alone.
Imagine if there was random events that would trigger specifically to mess with the player: Like for a brief moment, you suddenly hear an extra set of footsteps while you walk, the sound of doors you passed opening and closing by themself, your flashlight randomly turning off on it's own or you can hear props being moved for a brief period, almost like you disturbed 'something' and it knocked something over in a rush. And the probabilities are low enough to make you believe that it's just you being paranoid, maybe even have 'something' actually spawn as an event but give it an incredibly low percent chance of triggering , meaning barely any player will ever actually experience that event, but then they go online to further stir the pot about mod, and increase the anxiety in those discussing it and those actually playing it.
I'm an adherent of the belief that hell is very much so real and it exists through the desolate corners of empty and abandoned source maps. Anyways, amazing work, OP. Absolutely horrible in the best way possible.
You slowly wake up to the sound of Eli calling out your name “Gordan? Gordan! Wake up! We’re almost there.” Said Eli softly “Barney! How close are we?” “Roughly in about 5 minutes we’ll be there!” “Here Gordan, we’re getting to the borealis and getting Alyx back!” Eli hands you a crowbar, you grab hold of it with a firm grip and prepare for the battle that lies ahead, this battle will decide the outcome of this war. It ends today.
Within the dark you begin to awake from your stasis and then a familiar voice welcomes you. “It appears that you’ve awakened… My employers wish for you to… eliminate a former employee of mine, due to the efforts of… Mr. Walker… he has yet again diverted from an.. unfavourable.. outcome, but such has any interloper he has disappeared from my sight, this will be your second objective to.. well, you know what you have to do. Mr. Freeman has decided to go against mine and my employers will and has sided with….. the rebels. So rise and shine.. Mr. Shepherd, rise up… from the ashes.”
@@toyoprev I think it would be different. All the cities and man made infrastructure would be the same, but with the oceans fully drained, the climate would have been severly altered, rendering most life impossible, and so would make the game look a lot different; unless the combine had enough already once they killed everyone...
This has that same feeling of being completely alone in a place you're used to always seeing crowded and bustling with people. Like being in a mall after closing time, or being in school at night. Especially if you've already played through the original game several times
Everyone keeps saying this is what happened, if the Combine didn't fuck around, but I personally see more of one of the results of the Citadel's reactor blowing up. A version of City 17, pre uprising, stuck in a state in time, in some pocket dimension, with anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the initial blast dragged in. The town (or what's left of it) is still there, but any traces of people or combine still alive would have essentially vanished, possibly forever trapped in this quite corner of hell.
I agree with you, except the first sentence. The combine took a couple years to get rolling, but it is evident by the time Freeman arrives that they are not fucking around at all. In nearly every map Freeman goes through he can see the drastic effects that the Combine had on humans and on the planet. Five more years and there would be no more humans.
Have you ever truly been alone with your thoughts? Many people listen to podcasts, music, or just do something to keep their mind at bay… but what if you didn’t even have the game to distract you? There are no distractions, there are no jumpscares, and there are no monsters. You are alone, and yet you can’t shake the feeling you’re not.
Unsettling and disturbing my ass. 25 years ago i played in empty DM maps in games like half-life or quake cos I didn't had internet at home. I explored these maps, played with new weapons, had fun. Made up fight scenarios in my head shooting at thin air xD Sure bots are more fun than this but HL didn't had any. Unreal had bots and it was the first deathmatch game I played.
@@toyoprev Same here. Portal, for all the fun gameplay, always gave me extremely dreadful vibes. I can really *feel* that the incident happened just before we step into the chambers, and in the later parts of the game, this feeling grew even stronger. The entire game feels like I'm an intruder, like I was never supposed to be there, which is brilliant visual direction and level design. I love liminal environments like this so much
God the fact that there's no corpses left like usual really adds to how alone you actually are in this game, But there's also occasionally blood without even a single sign of where it came from.
The most terrifying part about the mod is that the combine are nowhere to be found. Keep in mind, the combine is the most powerful Galactic Empire. There is in the half-life universe, and they just up and left. Not even aliens from another world are to be found, which makes the overall lonely atmosphere all the more forboding.
Seeing your muscle memory from so many playthroughs of the original game is funny. Every point you reacted to something you expected is where I would have reacted too. Its just so... dark!
i wish the power was completely out except for the portable combine lights. either that or the lamps have been left on long enough that they've all burned out. incandescent lamps burn completely out after 5000 hours and the most resilient fluorescent lamps will be left glowing at the filaments or partially blackened from the ends inwards, if not completely dead. similarly, the mercury arc / metal halide / sodium vapor outdoor lighting will eventually have trouble maintaining their discharges and either strike repeatedly until their starters die or be left very dimly flickering their respective color (blue, white, and orange). some may also maintain a faint pinkish orange color from the penning starter mixture glowing well after the electrodes have sputtered onto the quartz, making them behave like an oversized neon indicator like in a powerstrip. eventually, assuming the grid is powered as an afterthought for decades, the last light sources will be indicator neons and LED's, assuming they were designed with a low operating current. ones that were designed to be bright will die around the same time as most fluorescent lamps. in case it was not obvious i am a nerd
I like to think that everyone only disappeared a couple hours ago, which would explain why there are no signs of decay and the electrical grid is still up
You know what would really make this mod stand out although would take a lot more work, is a working day/night cycle. Would help make the world feel a bit more alive and give you minorly different experiences throughout the lonely journey.
@@toyoprev I'm pretty sure Left 4 Dead has this feature in some maps as you progress. And it's possible in Garry's mod so I would assume it's also possible to mod into Half-life 2.
@hangry3102 you'd probably need to change the engine rendering function things so it probably wouldn't be possible. However I could dynamicly change the skyboxes to cycle through a day night cycle
Imagine if this was turned into a horror game where you’re technically alone, but there are…. Things… out of the corner of your eye, you see shadowy figures, just lurking there. Your weapons deal damage, but the problem? Once you’ve seen them, it’s already too late.
This idea is just genius. How removing the whole life from a universe can make it just terrifying. Can't wait to play once it's finished. I would even pay for it on Steam.
it would be so cool if they placed in subtle horror things like maybe catching a figure peek and dart down a corridor or have doors inexplicably close or open around you

I wonder how the elevator leading down to anticitizen one will work

This very much reminds me of the first Portal. The overwhelming feeling of loneliness, curiosity of what exactly happened, slowly losing hope. From Gordon's perspective it's even deeper, it's his fault. It's his fault everyone is dead. Maybe here he refuses to acknowledge it, that's why he still keep going. Hoping he'll find someone, anyone.

Wallace Breen:Welcome to Bulgaria,or what is left of it.
It's like combine already got what they wanted and left the earth behind.
👍 yep

“Gordan? Gordan! Wake up! We’re almost there.” Said Eli softly
“Barney! How close are we?”
“Roughly in about 5 minutes we’ll be there!”
“Here Gordan, we’re getting to the borealis and getting Alyx back!”
Eli hands you a crowbar, you grab hold of it with a firm grip and prepare for the battle that lies ahead, this battle will decide the outcome of this war.
@@toyoprev I think it would be different. All the cities and man made infrastructure would be the same, but with the oceans fully drained, the climate would have been severly altered, rendering most life impossible, and so would make the game look a lot different; unless the combine had enough already once they killed everyone...
The portal 1 music at the start really ties this all together.
This wouldn't be the same without it
This has that same feeling of being completely alone in a place you're used to always seeing crowded and bustling with people. Like being in a mall after closing time, or being in school at night. Especially if you've already played through the original game several times
This whole paragraph is the backbone of liminal space videos
04:35 THAT scared me
The only thing missing was a low quality photo of G-Man.
Is it missing?
"Wallace ? Its Eli on the phone, I have the BEST prank idea for Gordon"
When Gordon actually earned the suit
How it feels to come into school early and nobody is there yet

Kelly Bailey's "Self Esteem Fund" from the Portal soundtrack fits this mo(o)d perfectly.
@@realMrVent When I encountered that song while playing portal, it just conveyed a sense of absolute loneliness to me
@@toyoprev Same here.
That's even more creepy
The most terrifying part about the mod is that the combine are nowhere to be found. Keep in mind, the combine is the most powerful Galactic Empire. There is in the half-life universe, and they just up and left. Not even aliens from another world are to be found, which makes the overall lonely atmosphere all the more forboding.
Seeing your muscle memory from so many playthroughs of the original game is funny. Every point you reacted to something you expected is where I would have reacted too. Its just so... dark!
It really is interesting
i wish the power was completely out except for the portable combine lights.
either that or the lamps have been left on long enough that they've all burned out.
incandescent lamps burn completely out after 5000 hours and the most resilient fluorescent lamps will be left glowing at the filaments or partially blackened from the ends inwards, if not completely dead.
similarly, the mercury arc / metal halide / sodium vapor outdoor lighting will eventually have trouble maintaining their discharges and either strike repeatedly until their starters die or be left very dimly flickering their respective color (blue, white, and orange). some may also maintain a faint pinkish orange color from the penning starter mixture glowing well after the electrodes have sputtered onto the quartz, making them behave like an oversized neon indicator like in a powerstrip.
eventually, assuming the grid is powered as an afterthought for decades, the last light sources will be indicator neons and LED's, assuming they were designed with a low operating current. ones that were designed to be bright will die around the same time as most fluorescent lamps.
in case it was not obvious i am a nerd
I like to think that everyone only disappeared a couple hours ago, which would explain why there are no signs of decay and the electrical grid is still up
the source engine does NOT like the darkness at all. so if i removed them it would look horrible
So basically it's "Garry's Mod but you have no friends: 2"
Yeah basically
Imagine if this is what Shepherd sees in stasis just the world changing but no people
Idk if that's worse or better
It's been 36 seconds, I'm in love and dread at the same time
Same it's that perfect combination
Imagine at the end of this all of the characters say happy birthday to gordon
"Gordon? How did you forget it was your own birthday?"
Its kinda like Langoliers. You've been left behind in time. I keep expecting you to turn around and see the monsters consuming the past.
