When Classic came out I did feel I was reliving those times. Sure the world wasn't completely new, but I had forgotten so much about it. The people I met, the places we went to, things I taught them and they taught me, quests we did, dungeons we did, the things we talked about... and even how it ended. It reminded me of everything I experienced back then. It wasn't the exact same, but it was damn near 80% there. Many of the people I met were newbies. You really can re-experience things for the first time through someone else.

@@chemicalbeef3128 Same. The nerds in a basement game design was just something special. The world of the game now is tailored to every inch to instantly explain to me what and where I need to go. There's no risk out in the world. There's no risk using abilities. If they throw a hard enemy at me, I get npcs that heal me or a crazy buff. The most complicated thing I might have to do is kick. Nothing requires a real group anymore unless it's specifically labeled group content. In which case it's curated to hell to be specific to that. A ui element and icon shows me all I need to know and the only real discovery in current wow is based around addons calculating stuff or a guide.

Basically yeah. 20 years ago when WoW first came out, content farms basically didn't exist. UA-cam was still brand new and people just made amateur content, heck most people didn't even have a powerful enough computer that could run WoW AND a screen recording software at the same time, so everyone just played the game and VERY slowly figured things out. Nowadays when a game releases, thousands upon thousands of these content farm youtube channels, websites, blogs or whatever will grind the game out 12 hours a day and posting optimal things immediately. No-one figures things out now because they're already figured out in the first week.

Btw, people do NOT know everything about the Classic meta. There was a good 10-15 years of certain "truths" (from a spreadsheet in 2006 when we were clueless) being cemented, to the point where the community is gatekeeping against anyone daring to oppose it. I've seen people making guides about Classic even though they actually never played Vanilla. Let that sink in. So wehn they say "so basically, druids can only play healer", that is not based on any experience, but the silly lies being spread on forums for a decade. I actually raided as hybrid dps WTF.
2019: In my first L/UBRS run I got flamed for playing SV hunter, by another MM hunter. He was in MC gear and I was in green/blues. When I outperformed him on the dmg meter he attacked me even more. When I did BRD with friends we had a pug warrior tank, he wanted us to do a shortcut by jumping out a window and we were like "nah bro, it's 2 packs, no need". He then did it anyway, made us wipe, then called us noobs and left. I don't even understand why the soulsucking minmaxers even play the game. Are they enjoying it?!
The Classic community is overall a pretty terrible community. They've sucked the soul and fun out of a great game, and act aggressive when people try to get some sense & wonder back.
    Sad.

After 15 years away from WoW I started playing again about a year ago. It has been intermittent with more stretches of time not playing. So much has changed, so much has not. As an old time player I can say that I still am able to find the wonder & magic in the game; not with the same intensity as I once did but it’s there. I love exploring all the nooks & crannies in every area - land, sea, mountain, or sky. I wish the new cities had more of that - more empty halls, corridors, & rooms to explore! You did a great video, thank you.

It's the speed runners that really kill it for me. In any mmorpg game: Destiny 2, WoW, Warframe, etc. They learn the content then just skip past everything and dart to the end without consent from the group. It forces teleportation in some games to the next area, missing all the loot, or specific "kill 'x' number of enemies in a certain way" challenges, making it difficult or impossible for other players to finish the quests especially if the content can't be done solo. People won't explore long enough for others to actually experience the game, they just find the fastest route to skip past the most content to the end loot.

Once you have seen and know everything you get bored, depressive, unable to enjoy because you have experienced it all. This is what i think why many young people are depressive because if they are very curious and they get a PC or a phone they see and hear on internet literaly everything they ever wanted in a short amount of time that took maybe a whole lifetime for their grandparents and they get lost in life because they know it all so to say..

Vanilla still has that NEW feel for me. But it's still not the same really, since chatting in an online world was amazing at the time, and a pretty new concept when i entered the genre. So that's kind of played out, and i've played hundreds of MMO's.
Being able to recapture the original first time MMORPG experience again would be great lol. VR can likely do that oddly enough. I've played a lot of VR games that took after games like House of the Dead for example, and Space Invaders, and gave a new perspective and mechanics with VR. That's our best hope for recapturing the magic in MMO's. But nobody has made a MMORPG with WoW style quality in VR... yet.

The part about enjoying each moment because it is unique and only comes once is true, but I feel like that is discounting nostalgia completely. Because going back there have been moments such as certain TV shows, video games, or places that I didn’t really even like that much the first time around, but upon going back that feeling of nostalgia gives that place a whole new vibe. the problem with nostalgia is that it’s like going on vacation. To a favorite place. It’s great to visit but you can’t live there or else. It’s no longer nostalgia.

Part of the magic was everyone newly experiencing it at nearly the same time. It took a substantial amount of time just to level up. Months for most people. People complain now about how long it takes but it made the game better. This made the game "bigger" and more immersive. Your actions had more purpose.
Can it be recaptured? Sure, but it would take another Cataclysm and slowing down the game a little. Making the leveling dungeons bigger, repeatable, and more consequential. Adding significance to more than just the "end game"

I made a human priest named cosmicstar on Lightning’s blade a month or so after BC launched but I didn’t get the expansion until weeks later. Even northshire abbey seemed big back then and I would get lost so often because I didn’t know about the map and I didn’t know what was around any corner. Later on I’d literally get so lost I’d have to hearth back just to gather my bearings. Running around getting grapes for milly osworth, fighting the defias brotherhood.

Never passed level 26 but DAYUUUUUM the adrenaline when ia green dropped or not knowing that can kill you or not. Dont remember the name of the rare Zebra in the durotar i think it was lvl 19 and i was lvl 23 and got killed and i got so angry i said, NO MORE RARES! and went again. Also when looking at TBC while it was a decent comp one of my favorite things to do was play double rogue with a guildy it wasn’t serious but we got to 2000 and had an absolute blast.

I'm essentially brand new to WOW. I played for 1 month when I was a teenager and now that I'm 31 years old I just randomly decided to start playing 1 week ago. Everything feels new and exciting to me as I have yet to play WOW for even 2 months overall yet. The fact that a new expansion is coming out in a month and I get some time to learn more about how the game works before a whole bunch of OG players come back for at least a month is really cool to me. I will be able to experience new content with a bunch of OG players and get a shared new experience without feeling like I'm so behind.

this is what its like with dark souls games for me. its almost sad going through the worlds now, because i want it to be so exciting and new, but its just not. going through the worlds, knowing exactly where every item is, where the enemies are, how to kill them, the game now feels exactly like what it is. just a set of tight instructions with no life to it. where as your first run through, everything is a mystery, everything is alive. who knows what is around the corner. who knows what you will find. its definitely a rough feeling.

Everything looked so amazing and i had absolutely no idea what i was doing. Compared to most other starting zones with bright colors and a lot of sun the undead zone was just so spooky with all the undead, zombies, left behind barns and houses and the overall lack of sun. I was way too into exploring and going on an adventure to realize how to play the game. Amazing time.

See, my problem with playing classic is that people are not okay with you figuring things out for the first time. First time tank? Don't worry, the hunter will pull everything and run ahead of you the entirety of the dungeon so that you don't have to figure things out, and more importantly, they don't have to wait for you to learn how to play the game properly. No one has time for somebody that is going into the game blind. And to me, that's when I begin to think the new-player experience is dead.
