It’s the closest to an traditional Fantasy storyline and nails all the necessary tropes.

My favorite over the years has become The Half Blood Prince. I love how much Dumbledore we get in this book, and all of the Tom Riddle backstory is what really makes this my favorite book in the series!

Man, just seeing these book covers is such a nostalgia trip. I was in junior high-high school when the series was still coming out. I remember just waiting for the next book to come out, and how much hype everyone had waiting. And then the next book would finally release, then staying up all night when I should be sleeping for school to read lol. It really felt magical, I definitely miss those days.

    Personally, I'd say:
    #1 - Deathly Hollows
    #2 - Goblet of Fire
    #3 - Half Blood Prince
#4 - Order of the Phoenix
    #5 - Prisoner of Azkaban
    #6 - Chamber of Secrets
    #7 - Sorcerer's Stone
Honestly, I think it's a credit to the series that there are truly no outliers in terms of quality. In my reading experience, they somehow only got better with each entry. It's really only personal preference that distinguishes them. In all, a tremendous series of books that are worthy of every ounce of hype they get!

In 2001 I was 17 and my girlfriend at the time dragged me to watch the first film. She was a fan of whichever books were out by then and it came out near her birthday.
I went in so uninterested and so not into it.
I came out and almost immediately read all the books she had and years later after we had split up I kept up with the books and films and my wife is a massive HP fan so that worked out!
It has been a while since I read the books but I remember Deathly Hallows being my least favourite and Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince being my favourite

I was growing up when Harry Potter was popular but I never saw the films or read the books. My wife showed me the movies a couple years ago and I loved them, and I’ve listened to parts of the audiobooks with her. Hoping I can get my hands on the physical copies sometime and read them for myself

They’re worth it. The way that they encapsulate the love of reading it’s fantastic. Even if one doesn’t like them, they have such an incredible role in getting a generation of people to read, that I really respect them. But I also just love the books so there is that.

Heyo :) Great video, I'm excited to check out your other stuff! Especially your Star Wars Legends and HP content. Here's something I thought you might find interesting. Anyway, keep up your great work and have a wonderful day :)
Last year I asked my friends and family (plus some people on the internet) to rank the HP books from best to worst. Thanks to everyone who sent me their list! I assigned 7 points to the best spot all the way down to 1 point for the worst placed book.
My personal ranking from best to worst:
    4 - 3 - 7 - 5 - 6 - 1 - 2
Here are the results after compiling 84 sets of data which led to the following distribution of points:
    PS: 321
    CoS: 238
    PoA: 368
    GoF: 390
    OotP: 324
    HBP: 362
    DH: 366
Which makes the ultimate ranking from best to worst as follows:
    4 - 3 - 7 - 6 - 5 - 1 - 2
Here are both the number of times the individual books were placed best and worst:
PS: 8x first place - 6x last place
CoS: 5x first place - 30x last place
PoA: 14x first place - 10x last place
GoF: 17x first place - 5x last place
OotP: 10x first place - 14x last place
HBP: 13x first place - 12x last place
DH: 16x first place - 6x last place
GoF is the clear winner here, having been placed first the most and last the least.
There was a close battle for second place between PoA, HBP and DH.
CoS is BY FAR the least favorite novel with a staggering 30x times at last place.
Thanks for coming to my completely pointless, quarantine-induced TED talk.

I started reading them between Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire, picked up the Goblet of Fire the day it came out, and the same for the rest from there. I liked Goblet of Fire more then you did. I also found Prisoner to rate higher than 6th, in large part because it introduced the darker nature of the Wizarding World and introduced a wonderful character in Lupin. Chamber of Secrets was lower on my list (especially the movie), it was good, but just didn't grab me the same as some of the others, although I appreciate your commentary on it. I do agree that Order of the Pheonix and Deathly Hallows were the top of the series. The setup movie (1st half of Deathly Hallows) was a little slow out in the wilderness, but the finale was Amazing.

Just finished this series as well. I also only started at 17. My top picks are also those ones. My ranking on a first read is this:
    1. Deathly hallows (7) - unlike anything I expected but everything I wanted. Incredible way to finish the series. The plot was amazing; no slog. It always felt high stakes and it was. The lore kept growing and the meaning behind it and connection with all the other books before it is genius.
    2. Order of the Phoenix (5) - long but addictive and enthralling book. Feels sober and less whimsical and more political but in a good realistic high stakes kind of way. Amazing plot and information is released through pressure points and confrontation without info dumping to oblivion like book 4. It was the book that made me cry. Perhaps one of the best written books of the entire series.
    3. Goblet of Fire (4) - first 200 pages are massive slog and the tournament was not super interesting. There were pacing issues even though the first and last chapters were one of the best ones. I wish the world expansion with the school amounted to something more. However, Rita Skeeter though 👌🏻
    4. Prisoner of Azkaban (3) - whimsical vibe of book 1 and much stronger plot; not a lot of Voldemort in it though
    5. Chamber of secrets (2) - perfect introduction of the good and evil dichotomy with the extra info on Slytherin powers and Harry; great book for lore and awesome plot
    6. Philosopher’s stone (1) - magical first encounter but the plot line is lacking and there are plot holes. I wish this was mashed with book 2 in one book.
    7. Half blood prince (6) - overrated to oblivion; yes Dumbledore scenes are interesting but the plot is pointless and amounts to virtually nothing to know who the half blood Prince is and it’s unoriginal as it’s too similar to the Tom riddle plot idea of book 2 without nearly the same amount of suspense and good execution

I’ve never seen someone so wrong about hbp. How was this pointless???? It literally tells us Voldemorts only vulnerability in his horcruxes and is the reason why deathly hallows exists and the reason they defeat Voldemort. Chamber covered a very little and insignificant part of riddles backstory and half blood Prince does a much better job of fleshing him out as a character. The reveal of the half blood Prince is supposed to be a character moment for Snape and Harry. Harry saw the Prince as a friend and a teacher and the fact that Snape who just killed Harry’s only father figure was the prince who he considered to be a friend and mentor is crushing. You are wrong and dumb🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️

Speaking as a kid who read the first book in the late 90's a couples years before the first film, here's my list which I i guess is mildly controversial?
    1 - Goblet of Fire
    2 - Chamber of Secrets
    3 - The Deathly Hallows
    4 - Prisoner of Azkaban
    5 - Sorcerer's Stone
6 - Order of the Phoenix
    7 - Half Blood Prince

    1. Half Blood Prince

    3. Chamber of Secrets
    4. Deathly Hallows
    5. Prisoner of Azkaban
    6. Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone
    7. Order of the Phoenix
Order is one of my favorite movies, but angry Harry in the books just irks me

    7) Order of the Pheonix

    5) Prisoner of Azkaban
    4) Sorcerer's Stone
    3) Goblet of Fire
    2) Chamber of Secrets (Couldn't agree more, most underrated!)
    1) Half Blood Prince (The darkest book and the voldemort backstory is phenomenal)

Like each of these two lists. #2 and #6 carry all the weight in foreshadowing for the series and allow the others to have a meandering plots with abrupt finishes. In my opinion, deathly hallows deserves the comparison to Tom Bombadil. Chamber rules! 2,1,6,3,4,5,7

  • @Blastanker
    @Blastanker Рік тому +1

My ranking is probably gonna surprise you haha.
    1. Goblet of fire, idk why, I like the less serious nature of the book, just cool world building stuff for the universe.. the ending was good too, though I think I prefer the movies version of the veritaserum bit.
    2. half blood prince, the history of Tom riddle was really intriguing to me cause I seen the movies first and missed so much cool stuff like house of gaunt.
    3. Order Of The Phoenix, I really like how it’s more introspective and goes more into Harry’s emotional state and such....
after those 3 it gets hard for me to start numbering the rest lol. I suppose Deathly hallows would be 4

  • @davidvissersbooks
    @davidvissersbooks 2 роки тому +3

My top 3 favorites are Order of the Phoenix, Chamber of Secrets, and Goblet of Fire. However, last time I read the books was when Deathly Hallows was released so the order may change when I reread them. I also never finished Deathly Hallows because a class mate of mine spoiled the ending and I was too upset to read it then never got back to it haha
I really liked the events in Order of the Phoenix and the amount of content that was revealed of the Wizarding World in the process. Chamber of Secrets is my second favorite. I feel like it had the classic fantasy story including fighting the dragon (in this case Basilisk) and defeating the bad guy. As for Goblet of Fire, I really enjoyed the games. I didn't mind the side-quest feel since I was a kid reading the books as they released and just gobbled up the magical content. I would really have to reread the series to give a true order to how I like the books, but Id have to get another set as I gave my books to my little sister who zipped through all 7 books in a week!
On a side note, I am currently reading The Ickabog and am really enjoying reading her writing style all over again. Some people criticize it a lot but as another YA author, I don't mind.

    • @jonathankoan
      @jonathankoan  2 роки тому +1

I too really like the classic fantasy feel of Chamber of Secrets. Deathly Hallows is one of those books that doesn’t work as well on first read through, but grows a lot on reread. Definitely worth the time.
I haven’t read anything else by Rowling, but I’ll have to give the Ickabog a try.

great video!! my list best to worst:
    1. goblet of fire
    2. half blood prince
    3. order of the phoenix
    4. prisoner of azkaban
    5. deathly hallows
    6. sorcerers stone
    7. chamber of secrets
all great books!! goblet of fire is just so phenomenal to me tho. voldemort finally returns which is a turning point for the series and a student is murdered. we discover that mad eye moody is barty crouch jr in disguise and his mother switched roles with him in azkaban which was so shocking to me. we get the quidditch world cup which i love because it is so different and we get to meet students from different schools which was also very different but enjoyable. there are of course plots i didnt care for in this book but the having a tournament keeps the story at high stakes throughout the whole book. when i read some of the other harry potter books it feels super chill for hundreds of pages but with a tournament it’s like having multiple climaxes because big things keep happening. i also love all the cringe teenage romance where they r finally starting to have interest in romance and the yule ball is so fun. this book is just very different and it’s still fun because they are at the school taking classes. it’s a little of everything and i love it!

Chamber is a good "murder mystery" book, and it would be a lort highter on my list, if the victory wasn't served to Harry on a silver plate (or a pointy hat and a flaming bird). If Harry had earned the victory with a clever spell or something, the book would have been a lot better.

  • @TheWhovinerd-1963

I’m afraid I don’t particularly agree with all of your ranking but I respect your opinion . My personal ranking is
    1. Harry Potter and The deathly hallows, love how it doesn’t start at Hogwarts and we get to see the impact of the war on the golden trio amazing character development.
    2. Harry Potter and The Half blood Prince 👑, phenomenal book 📕, I absolutely love how it develops upon Voldemort’s character as we discover more about his past and I also love Snape in this book.
    3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire 🔥 phenomenal read it gives us a slightly different direction in the story as it starts to get darker, it’s the book I couldn’t put down because of how amazing it was, and Voldemort’s return is horrifying but so iconic and mad eye moody an amazing character.
    4. HP Prisoner of Azkaban- amazing book gives us a lot of mystery, the character relationships are on point and the reveal of pettigrew was amazing. I also love the father figure of Remus Lupin to Harry and The dementors are a cool concept.
    5. HP Philosophers stone a great introduction to a series giving us the characters and works within the story it remains an iconic classic as it started the franchise.
    6. HP the chamber of secrets- I don’t hate this book at all it is a very underrated book it’s fantastic and keeps the reader engaged with the horror aspects of it. The highlights of the book are Lockhart and The mystery of the chamber of secrets.
Now we come to my controversial pick
    7. HP Order of the Phoenix- now I still love this book 📖 it’s just my least favourite as there are many unnecessary parts to the story that sort of lose you in the story. I hate the attitude of Sirius in the book so I don’t feel as sad when he dies. However the highlights of this book for me are the introduction of Luna Lovegood and Professor McGonagall standing up to Umbridge. McGonagall remains my favourite badass teacher at Hogwarts.
This is my personal opinion you may disagree and that’s okay, to each their own xx

1 - Order of the Phoenix
    2 - Philosophers Stone
    3 - Chamber of Secrets
    4 - Deathly Hallows
    5 - Half Blood Prince
    6 - Prisoner of Azkaban
    7 - Goblet of Fire
I strongly agree with your reasonings for 6 and 7!! It's always so unpopular when I rank them so low lol. When I first read the books (as they came out) I would have raised them a lot higher. Now that I'm older they're good, but not my favorite. It's my least favorite of the HP series but...they're still wonderful books lol.
I put Philosophers' Stone higher for, me, because it just has so much feeling into it for me. Like I feel like as the books went on I lost some of the wonder that existed in this book. This makes sense as Harry gets used to the Magical World but I just love the way it makes me FEEL as if it is magic.
I completely agree with Chamber of Secrets though!! I loooove that book and it is so underappreciated lol.
Also your relation of the House Elves to Tom Bombadil made me laugh out loud! I never could put a good explanation to why that part of the book was so 'meh' to me but you compared it perfectly!

GOF, DH, OOTP, SS(PS)/COS/POA, HBP for me. Can't really decide on the order for Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Prisoner of Azkaban. I could rank Deathly Hallows first, because of it being the final book and the hype that brings (though do have a problem with the epilogue), but objectively, GOF is my favorite book. And yes, the whole plot is contrived, just give Harry a Portkey at any time, or how Moody wasn't uncovered until the end. Dumbledore didn't know his friend was not right? The last two tasks not really being watchable for the audience, But the way the Wizarding World was opened up, learning about Voldemort's first war, the return, Priori Incantatum (that whole chapter is my most favorite chapter in the series), etc.

Awesome universe but i wouldnt rank the books. I also love James Potter sequel series by G. Norman Lippert, great addition to a great universe, those books deserved to make some(more like a lot of) money, even if for charity or whatever, sadly it could have never happened. I remember I was greatly disappointed by the original Order of Phoenix, cuz i accidentally had read a fan fiction, thinking it was the real deal lol I just couldnt wait for the translation and found an english lang version. It was about a favor a real phoenix owed to Harrys ancestor and he could ordered a single person to be resurrected(phoenixes resurrection power) also some students(ofc HP included) became animagi. It was my 1st book ever to read in english iirc so i was never able to tell the difference ;p

It’s got some great positives, and I enjoy it a lot more than many books, but not a favorite of the series for me.

Your mom called, she said you're grounded for reading HP. Hehe.

Well, I don’t think that’s accurate considering I personally read her and Dad the Harry Potter books out loud and got them to watch the movies. 😂

    Alright this’ll be fun
    1. Goblet of Fire. Yes. Just yes. Besides the winky stuff and the friendship rift goes too far, perfection.
    2. Deathly Hallows. Amazing finish.
    3. Philosophers Stone. Amazing beginning and introduction, hard to put this lower.
    4. Prisoner of Azkaban. Not a lot to talk about, but I think Harry Potter still has the best interpretation of time travel.
    5. Chamber of Secrets. Love the young Tom Riddle stuff, lockhart is amazing, feels a bit too similar to book 1 though
    6. Order of the Phoenix. I still love this book, Umbridge is such a detestable villain, but it takes too long to go places often, like the start before hogwarts takes too long, Fudge is just an annoying character, but done far worse than Umbridge
    7. Half Blood Prince. Only managed to finish this book once, the only book i actually dislike. The ending is the only thing saving this book from being legitimately bad. Slughorn is boring, the teenage romance is horrific, voldemort backstory isn’t good enough/isn’t prominent enough in the story to bring it up, another slow start, just the worst one
