The IDL, established in 1884, is an imaginary line that roughly follows the 180° line of longitude and passes through the Pacific Ocean. However, this line is not straight and strays from the 180° meridian at certain points. In some places, it appears as zig-zag, deviating to the meridian's east or west.

Because it call international date line
A ship sailing from Vancouver to Tokyo crosses international date line on Wednesday 8th November.The next day will be 10 November.I dont get it how it can be. Won't it be 9th November? This is somwhere I read but I simply do not understand this.
It is simple......From Vancouver to Tokyo it takes generally 11-12 hrs by flight ( ship will take around a week).
Amd also according to IDL rule,Japan is 16Hrs ahead of Vancouver.....Total tine is 16+12=28Hrs,which means date will be 24+4hrs ahead in Japan....Thats why if u statrt your journey on 8th from Vancouver,you will reach Japan on 10th....I hope u understant it now.
