  • I finally got the cash to change my headlights. Yes, I have tried those headlight restoration kits and other methods to extend the life. But I figured I'd just change the darn things. I am not a professional automotive technician but I am a professional do it yourselfer.
If I can do it so can you.
    Performed on a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L.
Might not work on other models but you get the idea.

Thank you this helped me find the attach points to remove front grill, turn signals and trim to accomplish the task. A few corrections additions that might help you. (1998 Prerunner)
The front grill attach pins need to be squeezed from both sides not pushed in from just the side you can see. They pop out very easy this way. To make re-installation easy put grill in place making sure all lower points are lined up with their receptacles before snapping them back in. The top attach works better if you put the receptacle into the grill first (they do have to be properly oriented) Check one before removing or look a one that stayed with the truck side)
When aligned they just snap in no force required. The pin that he broke on the trim piece below lamp can be released with care and a 90 angle screwdriver. Look between bumper and underside of the trim piece. To reinstall put the pin into trim piece before snapping back into the new headlight bucket. Mahalo my friend, I'm replacing mine tomorrow & wanted to get an idea of what was involved. I have learned a trick for removing those pesky side markers... slip a large zip tie around & behind the light... and pull. It works like a charm!

Thank you! My '97 taco's lights were in bad shape; the bracket and reflector unit had disconnected; their friction posts worn out. That is, if you pushed on the headlights, they moved an inch or so, they wobbled. Finally one side went out, so I decided to get new units. They were cheap, about $60 for the pair, and they look fantastic. I tried to renew them before using a headlight restoration kit recommended by Project Farm. It worked OK but hardly look as good as the new ones. Rumor has it that this generation of taco will last forever. I keep repairing and maintaining it, so it just might. Now if it only got more than 19 mpg. 🙄

I used a small flat headed screwdriver to slightly pry the metal of the headlight filler piece releasing it from the plastic pin on that clip. Once the filler piece is released you can rotate the filler piece from the bottom outwards and it pops right off.

Usually people have a loud annoying 2 minute intro. Then they talk about their life for about 6 minutes. Next they talk about the job for a minute or so. During the actual work they do fast motion with no sound nor description. Finally, it’s customary to put another loud annoying conclusion with or without fake bloopers at the very end. Please try to get with the times!
