I love this technical talk. Like it's amazing what Colin can describe in regards to parameters for a snare drum. Something I could hear more and more of.
Interesting hearing these comments now about the Yamaha drums and the vents on the snare. Pearl has those and now Colin and Boston have moved back to Pearl.
Pearl has had such a better high tuned snare drum than say Yamaha or Premier! Dynasty drums just sound terrible from my point of view. Listen to older 2000 Cadets or 1991 Vanguard. I think they both used top Falam 2 Kevlar with a bottom Falam Kevlar with the guts taped in 3 to 4 different spots. Very high pitched snares!!!!
It would be cool to see a reaction to BD and SCV’s videos from this summer. They’re both pretty short and there’s only a little bit in the battery to react to but if you put them side by side there’d be enough to watch
Great insight from all! Another factor to consider with snare tuning is how hard the students hit (or stick choice). I have a group now that is in development and they just can’t hit hard enough to vibrate the snares if the bottom heads and snares are too tight. Consider the touch! (Also “Nitro” and “Vesuvius” was 2008, not 2007)

Wonderful
For the algorithm. ✊
Unrelated to this video but you guys should talk to Eric Carr (emcproductions) sometime. That would be a really fun podcast
