• Fall Project Part 1: W...
We just welcomed yet another John Deere 318 into the family! My uncle is looking to expand his nursery stock and has planted several more acres on of trees and shrubs, so he decided to buy another 318 to save him the trouble of switching between attachments...clearly, having two 318's was not enough! The '86 has been busy keeping the garden and nursery tilled up with the IH 48" tiller, and the '85 has been busy mowing and running the other 3-point attachments like the spreader, EZ-Vac unit, and various garden attachments. With both tractors working in the nursery, he was left without a tractor to mow with. I reached out to my friend Jimmy who had been working on a project 1989 318 in his spare time, and since I knew the history on the tractor and had seen it and driven it myself, I decided to set my uncle up with it.
This tractor was dealer-maintained most of its life and eventually ended up neglected in the NJ Pine Barrens. Jimmy picked the machine up accidentally during his hunt for a 50" mower deck for this 318 or 322, and brought it back to life after several years of sitting. The Onan P218G engine ran surprisingly well once he cleared the cobwebs out of it, and surprisingly had a lot of life left in it. It needed some TLC, though, including a steel flyball spacer upgrade, main seal, and a head gasket...plus a thorough tune-up which also included cleaning the gas tank and replacing the fuel pickups. The tractor itself had very bad green powdercoating on it, which required swapping/repainting several of the body panels to get it looking nice again. We snatched up a cheap 50" deck (per my uncle's request) and got it mounted under the tractor. I also replaced a few odds and ends such as the gas cap/gauge, RH taillight, seat, and replaced the front tires with the old 4-ply Carlisle's from the 210 since the turfs that came with the tractor were pretty bald. It quickly shaped up into a nice machine and is now ready to enter the fleet and mow. It will also be used to pull drawbar attachments like the sprayer, and will probably get a 3-point-hitch someday down the road.
A special thanks to Jimmy for all his time and effort rescuing and reviving this tractor! We are very happy with it and glad it was able to be saved from a slow death. Like he said in his own video, this tractor just wanted to run again, and needed a second chance.
Nice tractor! Here's an interesting story: after 3 years my 1970 Cub Cadet 107 might just run again soon. Finally got a new trans for it and it's almost ready to be put back together.
Nice! It will be great to have that tractor back together and running.
After 3 years of having the thing, yes it will be.
Nice video I’m getting a new 214 to finish my 212 restoration
Nice video and nice looking 318. I have a 89 as well, it sat outside for several years it has 400hrs on it.
Nice, there aren't too many out there with lower hours anymore.
It’s hard to have only one. I’d really like to pick up another, mainly to avoid switching back and forth with attachments. I’d like to have dedicated mowing tractor, and another for other attachments.
That was what my uncle was thinking by purchasing a third one. Now he can use one in the garden, one to mow with, and one to run the EZ-Vac unit.
I have a 92 318 with only 400 hours and stored inside for sale
Looks like a good working tractor! One of these days soon I need to bring the one home I made a deal on. I've just been so busy lately
I hear ya. You need another green one to take the place of that 332!
MichaelTJD60 I still have the 330 kicking around
@@71_sears97 Yeah but you still need another one lol
MichaelTJD60 haha I need to finish up more projects before I drag another home and dive in on it. I’ve already got 4 tractor projects going on in the garage
I've got a new 6 pack of Oregon 396-734 G6 Gator Blades coming from Amazon tomorrow ($98) for my new (to me) 1988 Deere 420.with a 60" deck...
Gator blades are a great choice. I had them on my last 318 and was very impressed with the cut quality (although they do make a mess with the clippings). They'll definitely make that Onan engine grunt a little bit more.
She’s a good machine! Makes me want a 318 now... lol. I’ll just refrain from doing that - my limit is three.
I'd have a hard time going to a 318 after owning a 420 lol
MichaelTJD60 Very true. My 316 and 212 seem like child’s play compared to being spoiled on that 420.
Looks Good.
Nice video man keep it up 👍
Thank ya!
I would like to get a 318 or even possibly a 420 someday. First I have to stop finding Cub Cadets.
Trade ya! lol. I can't find any 82 series here in South Jersey...both of mine came from out of state. Plenty of 316's and 318's around though.
good day Mike, i feel the viewers need to get an education about paint V powder coating...im from the era as a kid when these tractors were produced...im over 40 now. and i say paint wins...
As far as original tractors go, I prefer paint over powdercoat, but if the powdercoat is done correctly it will look amazing and last forever.
Good job on the video buddy 😎
Thanks!
You’re welcome buddy
Whats with the bounce house in the door way? You and your uncle havin a birthday party lol
Lol it's for my 2-year-old cousin
"it was my dream to get a 318" *gets 3 more* I love the 318's but really, really like the 430 garden tractor.
The other three aren't mine. I only own the '87...but I used to own the '85 and '89 before my uncle bought them.
@@MichaelTJD60 oh, my bad sorry dude.
@@thatolivertractorsguy2353 No worries. I wish I was in a position to own more than one 318. The '86 is supposed to be passed down to me someday.
Nice video. While I honestly have the strongest love/hate relationship, I wouldn't mind having a 3rd 318, or a late 316 Onan . Did the tractor have a dealer tag? If it's from Pikeville, ooooh.
No tag, but it came from Little's of Zieglerville.
@@MichaelTJD60 neat, still. I could drive a GT there, and it'd take an hour lol.
I have a 92 318 with 400 hours always stored inside for sale
Nice ride, will a 400 hood fit a 420. I have a Honda gx670
No it will not, they are similar but not exactly the same and the 400 uses different hinges.
Im trying to decide if i should take the belt covers of my deck it seems alot of decks dont have them , i dont know if thats because they were damaged or lost or simply dont have them , or if it is better for the deck to remove them . Any thoughts?
I usually take them off because they trap debris and moisture which causes them to rust out quicker. And they're not exactly easy to remove for cleaning when the deck is installed on the tractor.
I have a 92 318 with 400 hours stored inside for sale... located in DE if anyone is interested

Hey I can't complain about that. lol
What does that make for you now? 12? Lol
Sure feels like it.
