Just found you...I'm a beginner in mosaic. WONDERFUL tutorial. Clear - precise - makes the inspiration in me well up. I'm going to subscribe. Thank you.
What a beautiful birdbath you created! Absolutely love the colors! And all your tips for working with mosaic materials and tools are so helpful! I'd love to give this project a try.
What a lovely birdbath. I am a beginner in mosaic art and I would like to know what kind of grout you used. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. :)
Does the grout with polymer cause a problem if you throw the cleanup water in the non food garden? I’m trying to figure how to do this and be ecosavvy. I appreciate all the reuse of items that you do!
That is correct. Concrete loves water (why we use it to build bridges), my adhesive is concrete (thin-set), and the substrate is cast concrete form. But know I hardy ever use sealant, only utilitarian like a floor.
Thanks for a wonderful clear video. They are all great!!! Question: What type of thinset did you use in this project? I am trying to broaden my understanding of working with thinset and glass. I have heard elsewhere that you should either use a white silicone glue to enhance reflective light when working with glass, or specialized thin set. But I have been in classes where we used just polymer added thinset with good results. What are your thoughts? Thanks a bunch!
Hi JD, I used a standard polymer fortified thinset made for glass. FlexBond, Laticrete 254 and Mapei Keraflex are all good choices. No additives are necessary. If you are concerned about light reflectivity which maybe be the case if using translucent or semi translucent material use a white thinset. Most all of these brands offer both white and grey thinset.
Hi Carol, great question. I do not use epoxy grout. Standard polymer fortified grout works fine. It has an amount of plasticizers already in the mix and the birdbath itself is meant to hold water.
Kim and I rarely seal because grout is concrete, it likes water. We build bridges with concrete. We both feel we can get stains and such out of unsealed grout more easily if not sealed. If you experience freeze/thaw be sure to cover the mosaic or take in to shelter during those months. I use an upgraded grout (Laticrete Perma Color) because it has sealant and UV protectors in it, but I still bring in for the winter. If you do choose to seal be sure to get sealant off of all the tiles, it will dull them. Sealing is labor intensive and a personal choice. Good luck, great project. Willing to send me a photo?
Depends on many factors, how wide your grout lines are, humidity, brand of grout used. Typically somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes. Watch the grout demo in this video, Kim uses her fingernail to "test" ua-cam.com/video/IPRfPiXWvdc/v-deo.html
I do not seal. I find it more difficult to clean any stains out of projects that have been sealed and there are some concerns about the sealer affecting the wildlife. Also, there are polymers in the grout I use and some of the newer grouts don't require or recommend sealing. I always advise researching the product (grout) you use and then use your best judgment for your area and project.
The acrylic paint is very stable, will not wash off and as said in video will be fine if you later decide to mosaic over that area. Thanks for being a fan!!
Thanks for watching! I never keep official track I would say I have 4-6 hours in creating the mosaic and another 3 or 4 hours in the grouting, finishing, and prep work. Since there is very little cutting involved. It went quick!
Hi Deirdre, Grout is a cement based product and today's commercially available grouts almost all have polymers added. These polymers are the same base as waterproof glues. No waterproof additives are needed. Remember grout is used in showers, pools etc. Manufacturers have spent 10's of 1000's of dollars for formulate their products, and unless you are using a standard unmodifiedgrout nothing is needed. If you are using an older version that is unmodified you should refer to the manufactures instructions as to what additives maybe used. If you add something not recommended by the manufacture you risk unexpected results as other chemical reactions could occur.
@@kimwozniak5663 Oh wow thanks for your valuable info on this ! I just designed & finished a mosaic bird bath. Just need to grout over the top now. THANK YOU for your response ☺ I'd like to use a teal grout for my next bird bath project though. Could you recommend a top brand that you would use ? TY !
@@deirdrebaker8741 Finding teal will be the hard part Many manufacturers are only producing Nutrals these days. whites, gray, browns taups etc. There are often some slate type colors though. Home Depot carrys PolyBlaend. It is made by Custome Building products. Mapei is great and so is Laticrete. You will need to check what you can get in your area. Just make sure it is sanded and Polymer fortified.
@@deirdrebaker8741 You can do that, but it will compromise the integrity of the grout. You really need a colorant that is for cement based material or a pure pigment.
Thank you for this great vdo, loved the idea and the chosen colours
Thanks for watching, one of my favorite outdoor projects!
So glad to see this. Looks perfect for a hummingbird bath which is my goal...

The plants actually do not appear harmed in anyway, and better that waste water be absorbed in the ground vs your plumbing!
Beautiful. Question: No sealant despite the water in the bowl on a regular basis? Thank you

Stunning. M not sure if I missed it but where would you get a bird bath like yours to turn into this stunning bird bath?
Thank you for being a fan. We purchased at a local garden store, we discuss in part 1.
I went back and watched all of it, great informative video, and thanks for the heads up on where to purchase. It really is beautiful.

Can you please tell me. Where to buy yellow tool you are using to spread grout

Do you not need to seal the grout before filling it with water?

How long do you keep the grout on before you sponge it away ?

Did you color the grout or did it come in that color?
The color is "sable brown", from Home Depot. It is really a lovely color. Thanks fro being a fan!

How many total hours did you, a professional, devote to this? I'm guessing four days, 2 hours a day, at least.
