Thanks Brian. It has been a frustrating year because I have not been able to get to France, otherwise I would have done the Arcachon trip my Mirror, and the forthcoming Vela Raid on Avel Dro. But the combination of Covid and not being in the EU any longer has meant I have had to cancel both trips.
Brilliant video Mary, that's a wonderful setup you have, thank you so much for the detailed demonstration. Pleeeeeeeeease make more videos! God bless and fair winds, Chris 👍
Thanks Mary loved to see how your camping works would love to see you sail in your local area and how you set up for a journey, raid etc. Look forward to more content.✌️
Ingenious Mary Dooley - what a great idea! Excellent warning about the potential for entanglement in a capsize as seems an important safety issue for any sleep-on boat. Typically we would have some warning although a sudden capsize while sleeping would prove treacherous in a confused state. Maybe having the life vest inside the tent perhaps attached to the tent opening? Even sleeping GI Joe/Jane style with a suitable knife strapped to ones arm or leg could address a range similar scenarios? Have enjoyed your cameos on Roger's channel so excited to now discover you have your own!
Thanks for the video it was brilliant! You have an ability to communicate beautifully naturaly. i was watching loads of roger barnes videos and discovered a way to get into sailing i love his boat but yours seems more manageable for one person. i would love to see more videos about your boat and how you sail her. Brilliant idea with the tent😬
My Australian built Mirror only had the back Mast step! Might have to look at altering that! I was looking at a boom tent but this looks much easier to stow. Thanks for the video!
Excellent informative video Mary .... stepping out from RBs shadow!! ...... great practical advice for those who wondered whether a Mirror could be used for cruising..... of course it can! Any more in this series, much anticipated. 👍👨🏻☘️
Thanks I am glad you enjoyed it. I tend to sail on my own but coincidentally have just come back from sailing in the Venetian lagoon in roger’s boat. So I suspect he will be doing a video.
This is amazing. I'm looking into getting a dinghy I can camp in, and this is a great setup! Good thinking about having the inner door left open. I never thought about what would happen if the boat capsized while you were asleep. It's a scary thought. I'd probably do something like bring a rope from outside so I could follow it through the openings.
Rocking the mighty Mirror! Go Mary! I'm 18 stone 5'11'' I managed my first kip afloat on my Mirror recently.Once I was in my bag I was comfy, but getting there was " doable" I expect beaching is a better option for the likes of me. Still a lot of fun! Looking forward to more Mirror clips 👍
Chichester harbour is my stomping ground, I plan on getting a tow bar and go further afield one day. I'm only doing little voyages for now as I'm quite new to cruising. My heart is set on bigger adventures one day.
Such a very nice set up. Love ❤️ it. Very well done girl. Thanks for sharing 👍. I have still not found a decant way to get a tent installed on my Hobbie Tandem Island. Even so with my outriggers, nothing really worked right. Your wood "floor" idea is pretty sweet. I will try to do "kinda" the same concept. Seems very promising (even so, my boat is just a piece of floating plastic"). I am not worried about capsizing due the "wing span". Just struggling with "keeping it simple" but also very effective. Happy to see you someday around. Always fair winds and safe travels. Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
Hello Mary. This is a nice surprise. Subbed you and look forward to the next vid. A friend of mine has a Mirror and I told him about your tent as it was seen in one of Rogers' vids some time ago. Keep well and keep on keeping on.
Great video thanks. Can see some lovely trips with my children utilising this. Would be great to have a video on solo self launch and land in a mirror as new to this boat. Also UA-cam lacks a good video on rigging a mirror for the newbie. Looking forward to more great videos thanks for sharing your knowledge :)
Nice set-up and lovely boat, I love the idea of sailing and staying overnight on board, something I'd love to get into but haven't even got the foggiest how to sail yet..never even been on a sail boat but one day .
I'm an absolute beginner, husband has bought a mirror and I am looking forward to being able to take it out alone as I will learn best alone - brilliant to see someone doing it lots - similar age to me - mucho learning to happen yet though !
Thanks sue. Yes I have been lucky enough to have met some really inspired female sailors. But also I have had loads of encouragement from the male sailors I know. I still keep my sailing as simple as possible and the mirror is an ideal beginner boat.
That was well explained, thank you. But how easy is it to de-rig the tent and get it back in it's bag? The fact that these pop up tents usually get left behind after festivals pre-empts my question!
A small quick release sheath knife on a neck lanyard or ankle strap is a valuable safety precaution whenever sleeping rough on a boat or anywhere trouble may arise unexpectedly. 👣🕊👽
Great video. Did you do one on the sleeping platform? I thought you had. Hopefully we'll see more videos of you out on the water this summer. Looking forward to that.
Good point about being trapped in case of a capsize. I think I'd keep a knife close at hand, maybe in a leg sheath like scuba divers use ... or just camp in places where the water's so shallow, capsize is impossible.
Would it not be easier and more spacious to just use a tarp set up with the boat's boom acting as the centre of the "tent". Pre-made tie out points to suit and you could really maximise the space on the dinghy. The pop up tent idea seems a little cumbersome to me. Whatever works for you though, as long as you're having fun, that's what it's all about. Cheers for a cool wee video
@@mirrormary8398 I couldn't make up my mind so now I have both Gull and Mirror. Mirror is lighter so easier for launch and recovery but I do like the Gull.
I'm a Wayfarer cruiser and watch most related material, so it was a pleasant surprise to see your vid. I thought your trip in France was good and your comments on Roger's puffing whilst rowing and falling bridge debris made me smile. How much practise did you need before you were able to complete the tent manoeuvre without it taking your head off. There should have been some out takes.
Hi Mary. I would like to do the same in my mirror. Is it a two second - 1 (the original-one person tent) ? No longer produced i think. Kind regards. Fausto DCA 2949
Thank you for an enjoyable video. I have one or two questions. I notice that when you moved the mast forward, you did not move the shrouds to the forward shroud plates. This explains the tackle arrangement on the forestay. Am I right in thinking that this tackle stays rigged permanently when you are sailing, and that the tensioning line is the one that returns to the cockpit and is secured at the vertical cleat between the open lockers just below the mast foot? Also, did you consider making bed boards to fit between the side decks rather than resting on them - lighter and smaller - and if so, what made you decide against it? I'm in the process of adapting a Mirror for cruising (with the DCA) right now, and a pop-up tent, which I have, is one of the 'accommodation' options I am looking at.
Hello Malcolm , I didn't move the shrouds forward because the forward position is just a temporary arrangement to give me a bit more sleeping space, in the morning i move it back. If i were to sail with the mast in the foreward position I also move the shrouds. The forestay is tensioned with a cleat on the foredeck. Once i pull the bed boards foreward they do just cover the well between the side decks. To get a full sleeping platform that the tent can rest on, I think they are as small as they could be. But do let me know if you have a better way, I would be interested to see it.
@@mirrormary8398 Thanks for your reply, Mary. I saw a YT vid where somebody had used an old military stretcher stretched out over the cockpit as a bed, and on the strength of that I rigged up a kind of hybrid arrangement - transverse boards laid on two long bearers running fore and aft. It works OK but it is very heavy and takes up a lot of space when stowed. It doesn't look too bad but a boat the size of a Mirror soon turns into a bit of a junkyard when loaded up with cruising gear. I'm now wondering about 2 trampoline-type fabric panels tensioned over the cockpit which can be packed away into a much smaller space - or just getting a bigger boat!
Great idea, Mary Dooly. Please show us videos of you sailing your new Rhubarbie. ( ... Out of Rogers shadow ...... 😊)
Thank you for making this video. I learned some new tricks.
Thanks Mary. I'm busy making sleeping boards for my mirror dinghy and I like your ideas.
Very helpful Vidio for us small boat sailors. You are very organised and you have a very pretty boat.😊
Great video... I miss seeing you in Roger's, so it was a pleasant surprise that I came across this. Please make more.

Spanish coast lines have also fantastic spots to hang around 😀 😊
Please make more videos ❤
This is the best of all the videos I have studied. Thanks Eamonn/ Galway bay
Thank you Mary.
Congratulations for the video Mary.
Thank you!
Hi from Japan, Mary! Very well-done video. I was pleasantly surprised that you were able to meet up with Roger in Venice. Cheers, and fair winds.
Thanks, yes it was a really fabulous trip
Would love to see you sail, the scenes and such. This is a good alternative to the canvas tarp mod tent. Great video!
i saw you demonstrate this on Roger's video. Very clever
Thanks

My Australian built Mirror only had the back Mast step! Might have to look at altering that! I was looking at a boom tent but this looks much easier to stow. Thanks for the video!
It will work even without the forward mast step. Unless you are very tall! The tent will flex to fit the space you have
And the tent will work even without the boat!! Ha ha. Up on the beach.
Happy to see you in your own video. Cordialement Yves Bouchard . Quebec Canada
Merci Yves

Now that you have a Scamp, will you be making any more videos?
Keep up sailing and make sure you record it all !thanks Mary
Justo lo que estoy por hacer. Muy bueno tu vídeo
Thanks for sharing Mary, keep the videos coming cheers Paul
thank you for your kind comment
I Love it Mary. Nice video. I've seen you sailing with Roger. It was nice to see you doing your own videos. Cheers from Brazil.
Thanks. It is amazing to have views from such exotic places like Brazil!
Great video Mary! Please keep the videos coming. I’m a subscriber now. I’ve viewed the video of your sail to Clovelly with Roger B many times.
thanks, it was very cold and a bit of a scary crossing of Bideford Bar, luckily the bar at the red lion was there to warm us up when we arrived

How would you compare a camping tent set up on the Wayfarer to the Mirror?
What a palaver, eyyyy!

when are we having more videos Mary?
thanks, I intend to do another one soon but the moment my boat is blocked in the driveway by a large bag of sand
The season is coming to a (chilly) end, so maybe more next year. Get that sand out of the way!!😀
The real tricky bit is folding up the pop-up tent and getting it back in the bag!
Hello. Do you think this could sleep two?
Hello Angus. Definitely not, it is very comfy for one, but i think would be dangerous for two in terms of stability during the night.
